Long Braids, Dreads or Twist

If you do not want your hair to lock while it is naturally shedding. It should not stay in more than a month, month and a half. After this time it will become more difficult to remove because of the shedding taking place.

Remember your hair loses approximately 75 strands of hair a day, and that's with normal combing. Imagine what happens in more time. Especially if the hair is dry and causes breakage from neglect.

Understanding African American Hair

African American hair is very delicate and will break very, very easily if mistreated. This is because of our hair bonds.are spiral and weaken when straighten. Not to mention the fact that we don't produce the amount of natural oils other nationalities produce. Causing daily shampooing to further dry out our hair.

Are hair is strongest when left in it's natural state being that our bonds are spiral. Straight hair is weaker when it is curled because that is not how the bond is shaped. This is why proper conditioning and care is crucial.

That is why many do not achieve a long length and always have new growth. The hair strands growth cycle life not become longer until the proper level of moisture is maintained in the hair.

This is why in the seventies the greasy geri curls causes African Americans to have hair down their back all over the nation!

Hair Maintenance

Shampooing your braids,dreads, or twist:

  • Mix seabreeze into your shampoo and gently shampoo twice or three times. Let second shampoo stay in for 3 to 5 minutes to refresh and kill bacteria. This will feel great! Now follow direction 2 and 3.
  • Wrap hair in large towel to absorb excess water. Even the men can do this!

Shampoo Free When hair can not be disturbed due to illness or delicate nature of the hairstyle.

  1. I suggest wiping sea breeze on the scalp once a week (can be used daily if you work out) to keep it clean and refreshed while keeping hair in place.
  2. Spray a moisturizing leave in conditioner and oil in your hair to keep it moist and strong. There are so many to choose from. You must prevent you hair from becoming dried out. Dry hair breaks.
  3. Use non-greasy shine designed for wigs and natural hair if using extensions

Sleeping With Long Hair

  1. In a bind you can use a small tee shirt with a small neck to protect your hair.
  2. Just pull it over your head. Flip it back over your twist or braids. Depending how long my hair is at the time .
  3. I suggest a rubber band on the end of the tee to keep the hair in. This prevents lint from getting in the hair.and protects the hair from being rubbed and unruly.

I hope this has been informative to you. You can look at this natural twist video for more hair options and education. Also read my other blog about "Dry Hair Care".

Gel with alcohol in them are drying to the hairĀ  and scalp. They dry faster than other gel and can be use for dramatic styles, I suggest a week at the most. 2 weeks tops.

Protein gels cause the hair to become to hard and break. People forget protein is a treatment and can not be overused.

If these are your gels of choice they must be balanced by using a moisturing conditioner or your hair will start looking like straw.

Prepare your hair for lengthy gel use by adding leave-in hair conditioning for protection.

Here are a few choices, there are so many.

thank u for the response... i use the little cheap 1.99 blue gel (white ppl gel). It doesnt make my hair hard. I use a small amount for when i pull my hair into a pony tail. I want my sons hair to grow thicker and stronger. I use "just for me" moisturizor with honey milk and the shampoo and conditioner on my self. You think thats okay to use on a two year old. Since us african americans cant wash our hair every day... is that the same for african american toddlers?? What time frame for children since they alwys getting dirty.

Just for me is a very good product. An yes shampoo baby boys hair when he takes his bath. You are still replacing oils and moisturizers with that product.

Instant conditioners remove cuticle layers in minutes so don't leave on long or it can cause dryness by dissolving natural moisture after getting through the cuticle layer on the hair.

This is why some hair feels like it needs so much oil, because it probably has been stripped by instant conditioners. :) Kiss Baby Boy!

Since I went natural, I am amazed at how strong my hair is. Much less breakage, and I have been wearing two strand twists at night while I sleep and I usually have my hair in braids on days that I am just relaxing around the house, it really is a protective style that spares my ends from getting to tangled.

This is important for three strand braids also. The longer you leave your braids in, the harder it is to take them out because of the natural shedding that takes place.

Hair should also be shampood and moisturized to eliminate unnecessary breakage from dryness.

Good tip R.A.!

I've been trying to grow my hair for the past 10 years, i always have new growths but yet my hair is short so i took a hair cut to see if it would grow faster. Presently i have it in braids for the past 7 weeks and it seems to be growing, how long do you think i should leave the braids in my hair? "It looks good though"

Thanks for stopping by! Now most importantly...are you moisturizing your hair while it is braided. Remember dry hair breaks.

If you have a chemical in your hair, it will break faster if your not putting nourishing oils on scalp and spraying leave in conditioners, moisturizers, or leave in treatments on hair that is in the braids, especially the end.

Your hair will alway grow, most african american hair grows slower. However it will break fast if hair is neglected.

If hair is not being maintained it is time for them to come out.

If the hair is locking at the base (roots). It is time to come out.

Box braids, twist or small individual braids should come out if the begin to twist at the roots causing it to lock depending on hair growth or looseness of the braids.

Braids can last anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 mths with proper maintenance. Some leave them in longer, this doesn't make it right.

Some hair has dandruff or is to soft to stay in hair too long, Or the person works out regularly and too much shampooing made the hair look unkept.

I hope this helps.

Hair can twist and lock at roots or hang to far away from the scalp causing breakage.
