How Painful Are Tattoos

Dealing With It!

Ever since I was 18 I thought about how great it would be to get a tattoo. It took me 3 years to actually go through with getting one. When it comes to the hard decision of whether or not to get one what is the one thing that holds most of us back?

For me it was knowing how painful it was going to be. After getting a tongue ring at 18 (which was removed a week later) I probably should have been able to deal with the pain the comes with a tattoo - but it just kept bugging me.

While trying to decide I would ask around to see if there were ways to minimize the pain from tattoos. Everyone told me that getting a tattoo will hurt differently for people. For some their pain threshold is so high that they are able to pierce any part of their body. Others have a low pain threshold that causes them too faint even with a simple ear piercing.

This applies to tattoos. The pain from a tattoo is due to the fact that many tiny needles are piercing your skin deep enough and very fast to drop the ink into your skin. It also depends on where you choose to place it, what colors you choose for it, and just how much you are psyching yourself out. If you are dreading for the worst than that is just what you are going to get.

One of the most painful places that you can place the tattoo is on the wrist, back, and anywhere else where the bone is not covered by much fat. You may decide to keep your tattoo black and white meaning that the process will be shorter and easier to withstand.

From personal experience I can tell you that it hurt quite a bit for me. Of course I was psyching myself out and was about to pass out before he even started. I chose a small and very simple design so that it would be quick and placed it on my wrist. I was warned that this part of my body would make it more painful than childbirth (childbirth was easier than this) but it was the perfect spot for this and allowed me to show it off to people. It hurt - but the pain was gone in less than an hour and it healed quickly.

Imagine it like this. You will endure a few minutes (depending on the size of the tattoo) of pain and years of enjoyment.

For me, it didn't really hurt all that much. It stung some at first, but by the time he had been doing it for 15 minutes, I had mostly blocked it out.

You are right about the back and areas with little meat on them. My friend, who is a bean pole, got one on his ribs and he said it was really painful.

My first tattoo is a sunflower on my ankle, it barely hurt, in fact i was bent in a postion so that I got the best show and was just in awe watching the artist do it. My second tattoo is a bracelet tattoo on my left wrist. The underside was crazy painful felt like burning and stinging through my whole body. It was a crazy feeling but at the same time, I found myself thinking that it would be the only time I'd ever experience a feeling like that without being in any danger. So ya, I liked the pain =P

I want a 3rd tattoo, a softer looking scorpion (is that possible ;) but got laid off so have to wait a bit longer.

mine is on the underside of my wrist as well. I couldn't watch him do it because I knew it would make the pain worse for me. I don't think I'll get anymore though.
