How I got my hub to be on Google's first page

Before I start, I will say this – I am not selling anything. There will not be an offer to buy my ebook at the end of the hub so you can learn my “secrets of success,” for a fee. Nor will I be selling a lifetime membership to my weekly newsletter so I can turn around and sell your email address to someone. Nothing to sell. Nothing sold here :D

I will show you how I got one of my hubs on the front page of google for a particular search term. That’s it, nothing to buy.

SEO Best Practices

Some good advice from Wil Reynolds.

Why I wrote this hub

I have written this hub in reaction to two things. First, it seems this is an oft-discussed topic, not just on hubpages, but all over the internet. How do I get more exposure? How do I get more traffic? How do I earn more money from my website? You have all seen it.

Secondly, I have written it in response to the staggering number of times I am approached either in the forums here or other sites, online generally, or via email by people saying things such as………Well….., “How I got my hub to be on google’s front page,” for one and others like “I can say this my adsense income is doubling each month and my affiliate sales have so far quadrupled :-) yipee!!”

As to the last one, this did not come up in conversation, but was a poorly disguised attempt to get me to look at the person concerned’s website. I personally find these sort of promotional devices at best annoying and at worst offensive. Why offensive you may ask?

Because it makes an assumption that I am stupid and thereby insults my intelligence, that’s why. It’s unqualified, and you don’t need to be a mathematician to work out that double 10 cents is still only 20 cents. Also, this one came up during a long thread that had digressed into a personal conversation and was interrupted by someone who had just read the title of the thread and jumped in to do some self promotion.

Enough ranting Knowles, get on with it, I hear from the back. OK,OK,

How I got my hub on google’s front page:

Simple really – No keyword stuffing, no long tail keyword phrase research, no bullshit marketing or paying for links - I simply followed hubpages’ instructions on how to write a flagship hub which are:

  • A minimum of 1500 words, of your own, purely original writing
  • A minimum of 3 relevant video capsules (YouTube or Google)
  • A minimum of 5 relevant non-copyrighted images
  • At least 10 relevant, helpful links to other sources, each with your own 30-50 word description
  • A news capsule (or highly-relevant RSS feed), or eBay Capsule if your topic is product-related
  • 15 relevant tags, including 2-3 common misspellings or spelling variants (if any)
  • Maximum 150 word succinct description of the utility of your Flagship Hub in the Summary Text (uncheck the Calculate Summary Automatically box)
  • Excellent thematic and aesthetic organization - please use the Capsule Ordering setup to the right (or something similar) when laying out your Hub—trust us, it will look great when you enter all the content

Additional rules:

  • The content must not be copied from any other source, even if you have the rights to copy from that source. It must be 100% original, and not copied elsewhere after publication and payment, either.
  • You should include all links in the Links Capsule, and the links should not be to “bad neighborhoods” (sketchy sites with adult, gambling or other questionable content or ads) or to affiliate sites
  • Please break up your text into sections (using the Heading 2 text treatment for each section title) so that it is easy to read.

This is the hub in question:

And if you do a search on google for the term ”2008 motorcycle guide,” you will find not one, but two of my motorcycle guides in the first few results (currently third and fourth.)

So why does this work?

Google’s algorithm.

I am not claiming to be some sort of internet marketing guru, but I asked myself a single, simple question:

“If I was google and wanted to provide the best result possible for a search term, what would I want to see at number one?”

I would want what everyone wants when they search for something on google –

The best quality, most relevant, best written, most well-informed, information packed, good looking web page on that subject.

So, google’s search algorithm is attempting to do that. How they do it exactly is a mystery, although I have no doubt there are thousands of companies telling you they have the secret and will sell it to you for a fee. And some of them may even have it – this week – because it changes all the time. Google spend millions of man hours and dollars developing and “tweaking,” it.

So, how would I rate a web page? I am not saying this is exactly how google do it, but here are some criteria I would use to rate a web page:

  1. How many good quality links to other useful, relevant resources does the page have? Or is it full of garbage links to affiliate sales sites or porn or spam or gambling?
  2. How much content is on the page? 2000 well written words that are relevant to the page title and tags or 50 keywords and a page full of advertising?
  3. How long does a visitor stay on the page? Do they click out after 20 milliseconds or do they stay for several minutes and actually use the page? Scary as it is, google are watching everything everybody does on the internet. Just take a look at the information provided in your google analytics account. They tell you practically the name, address, age and sexual preferences of every visitor to your site; how they found you, how long they stayed and where they went afterwards – Truly Scary.
  4. Do people return to that page? Do they book mark it and check back when they need information or links on that subject or do they click off never to return?
  5. How many good quality links are coming into the page? 10 good quality organically grown links that took a month to be put in place or 2000 lousy, paid for links that have nothing to do with the subject matter? If you have got the first four criteria right, this one will come – organically.

