Can a Piano Teach Us About God?

Observe the Piano
Observe the Piano

I am not trying to prove God! I have read papers and apologetics; treatises and testimonials; and many scattered, sacred or sometimes spectacular notes by people with intellects large enough that I fall into obscurity when I give voice to my pinhead thoughts. I have taken courses and written papers in seminary, advancing the thought or lack thereof on this query to find the existence of God.

So, I will not attempt to be another boring apologist. I will try not to do to you what has been inflicted upon me. Instead, I lay out before you a single, simple to understand, reason how I know there is a God!

By doing this I will probably not convince the die hard, "God is dead!" fanatic; nor will I overwhelm the other extreme (that extreme is an adequate description of me). However, for those who waver in doubt wanting and feeling they should believe this truth, I will give you my reason and maybe this will reassure you that it is ok to personally know there is a God. If after reading this hub and if after discovering how I know there is a God, you will just accept this seed of logical inquiry and let it germinate in your inner being, then I will accomplish my purpose.

Who Are Those Who Say - There Is No God?

There are two classes of folks who truly do not believe in the reality of God. First, those who make no open show but refuse to be guided by the compass of a moral God. These people are "closet" atheists; they do not want to be a part of an apology for or against any theology. They do not want to be counted; they just want to be left alone!

The other class bellows with gusto, "There is no God, and you can't prove One!" Well, I am not proving God. He does not need me to prove His existence. I know most of the arguments, and I might share them in another venue, but here I reserve only a personal witness as to how I know there is a God.

Read My Lips!

I will make it simple; read my lips; "I know there is a God because of one word, "CREATION!" Cre¬ation implies a Creator. A de¬sign necessitates a designer. This world did not come here by the fortuitous gathering of atoms; it was not by mishap or the simple accomplishments of chemical forces.

Consider the following made-up antidote. It is a compilation of real and pseudo experiences in my life as a pastor.

I am in the home of a friend (I will call him Jerry and I will call myself Pastor), and I am endeavoring to share faith with him.

Jerry: “Pastor, thanks for the invitation, but I am not interested. You see, I do not believe in God. I believe only in Darwin and the Big Bang Theory!”

Pastor: “Jerry, I am so glad that you bring this up. Did you know that Charles Darwin was never an atheist? It is true that he did not believe in God the way I do, but he did later in his studies believe in God as the ‘First Cause’ or the Creator or ‘first mover.’ Many call him a theist.”

“Not only this, but in his earlier life even as a non-conformist he studied Anglican theology with the hope of becoming a clergyman. After his daughter died, he lost his faith in a beneficent God and became more agnostic (unsure of God) but he never denied the existence of the God of creation! As a matter of record he continued to give support to the local church and help with parish work. The point is, Jerry, it is ok to believe!”

Jerry: “Well, I’ll just have to think about that!”

Pastor: “Jerry, You have been a very amiable host, and I never try to force faith on anyone.”

The Pastor begins heading toward the exit door and begins admiring a beautiful, hand crafted piano.

Pastor: “What is that? You tell me it is a piano. What's it for?”

Jerry: “Well, to make music, of course!"

Pastor: "Where did it come from?"

Jerry: "The piano factory."

Pastor: "How did it get there?"

Jerry with a puzzled look: "It was made there."

Pastor with a probing look: “How do you know it was made?”

Jerry now looked bewildered and wondered why such an obvious question was asked. He hesitantly responds: “Just look at it! It is obvious. Look at the beautiful handcrafted frame; observe all those perfectly pitched wires; take note of all the keys and the pedals. And, you ask me how I know it was made? – Don’t be foolish Pastor. I thought you were a man of intellect!”

Pastor smiles and chuckles: “This is no more foolish than not believing in God. Could the atoms of the universe just come together over time and spontaneously form a piano? You say, ‘No!’ I ask if a human is more complex than a piano? I look around and I see countless and again I say countless, wonders far more complex than a piano! If one had to have a maker, how can the other not?” (End of antidote)

Now this is simple; it is the “Reason For The Existence Of God For Dummies!” (This sounds like a good book title!)

Creationism Verses Darwinism

I Know There Is a God

We do not run railroad trains by chance; we may not witness the engineer, but we discern that his mind and thought are directing the movement of the train. And when I contemplate the thou¬sands of worlds rushing through space with light¬ning speed and without the loss of a second of time (as we know time) through the ages, I know there is some¬one who keeps His hand on the throttle and gov¬erns all by His marvelous law, which we call gravitation. Scientists of all specialties lean and depend on it for a great part of all their measurements and observations. This is why it is labeled a "law", and wherever there is law and order there is mind and thought back of it.

So, ladies and gentlemen consider my simple but irrefutable attack on illogic. I know some of you will not be convinced, but, then again, that is not why I write this. It is for you in the middle ground of doubt; it is for students who are under pressure from tunnel-visioned professors who are the real pinheads; it is for people of faith who do not have a clue as to how to answer the foolish intellectualism of the day. It is as logical to know what I know as to believe that life sprang from non-life; and that non-life has the gift of life in it; and that this same non-life sprang from the coalescing of atoms by chance and gravity (which the same folks cannot explain); and that this coalescing came from nothing where nothing sprang into something with a "big bang!"

Think about it! This is one reason I know there is a God. There are other reasons too. Maybe later I will lay out more of these but this start will do. Students it is all right to believe; moms and dads it is logical to believe. I taught the sciences in middle school, and when I was instructing others in elementary geology, weather and climate, I learned that science was far from static and error free. It is alright to believe! Real belief does not close your mind to the facts at hand but it embraces them. I embrace science if it is real science using real scientific methods. The more I know the more I know there is a God!

Excellent Hub. The greatest apologetic is that of a changed life. Only God can do that!

I agree. Rob thanks for visiting my hub. The reason I did not bring that out in this hub is that I wanted something that was common to all. Our universe with all its dynamic beauty and complexity. Leaves everyone without an excuse!

Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Very well.If the world was a result of fortituous gathering of atoms or accomplishments of some forces why such thing did not happen again.Apart from this there are many clues for the wise.

It is a wonderful Hub!! How can anyone see LIFE and not know there is God? What a miracle all by itself.

Thanks for visiting. What God has done for my life is all the proof I need but the outside creation miracle leaves us all without excuse!

God Bless
