The Procrastination Problem
So do you procrastinate? - Honestly, I do. This is actually the reason why I am so familiar with this word - Procrastination. At such an early age I learned its meaning. If you don't know what it is then good for you - you probably don't have it, or, you are unaware you have it.
Procrastination means "the act or habit of.. putting off to a future time; delay; dilatoriness" (Answers.com). It is the "avoidance of doing a task which needs to be accomplished. This can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, depression and self-doubt.." ("Procrastination"--University of Buffalo, NY Counseling Services) Well, I used to never know how serious it could be.
A recent study in Washington also revealed that procrastination is not only a personal dilemma. It has spread throughout society. From 5%, now 25% of Americans consider themselves to be procrastinators. That's a hard hit because of delayed office work, student responsibilities, and tax payments - very costly. I'm kind of feeling guilty now. Well least I also now think I should stop playing online games while writing-On the other hand, Temptation.
"Temptation is the biggest factor. And it's why procrastination is getting worse," says the study's proponent Steel. "Too many tempting diversions are to blame..." "... so many fun ways to kill time - TVs in every room, online video, Web-surfing, cell phones, video games, iPods and Blackberries." He also pointed that burning Christmas shopping using credit cards incessantly have increased. Ahem. With all these are you feeling guilty with me now?
Yet stopping from procrastinating is not that easy. You could think no more procrastination for you once you're off of these hot technologies, but procrastination is caused by more serious problems hence, needing more attention and added discipline. "The causes of procrastination combine temptation, sense of immediacy, the value of doing the job, and whether you believe you can get the work done." Steele also corrects against the misconception that procrastinators are such because they are perfectionists. - This could only mean that procrastination could not and should not be justified by ‘perfectionism.' There is also a more serious type of procrastination, one which is caused by: "anxiety, panic - they can be defined as a special case of procrastination." If you're not getting much things done, that could mean you already have this problem. It's sort of like a barge in a person's functioning. What's more is that "It makes people poorer, fatter and unhappier."
Procrastination is that serious. So no more slacking, excuses or whatsoever, before you get worse.