If you read the hubpages flagship hub instructions, they are there for a reason and will allow your hub/webpage/blog to fit these criteria and you will be found by google.

Some subjects are harder to achieve. The motorcycle guide, I would class as medium difficult. There are around 200,000 results for this term, so I am happy to be there. One of my other hubs - Forex Trading Guide - is harder to achieve it with.

Basically, the more money to be made from a subject, the more people there are trying to get their site above yours, but I also believe the only difference is it will take longer to get there.

I genuinely believe there is no need for keyword stuffing, long tail keyword phrase research or any other efforts that people use to cheat the system and get their garbage to the top of the results pile. If you write genuine information in a natural way about a subject, you will automatically have the magic number of keywords and phrases about the subject. Automatically, organically and best of all – for FREE!

99% of the Internet is Garbage

It’s true, 99% of the internet is garbage. How many times have you looked for a subject and found nothing but rubbish and advertising? Pages that stop you using the back button? Pages that have pop ups? Empty pages with nothing but affiliate links?

When I began doing research for my forex hubs, I almost despaired of finding any genuine information on the subject. I eventually spoke to a banker friend of mine who told me forex trading is the biggest rip off known to man – even the banks lose money doing it. But the internet and TV is chock-a-block full of people telling you otherwise.

As a writer and internet user, I have to ask myself whether I want to add more garbage to that pile or help to reduce it. I think we all do. Do you really want to be creating spurious pages full of rubbish aimed at generating page views that end up serving no purpose whatsoever other than a few ad clicks - maybe, or do you want to produce good quality, informative pages that draw people back to your writing? On top of that, it’s MY internet too and I want to be able to use it in a way that doesn’t make me want to throw my computer out the window the next time I get a pop up advertisement selling me a penis enlargement cream.

I have made my decision – I am not saying I will write a flagship hub every time I write one, but I will certainly be bearing these instructions in mind when I do. My writing in other places bears out the fact that this works. Search google for the term, “cubicle culture,” or "youcube," and see if you can find me. And thanks for the idea coolbreeze.

Thank you Mark. I mean it, a no-nonsense, here-ye-are approach, which makes perfect sense to me.

One question though, why on earth are 3 relevant youtube (or video) links important? (maybe I missed it)

Thanks again!

Mark -

Although I am not a top hubber, nor am I ranking much with google right now... I am convinced right off that you are right-on.

I simply came here to write that which is relevant to my interest. In my little bit of alexa research, I found this site had good traffic. I figured, if I am going to write, I want what I write, to be read. It is that important of a topic to me. The potential for revenue is a big surprise.

I don't know where this will take me? What surprises me, is my scores for being a newbie? It must have to do with my 'epistles' I tend to produce. LOL I have been criticized for being long winded in my writing. Now, I see this has potential to be a positive.

From what I hear you saying -- I need to organize my Hubs. I am starting to realize this by just observation of others Hubs. Kenny, for instance like you, produce a visually pleasing Hub to the eyes of your readers. Always very fresh in appearance.

I plan on working on the technology, so that although I am lengthy, it wil be well blocked and visually engaging to my readers. I will also concentrate on my links.

Thank you. You have given us all valuable information that is very appreciated. You are a gentleman.

Hi Mark,

I like your post, it has a lot of good sound advice in it. The only thing I would say (and you did in fairness mention it yourself) is that some keyword phrases are more competitive than others. You mentioned Forex Trading Guide .

I used a tool called Wordze and its extremely useful at showing the relative competitiveness on a keyword phrase. I guess the point I'm making is that Google puts a lot of emphasis on inbound links to a document (web page). The more competitive a document, the more inbounds links it needs to get a page one ranking (generally speaking).

Anyway, good article - keep them coming!

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

I agree - that's why I think it just takes longer with the more competetive subject - eventually, you will get there. Thanks for the comment.

Some good tips there Mark. Not sure about ignoring long-tail and keyword research. Some basic research will give you an indication of how winnable your targeted keywords are and how much demand there is. Just like "forex trading guide" is a tough one. Of couse publishing to an "authority" site like Hubpages is a great tactic to start with. Like your tips about including videos and pics and will try that with my hubs.

Best regards

What do you think about hubs page rank ? It seems to me its very hard to build it as you would on a regular blog.

