Establish Success Habits

I feel that this subject can have a major impact on your success.

What If You Did Things Every Day That Created Success In Your Life?

What if these things you did every day were automatic - just like taking a shower, or brushing your teeth, or brushing your hair? Don't you think that if these things you did every day became a habit, you would be much closer to achieving success in your life?

My Guess Is That You Are the Type of Person Who Is Looking To Improve Yourself

I feel that improving ourselves is a goal that many of us have, at least those of us seeking to reach our full potential and achieve our purpose for being on this earth.

It may be that you are trying to improve yourself personally - improve your leadership skills, become more confident, etc. You may be trying to improve your health. You may be trying to educate yourself in another vocation. You may be trying to develop a business on the side. You may be trying to be a better employee. You may be trying to create wealth in your life so you can better support your family. You may be trying to create wealth in your life so you can financially support causes that are important to you - a cure for cancer, child abuse, world hunger, etc.

Success Activities Must Become a Habit

You can set a goal for yourself. You can write it down. You can say affirmations regarding it. You can visualize success in achieving the goal. But none of these things will work unless you do them on a repetitive basis - they must become a habit.

There are probably specific tasks you need to do every day if you are going to reach your goal. They must become a habit.

In their book, The Power of Focus, Jack Canfield, Les Hewitt, and Mark Victor Hansen say, "Up to 90% of our normal behavior is based on habits."

So if most of our behavior is based on habits, and if repetition is the key to success, we must plan our success habits so we can do them automatically every day.

Let's say that you have a goal, and that certain activities, if done daily, will help you reach that goal.

If you do this activity a couple of times, you will move closer to your goal. If this activity becomes a habit and you do it automatically every day, the chance of achieving the goal is increased dramatically.

On the other hand, bad habits prevent you from achieving your goal. Activities that are detrimental to achieving your goal, if done over and over, become a habit, and prevent your success.

Here's an Example

For example, let's say you work in a warehouse and don't like the work you are doing. You have a strong interest in another vocation such as web design. You set a goal to become certified or employable in the new vocation by a certain date. You decide you can achieve your goal if you study two hours each night after work.

If you do what it takes and study every night, this activity becomes a habit. You don't even think about it. It becomes automatic. You just do it.

On the other hand, if you study for a few nights and then decide to take a night off to watch television, that will delay your reaching the goal. However, if you decide to watch television for several nights in a row, that activity is becoming a negative habit. You will probably never reach your goal.

It's up to you. You can choose to establish success habits or negative habits. Just remember that the choice you make will determine your results - good or bad.

Here Are Some Things You Can Do To Establish Success Habits

  • 1. Choose a goal that will improve yourself - your relationships, your wealth, your health, or any other area of your life.
  • 2. Identify those habits that are critical in achieving your goals.
  • 3. Visualize your success in achieving your goal.
  • 4. Chart your progress. If there is an activity that you want to become a habit, record how many times you perform that activity. Most experts say that if you do an activity for 21 straight days, it becomes a habit. The length of time will vary. You will know what it is.
  • 5. Establish short term goals for yourself. For example, reward yourself after doing an activity for ten straight days.
  • 6. Find ways to make the activity enjoyable.

I will give you a personal example. A few years ago I decided to be physically active in order to improve my health. Since I was beyond my sports playing days, I decided to fast walk and lift weights several days a week.

So for many, many years, I have walked 2-4 miles just about every day and lifted weights 3-4 times a week. These two activities have become a habit for me. The key in my establishing these 2 habits is that I enjoy both activities.

But you don't see me out there looking like an Olympic fast walker. You don't see me straining as I lift heavy weights.

I do walk fast but I don't walk so fast that it is uncomfortable. I always walk with my dog which is fun. I generally say affirmations and pray while I am walking. So it is a very enjoyable, uplifting experience.

I lift relatively light weights and do a lot of repetitions. The weights are light enough so I don't strain but heavy enough so they do me some good.

I always feel good after my workouts. I enjoy doing them. I don't dread them in any way. I look forward to them. I have established 2 beneficial habits because I enjoy both activities.

So the bottom line is to establish the success habits you need in order become the person you want to be. Good habits or bad habits - that is your choice.
