Car Acceleration and Conservation of Fuel

Oil, which supplies the bulk of the world energy needs, is not only rapidly being depleted but is also becoming expensive. We need oil to run industries and factories, to produce lighting and power, and to fuel our vehicles. We should realize that there is a need to conserve fuel.

When drive a car, the power produced by the engine is transmitted to the rear wheels by means of gears. Starting from rest, a car speeds up by shifting into first gear, then into second gear, and then into third gear, and so on. A car that travels in low gears covers a short distance for every litre of fuel. A car can travel the longest distance for every litre of fuel in the highest gear. However, at high speeds, friction increases so a car uses more fuel to evercome it. Hence, to conserve fuel, it is advisable that you drive at a low speed using the highest gear.