Mark Knowles profile image

Each page seems to stand alone. Having said that, the hubpages software does a pretty good job of getting the pages found and ranked quickly, so there is some carry over authority to each page, both from your personal profile page and hubpages as a site.

But it seems to me, page rank is no longer the same value as it used to be.

Thanks you Mark,

When most of us start out on a project like this we find that there is so much material to go through it can easily become overwhelming. You've managed to cut to the chase and put it all in a context that doesn't require hours and hours of reading and researchjust to figure out. Which saves that time for doing the research and writing we're here to do.

Thanks again,

Wow! What a Hub! You've inspired about a gazillion comments in just a couple weeks. Do you feel the love?

I've yet to follow HubPages flagship hub instructions, and as a result, I haven't reached #1 or #2 on any of my hubs, either.

My problem is that if I tried to put up 1500 words, it would be nonsensical rambling. My writing is better when done short, and to the point. Then I link them together to create the broader discussion.

I guess I should go back to work and spend a couple weeks writing up the mother of all hub pages and see what happens.

Mark, in so many words you described the difference between 2 kinds of people

1 Those who have something good to offer viewers and those that don't.

2 Those who are willing to put forth effort to promote and share their product/service and those who want positive effects with little effort.

The ability to write a flagship hub will sift out both of these groups. After all, Who can BS for 2000 words about a worthless product/service? I mean you could I guess, but I don't think too many people would be fooled. by it

If you do have something really great to offer, you should just focus and take the time to do it. Yes, I'm included in that little sermon....:)

Thanks Mark

All good stuff. Personally, I can't stand u-tube and rarely if ever click on a movie link. I don't doubt that they help your SEO and all that, but in my experience, if 99% of the text/pic internet is garbage, that rises to 99.99% of internet videos. That's why I was disappointed in the Flagship Hub initiative. It seems to militate against quality writing. Pity ;)

Mark Knowles profile image

I have to agree. I rarely put YouTube videos in my normal hubs because it is so hard to find decent stuff. But, as HP says, it does keep the viewer on the page longer, and I go out of my way to find relevant good quality videos.

YouTube isn't the #3 rated site on the entire internet for nothing, you know. For every person who refuses to watch a YouTube video because they think it is a senseless waste of time, There are a thousand more who spend hours upon hours, every day, doing little but sitting and watching YouTube videos.

I advocate thoroughly searching YouTube for good videos that are on topic and put them on your site. If you can't find one that fits, make one.

Ouch, those are some hefty minimum requirements Mark, does that mean my own hub (just created my first one yesterday) or anyone else's who don't meet these minimums can't rank well?

As a rookie to Hub Pages I'm certainly grateful for your throwing this information out there for everyone to learn from and I hope to do better as I go along.

I noticed that this very hub you created to tell us of your HUB strategy doesn't seem to meet all the minimum requirements you mentioned such as the min. 3 video requirement and some others. Is there a reason you held back on this particular Hub page?

Thanks again,

Stephen

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

LOL - Yes. These are not minimum requirements - they are just how I got this hub where it is.

My personal preference is against YouTube videos - I think the quality is poor and there is too much opportunity for the hosting service to put advertisements in that are not going to do me any good - you heard it here first - they don't do it yet - but they will do. BUT - they keep the reader on the page longer - a trade-off.

There are other things to consider also. This format for the m/c guide is not a great earner because there are too many other links for the reader to click on.

I will not be doing a "flagship hub" withe every hub I write either, but I keep these guidelines in the back of my mind.

Mark Knowles profile image

I don't know - I guess it depends on the suggestions you have - Hubpages are looking for high traffic/high paying subjects but they also look for good work. One of my hubs:

I did this and sent it to them and they liked it, so they paid me for a flagship hub - and this is not high paying subject :) Like I said - it depends. Why don't you email them and ask? It certainly can't hurt :)

hi allow me to do a little bit analysis (& of course may others too find it helpful)

1) everyone is selling something, but we should have moral principles not to fool someone into making us a sale. (i don't think so there is any harm in honest selling, afterall you too have adsense, so honesty is best policy).

2) link to authority websites: i think by linking to hubpages rules, you have generated confidence in everyone.

3) i found it weird that you don't have bio pages, contact you link, & all other stuffs found on right side.

THIS IS INTELLIGENT, there's this "related hubs" things, now this won't distract people. Really intelligent. will follow.

4) Writing style: i don't know it helps people or not, but i've natural analytic mindset (i've done it here again), but your writing style is certainly such which everyone would identify with. i'll certainly improve here. your PRO.

5) so far as i know about SEO'S i would agree with you only in few points.

Also, I wonder how we can find out which search words will bring in traffic. I have a movie review blog, and if I google "thoughtless movie" I come out number one--yay! But who would ever think to look up "thoughtless" anything?

Overall, thanks for the article, some well-thought tips.

This is very believable just like I said in my earlier comments on other Hubs. I have found more than a couple of what I have been searching on for years here at HubPages. The posts here make more sense than the searches I have made. Most of the elements and basics were clearly defined here. No need to use traffic sites which I am still using now. It's true, the topic, reliable keywords and links, including most relevant photos and videos will get the readership and traffic. I wish I could achieve something like this!

Hey Mark, I would say based on the number of comments that this is a popular hub! Seems like more than a few people are interested in getting on Google's first page. I think your summary of what it takes is dead on, though you might start the hub with a disclaimer "If you aren't willing to work hard, don't bother reading this." I've bookmarked this hub to come back to and read again. I had to stop half way through the comments as there is only so much I can digest at a time. By the way, I checked your google rankings (just to make sure it wasn't a fluke or a temporary thing, and you're still there - though it looks like you dropped from 3 to 4 :), but you've still got two spots. Incredible! I feel the power of the hub!

Mark, you said

"I genuinely believe there is no need for keyword stuffing, long tail keyword phrase research or any other efforts that people use to cheat the system and get their garbage to the top of the results pile."

I disagree about the keyword phrase research aspect, and believe that this should be a part of hub and article planning.

Granted, some might use this to cheat the system. But it can also be used for good purposes.

Just like a knife can be used to kill someone - or to save a life.

Here's a couple of things you may want to consider in relation to your motorcycling hub.

Your keyword phrase "2008 Motorcycle guide" would appear to get less than 30 searches per month in Google, and adwords cost is 5 cents.

The keyphrases "motorcycle buyers guide" and "motorcycle buying guide" each receive over 600 google searches per month, and the adwords cost (and therefore Adsense payouts) are around 10 times higher.

You could consider trying a hub that uses these terms, and comparing the results.

I don't intend to get bogged down in this too much, but I believe that you could significantly improve your adsense income by paying some attention to keyword phrases, and tailoring the hub titles, names, and content to keyphrases that provide the best results.

Sometimes the results are very subtle. Here are the number of monthly google searches for three similar terms:

business web site - 58,710

business website - 49,260

business websites - 13,920

(Note - these are competitive terms, and it would be very hard to get to the top of google for any of them - but the same principles apply to any search term)

It's not cheating the system to find out the terms for which people are searching, eveluating the amount of competition, and then providing quality hubs or articles to match them.

And by the way - to find an accurate figure of competing sites for a search term, put the search term in quotes. To use your example:

2008 motorcycle guide - a search without the quotes returns about 250,000 pages. This means the number of sites that have the words 2008, motorcycle, and guide somewhere on a page.

It is NOT the number of sites where those 3 words appear together in that order. To find this, you need to search for "2008 motorcycle guide" - in quotes. This search tells you that there are 391 pages where that exact phrase appears. And this is the number of sites you are competing against.

Cheers,

Eric G.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

Eric -

Thanks for stopping by. I know the difference between the 2 types of searches :D

But, I will also quote myself:

"I will show you how I got one of my hubs on the front page of google for a particular search term. That’s it, nothing to buy."

Now, that is not the full story, because I also get traffic to my 2008 motorcycle guide for a wide range of other search terms, most of which are also returned as a front page result, including:

best motorcycle of 2008

best motorcycles 2008

2008 motorcycles

motorbikes 2008

2008 motorcycle

Which adds up to what I consider to be reasonable traffic to that hub.

There are other reasons to write hubs other than adsense income. It is fair to say I could probably optimise that page more for adsense, but I also wanted to generate a reputation as an authority on the subject and I wrote a number of other m/c hubs at the same time which are more optimised than this one.

Partly thanks to the authority this one gets, my 2008 gsxr 1000 hub is also a front page result for the term. 2008 gsxr 1000 - Which is a more highly searched for term :D

If you take a look at my hubs you will see about 10 around this subject.

The smaller ones are much more optimised. They have less text, a lot fewer outward links and also generate traffic around similar search terms.

I don't know what would be considered a lot of traffic to this subject as this is the first time I have written about motorcycles, but between them they get around 13,000 hits a month.

I am certainly not saying your advice will not work, but there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Thanks for the input.

Eric Graudins profile image

Eric Graudins  says:

You're welcome.

Yes, there's heaps of ways to skin a cat, and even more ways to approach setting up a web page.

Most of the links are also commercial, can I add those?

In Mark's defense, Eric Graudins wrote that keyword research helps to find the "high volume" search phrases, but he failed to point out that just because it's higher volume, that doesn't mean it's better, and that's for several reasons:

1) Sure, Mark could have written an article optimized for "motorcycle buying guide", but that is probably 100 times more competitive, and a #1 spot on google (nearly instantly) for a long-tail phrase probably gets more traffic than a #25 or #30 spot for a highly competitive phrase. It might take a lot longer to make it to the first page (let alone #1) and until he gets there, it won't get him much exposure at all.

2) Just because it gets more traffic, that doesn't mean it's best to rank for that phrase. For example: "Colorado" gets about 1000 times as much traffic as "Colorado real estate". If I sell Colorado homes, that doesn't mean I should try to optimize for that phrase, because only about 3% of that traffic is looking for what I sell. Even though 3% of the traffic of "Colorado" phrase would be FANTASTIC, it would take PHENOMENAL effort to make it to the first page. Even though it's less traffic, it's TARGETED traffic. I'd be better off getting to the first page with a tiny fraction of the effort for "Colorado real estate", "Boulder real estate" , "Boulder CO real estate", and any other cities I serve.

The same goes for Mark's case. If he were in motorcycle sales, and sold every type of motorcycle under the sun, maybe it would be worth fighting his way to the top for the more competitive phrase. However, if he just sells new motorcycles, 90% of his traffic wouldn't be worth his while. Instead, he'd just laugh his way to the bank selling 2008 motorcycles, while everyone else is fighting over the other traffic. Then, on January 1, 2009, he could wash, rinse & repeat, and get all that traffic everyone else is ignoring -- probably as early as January 2nd ;-)

I said it earlier Mark, and I'll say it again -- Thumbs up! I'm a fan.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

Thanks Joel. Glad you enjoyed it. I agree with you. I have also taken Eric's advice and done a small amount of editing and added the tags "motorcycle buying guide" and "motorcycle buyers guide"

I have yet to see any traffic from those terms although I am now on the third page of results for both those terms.

So, at the moment, at least for this one, the first page of results for a less competitive term is performing much better than the 3rd page for a more competitive one.

We shall see :)

Eric Graudins profile image

Eric Graudins  says:

@ Joel:

You're right about high volume not being necessarily better. I was just addressing Mark's apparent disdain for any kind of keyword research.

And yes, when you take into account the competion for a phrase, (ie exact matches, allinurl, allinanchor, allintitle) you would be far better off going for a phrase with one quarter of the number of searches, and one percent of the competition.

But you have to take a softly, softly approach with Mr. Knowles or he's likely to bite :-). Or send his army of people after you.

And Mark - I'd be interested to know how the keyword results go over time.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

Eric - So will I :)

I do listen to people who know more about these things than I do. What I did was added two tags, mc buyers guide and mc buying guide, and added that text in the hub in 2 places each. I have also left some links around using that anchor text. As of now, I am on the 3rd page of google's results for both those terms and am not yet getting any traffic.

I will keep you posted. And thanks for the advice again :)

Eric Graudins profile image

Eric Graudins  says:

Well that's hardly optimizing the page for those terms.

If you want to do an experiment, send me the topic of a future hub and I'll do a bit of keyword stuff for you. You can then optimise for these, and see how it goes.

"keyword phrase research or any other efforts that people use to cheat the system and get their garbage to the top of the results pile."

You know where I find the absolute MOST garbage?  In the Paid for / pay-per-click results.  It drives me BONKERS!  Sometimes there are SO many of them, you actually have to go on to page TWO of results just to get to the WEB results (and the line/text to where it begins is in really tiny print! - I really detest this about Google - seems every single day they are out to just make more $$ (like they need it) and produce less and less true useful content based results on the search term.

I am beginning to not like google at all and I use many other SE now - like ask.com - finding SE that DO NOT use google results is not so easy anymore though either!!

Thanks for the article - I am suprised at all that is required to be considered a *greatly written hub* - seems quite over blown to me - too many videos - too many pictures.  A LOT of text when most of the time 1500 words would just be *filler*.

Thanks again - Melanie

Hi Mark,

You are certainly a famous face around these parts -- I see you often on discussion threads, as well as often in other people's fan lists -- maybe your distinguished older gentleman photo also helps out your popularity at Hubpages :-).

I, too, have been on Page One on Google for a number of keyword combinations with this hub:

and I have been at Number One on Google for ages with this one:

Thanks for this excellent hub, it is a breath of fresh air! With all the pop ups and junk on the internet, I was getting more and more depressed and confused as to how to make some online money. I tired to do surverys, but they are so mind numbing, I could not take it, the same goes for online sweepstakes, it is just ridiculous! I would much rather write quality hubs, get them on googles first page and then see what happens. I am going to read your other hubs, finally I got some straight answers that I can understand. I completely overlooked the flagship page! It is the nature of the internet itself, it is hard to settle on just one website, there are always more to explore, however, the Hubpages has given me more information that I can really use, and it is FREE! Thank you so much again!

Thanks for the info...

But all that is really necessary? I mean I posted an hub just 3 days ago and its already on the first page of ggogle.

Its http://hubpages.com/hub/Anime-Online---Watch-Golde

just try search for watch golden boy OR golden boy online and you'll see what I mean.

Now, after that I made a simmilar one concerning Serial Experiments Lain another anime I like. It's http://hubpages.com/hub/Anime-online---Watch-Seria

and it's nowhere near the fisrt page.

I must give it time to mature, but I think the main reason is that for Golden Boy there was not a lot of things written online, because its not such a well known anime, while Lain, well... it's Lain!

So I think one of your major key points is finding a niche and writing about something unnusual, but interesting to some people. You'll get to google first page then :D

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

THanks for commenting all.

Anime - only use it if it is of interest. It seems you already know everything there is to know. lol

Now go search again for golden boy online and you will see you are no longer there :)

still am there :D 6th position :D

coincidentally my Serial Experiment is nº1 on google when you put Lain Online.

It matured I guess ^_^'

But you're right I still need to learn a lot about all this things. I'm just a nurse anyway :D

I tried doing a hub with similar instructions like you describe here... photos, videos and I really put some research into it... But the other ones i did before are getting better... Since its about the history of anime, maybe its a broader scope and it doesnt work like that, i dont know :(

I tried promoting it in some sites, but lets just say my social network is low o_o

I would say Google will really love our page and it may view the page as "very informative" if we are able to apply every points that you mentioned here. Pages being positioned in the first page of SERP would be good enough.

Thanks much for the insights. One of the key items that stuck out was a topic that seems to come up time and time again and that's the matter of keywords [ie. keyword stuffing and long-tail keywords] and other not so optimal marketing techniques. It is very easy to get caught up in all the hype of these methodologies but more often than not they are overhyped, time-consuming and Google of course will inevitably identify methods intended to override the algorithms. People like Perry Marshall and yourself included help to remind us that the tried and true methods are usually the best.

Mr. Rheaman  says:

I am listed No. 1 on Google also.  I know that because I just published a new site, and I used a three-word search term to see if the search engines are ranking my site yet.

The search term that I used is a prominent phrase on my site, and all three of the words are used all the time by other related sites.  Two of the words are very very commonly used in the page titles or domain names of related sites.

Yes, Google shows that I am No. 1 on that term.  No. Google is not sending much traffic to me.

The problem is that I only rank No. 1 if people search for those exact terms in the exact order and with the exact spelling.  Any variation will kill my No. 1.

When I rank reasonably well for two-word search terms, then I will be getting business.

If I get to the point where I rank high on one-word search terms, then I will buy an island and relax.

By the way, using misspellings is a good way to rank high for misspelled search terms, but it will not help your ranking on correctly spelled words. This article has some good info about Domain Names and misspellings: Choosing a Domain Name for your Site or Blog

Great Hub, Mark. You have provided so much value. I am impressed and didn't charge anything for the information. This is what I call a unique and valuable contribution to helping the community of hubbers here on hubpages. You have contributed your value that enhanced everyone's need with the proper recognition of creating great solutions to marketing online. I have learned some valuable information, just by reading this hub. Pay Per Click, just as said google loves this which keeps the SEO a billion dollar industry. Enough could go around with the everyone wanting exposure through advertisement one's business.

Good hub, congratulations on your #1 placement ranking on google.

Hmm... As for that Garbage on the Net I just have a question:WHY do you think there Still IS so much 'garbage' on the Net...?Ever since I first logon Online in 1996 this was an issue. Today is 2009 and the 'garbage/spam' etc is STILL not only here, but it is Growing. How come? My Personal Answer: Because it Works! Because all the 'garbage' are products which people (and Mostly YOU = North Americans) ARE Buying!IF it wasn't profitable it wouldn't last past the year 2000! - yet it is still here.

So the Solution to the "99% Internet Garbage" is simple: STOP Buying Garbage!

Thanks for this. I am new to this game.

I do not know what some of the info. means, like the sentence below.

A news capsule (or highly-relevant RSS feed), or eBay Capsule if your topic is product-related

 and

I thought we were only allowed two links going out?

At least 10 relevant, helpful links to other sources, each with your own 30-50 word description

I liked your info. and the video and your attitude

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

A news capsule or RSS feed capsule is one of the options you have when adding capsules while building a hub. They are updated from RSS feeds :)

You can have as many links as you like, but if you add more than 2 promotional links to a site you are promoting it will be considered overly-promotional.

I must say that this article is the first realistic advice that I've read in a long time about getting a page to rank high in Google. Your advice is down to earth, common sense. Which is what I think a lot of the stuff I've read has lacked!

As a relative newcomer to HubPages, I have a lot to learn. I'm going to follow your advice -- more to help me create a good article about topics that I am interested in than in trying to rank high or to make money. I don't want to add garbage -- I want to add value to the lives of people who read what I write.

Mark.

Earlier today I read your Hub, "How I Got My Hub To Be On Google's First Page". All I can Say is God Bless you buddy! In one article you answered questions I've been trying to find the answers to for months. I'm one of those lucky adults blessed with ADHD which means I get easily confused and overwhelmed. All of this IM stuff just seems more than I can comprehend at times. But your article was so well written it made perfect sense to me.

First of all I loved the way you started it. I am so sick of all the emails and webpages pitching the salvation of the Internet and all the gurus with the magic answers to getting rich overnight I just wanna throw up. My wife and I are all about helping other people. The only reason we want to get rich is so we can help others have a decent life.

I started out on Squidoo but never got any traffic. Maybe 10 hits in 6 months. I came here and have gotten lots of traffic even though I know my hubs need improvement. Now, after reading your motorcycle hub, I know what to do. This is what I did. First, using your MC hub I cut and pasted the content, pictures, videos and links into a document. This is going to be my hub template. Later I'm going back over my hubs and compare them to it and modify as needed.

That's what ADHDers need, templates, guides. I then went to your HP profile page and read up on you and when I saw you were a major blogger, I copied the links to all your blogs and pasted them in the same document. My wife, Diane and I are getting ready to get back into blogging. I published a hub a couple of days ago called "Climb Every Mountain - A Tribute To Large Breasted Women". The next morning I had 10 comments on it. I told Diane and she said "We gotta do a blog". I researched blogs about big breasts and 99% of them were porno sites as you can imagine. So I think we're onto something. I'm going to check out your blogs and try and get some tips. Hope you don't mind.

I have about 12 Hub Pages up now, mostly music related. I'm a singer/songwriter and musician. I spent 12 years in Nashville and got the opportunity to do it in the big time for awhie. I'm very proud of that and now I'm trying to help others by sharing my experiences, especially those who have dreams of doing the Nashville thing. I put up a hub called "Songwriting - Nashville Style" That I think is going to do well. I also have a guitar lesson series called "Guitar Lessons That Don't Suck" and a few other things. I write under 3 different usernames, Joe Russ, nvsongwriter and obxscribe. The obx stands for Outer Banks (NC) where we live presently.

Thank you again for your wonderful articles. They are very helpful.

Hi Mark. The blend of useful information and a sincere voice in your hub is a real find. I particularly like your mention of avoiding questionable tactics (such as keyword stuffing) and providing useful and original stuff you yourself would like to find when you search for them. The way Google's algorithm works, as you've explained it, seems to reward honest people with something useful to say. I imagine it's a relief for some people to read your article, as they don't have to spend much in promoting their sites/hubs; they only need to sincerely want to provide something useful, and with all that packaged along with some reminders (break your text into sections, so that it's easier to read, and so on) that anyone can follow. Good job.

Some of your advice is a little deceptive. You say that there are 200,000 results but actually if you do an allinanchor search exact targeting your keyword there is only 5 results.

allinanchor: "2008 motorcycle guide"

So that's really your competition. And of those five, 1 is the hub, 1 is a Scribd page of your hub, and another is a blog post you wrote about the hub. So no wonder it ranks, it's a fairly longtail keyword with very little competition. You should also mention that you submitted it to Stumbleupon.

Most of the time if you write a good hub targeting longtail keywords and throw a few links at it, it will rank on the first page.

Still, a great hub.

Mark Knowles profile image

Mark Knowles  says:

Jason,

That is wrong. Even with a very selective search like that there is:

about 7,150 for allinanchor:2008 motorcycle guide

http://www.google.com/search?q=allinanchor%3A2008+

Without using quotation marks. Plus - who makes a search like that? There are actually 309,000 results using a normal search

Plus - I did not submit it to stumbleupon.

I made no claims about this being a difficult search term. I just told the truth about how I got this hub on the front page of google for dozens of search terms that have translated into thousands of visitors. And I wouldn't call this particularly long tail........

Excellent hub - so refreshing to find a hub that is not simply a thinly-disguised (or even blatant) attempt to sell something. The amount of garbage on the internet can be very frustrating.

The problem is that so much of so-called seo best practice just makes the problem worse. Spinning of articles and submitting to 500 article directories. Where is the sense in that? My own gripe is directory submission - I just cannot believe that Google places any weight whatsoever on a directory listing (I had a rant in one of my hubs: http://hubpages.com/hub/Directory-Submission-Softw - note the sneaky title - playing them at their own game!)

What is very interesting is that this article is on the first page of Google for a "first page of Google" query and yet you have hardly keyword stuffed it!

Great work - and many thanks. Have linked to you from my blog.

The key word thing is down-right confusing to me, is it something that I'm supposed to "activate" through another site, or are my tags the key words...oy, I like the way you said to do it, then I don't have to worry about the key words. Also, that score thing is unnerving...I find myself checking it, but does it mean anything really? How is it determined. Is it strictly based on traffic or on quality of content? Any other advice?

I had this bookmarked for a while now, but just until now i'm starting to review my own hubs with these rules, i just have a small question, with 1500 words surely hubpages will sugest a lot more then 15 keywords, is there any disadvantage in having a lot more than that or is the more the merrier ?

wow, this is just what i needed. i've just discovered hubpages and have only in the past month or so become interested in web 2.0. I signed up for a few affiliates and felt dizzy with the directions I could take. But I think your paragraph about not adding more BS to the internet is a very agreeable opinion.

Thanks!

As I am still a beginner, I seem to be stumbling around with my hubs. Since i found this hub last night, I've been overhauling all of them. I literally keep your hub open in one window so I can go down that checklist and be sure all of mine fit the minimum requirements. On the ones I've finished, I have improved the hub's score and received more traffic already. It has not even been 12 hours since I started! Thank you so much for this.

This hub is so true. It only makes sense to make your hub the page you would look for when you are attempting to Google something.

Hi Mark... Sure do like your Hubs. After I read them, I save them so that I can read them again. I have been here at Hubpages for about a month. Most of the stuff I write here is to help me organize it for use elsewhere, but there is much fun in making new friends here and the like. I also look at Hubpages as a place to experiment. One experiment was to find out if I could quickly get my hubs to place on the first page of Google and other search engines. My keywords were "Dumb Poem" and "Redneck Recipe." The Hubs have typically placed between #3 and #8, and there is plenty of competition for both. I think that Hubpages traffic has a lot to do with it, but it was (and is still) a fun experiment. :-)

Mark, your so professional, after reading several of your Hubs, I see that I started out better than I am becoming, being influenced by Hub ratings higher than my own, but your content is the key to where I want to go with my writing, your content of your Hubs has the components of quality resource material for people on the search, or doing the research...I aspire to reach the goals you have laid out. Thank, this is two months into my efforts, but at least I have finally found you!

I am in the process of gathering info on making money online through hubPages and other sites. I am by nature skeptical of all these get rich scams out there. If forex trading is such a good money making, all these phony adverts will not be in public domain. Learning fast.

Fantastic information! Well explained. It doesn´t take any fancy stuff get on the first page of Google, all you need to do is write useful and helpful information and use the specs Mark mentioned above. However, it will help if you do some keyword research first to find keywords people actually use.

This hub is useful for all bloggers too. Many bloggers still do not write long blog post, and hardly anyone writes 1,500 words blog posts. That's why many blogs do not have enough traffic from search engines.

Knowles, thanks for this hub. Really helpful and keeps my eye on the right ball. It's not the money we should be after, but providing good quality content for the largest community on the planet, the internet community. If we see a need (by doing good keyword research) and we fill that need with useful content that benefits people and give people what they are looking for, the money should come as a nice after-thought. There are so many scammers out there and I'm grateful for guys like you online. It's refreshing too because I don't think there's one person who wants to write content for a living that hasn't had the temptation to become a scammer himself. Thanks again!

A sudden spike in google traffic recently led me to investigate and guess what - one of my hubs made the first page too! No keyword stuffing or even particularly targeted SEO writing, but interestingly enough I just checked your advice and my hub fitted with everything you suggested. Must be I'm finally getting the hang of this online writing (about time too)!

This is a far better one than your hub on blogging. The 2008 Motorcycle hub is also good quality but the blogging one is rated just a point below them.

Putting the same search phrase as the name of your webpage is not a good test. What other search phrases bring your page to the top?

My comment is that the blogging hub didn't have the information that you mentioned in this hub, but received the same marks.

just doing research...
