Being a Dog Sitter is Fun. I'd Love You to Meet the Doggie Children!

Hi, I am Macy. I am beautiful and one tough lady! I love to play ball. I am an extraordinary outfielder!
Hi, I am Ryley. I am a handsome and outstanding ball catcher! I will play ball with you morning, noon and night!
Hi, I am Ryley. I am a handsome and outstanding ball catcher! I will play ball with you morning, noon and night!
Hi, I am Brodie. I am very cute when I'm not getting into trouble. I am my parent's problem child!
Hi, I am Brodie. I am very cute when I'm not getting into trouble. I am my parent's problem child!
Hi, I am Mr. Finnigan Bear. I am a mini golden doodle and they call me Finni for short. I am adorable and playful! You can most likely find me playing in the bamboo bushes.
Hi, I am Mr. Finnigan Bear. I am a mini golden doodle and they call me Finni for short. I am adorable and playful! You can most likely find me playing in the bamboo bushes.

These four beautiful golden doodles you see to the right are Rich and Rene's doggie children and I am their doggie sitter for the next five days.

I am also Rich and Rene's next door neighbor and have watched them go through some difficult times within the past two years. Their personal challenges are mostly behind them now and they are out celebrating on a much needed and deserved vacation.

To help my neighbors out, I have offered to be their children's doggie sitter so they can have peace of mind that comes from knowing that their doggie children are being cared for by a trusted neighbor. And who, in their right mind, wouldn't want to play with these golden doodle gems!

The exercise I get from dog sitting keeps me in good physical shape. Playing ball, chase and tag, and building forts out in the fresh air does me wonders and I'm sure for Macy, Ryley, Brodie, and Finni too! These pictures were taken after our second afternoon together. Do these dogs look happy and content or what!

My days of dog sitting are sheer delight. Even Brodie the problem child is on best behavior. Just like we humans like company now and then, so too do these delightful animals love when their dog sitter comes to pay a visit. I know they love me and I love them.

I must go now. Doggie breakfast is over and it's time for the dog sitter to go let them doggies out! Be right back!

Back to the drawing board! The doggie children are tuckered out from play, their hair has been combed, treats given out, hugs, beds made and all four doggie children are in taking a nap for their Auntie Dottie, the dog sitter. Good doggies!

Other Things You Can Do As a Responsible Dog Sitter

Being a good dog sitter can mean much more than providing a dog with food and water. Here are a few things you can do while their guardian's are away on vacation:

1. Know the dogs environment and give them plenty of quality time and exercise.

2. Maintain their regular diet and routine and keep doggies safe.

3. Give them plenty of attention while their family is away. Talk to them often and hug them to let them know they are loved.

4. You can bring in the newspaper and mail so potential burglars don't know the house is unoccupied.

5. You can water plants in the summer or shovel snow from the steps before it freezes up in the winter so you or the dogs do not get hurt.

6. You can groom the dogs and they love to have their bellies patted!

7. Know how to tell if a dog needs veterinary attention.

8. Clean up the yard, you know what I mean!

9. Keep the house in better condition than you found it in!

10. Be a good dog sitter and have fun!

Great hub, my friend.  A big thumbs up.

Hey Rich... it's nice to see you up there. But what are you doing on hubpages, you're suppose to be on vacation! Did you happen to check out the voting above. I've been voted in as your official dog sitter. I hope you and Rene don't mind!

I'm glad that you both loved this hub. It was a lot of fun putting it together. I'm willing to bet Rene cried when she watched that first video "Golden Doodles Rule the World". Well I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your much deserved vacation. See you when you return. Take Care. ~Dottie~

While we were away my girlfriend's dog sitter emailed a "doggie update" every day with photos and a summary of what the sitter and the dogs did. It was way beyond the call of duty but earned her a big tip and insured that we'd be hiring her again.

Dottie! A really fun hub! I think you are an excellent doggie sitter. I'll be sure to call you the next time I need one, which will when it snows so you can shovel my driveway too! But seriously...shovel snow? Doesn't that cost extra?

The dogs look great and like they are having a fine time. Great hub!

Christoph, where did I ever say I shovelled driveways? LOL  I did rewrite #5 to be sure I got no such call this winter.  Sorry to dissappoint you!

Your neighbours are so lucky to have you. We have two dogs and love them to bits - Harriett is the star in the photo & we also have Humphrey, a black labrador. So although unfortunately we do not have a dog sitter like you we do have a really wonderful boarding kennel where they can swim in the river, & run madly about in fields enjoying life.

Dottie1 profile image

Dottie1  says:

Thank you ajcor. Harriett is adorable in the photo. I bet Harriett and Humphrey both love swimming in the river and running about in the fields. What dog wouldn't. Sounds like a real good kennel you found for your doggies. Not all people are as lucky! I have heard so many not so good stories and I'm glad you shared a good one here.

Does that mean I'm not being nominated now! What a bummer. Maybe I should shovel driveways.

I love your videos on youtube of your family doggy sitting. Great pictures of your doggy friends too. I used to walk my siberian husky for years, so I know what it takes to take care of a dog, they are like children really :). Great hub.

Thanks SweetiePie for stopping by. I grew up with dogs and cats but do not have any pets at the moment. It doesn't feel that way though. I have 4 golden doodle dogs that live to the right of me, 2 boxer dogs to the left, and 2 pug dogs across the street and my sisters dog who wanders up the street to occasionally pay a visit when she gets loose. They are all great dogs!

Dottie1! My Dad used to say that you can find out what a person is really like when you look at how they treat their pets. Well my dear I would say that you passed with flying colors. My Dad was seldom wrong and have a look at that intricate pole... 100% score... it can't get better than that.

Hi, Dottie :) Your dogs look so cute and i can tell they are in the best hands possible!

I'm assuming after this hub, your now fully booked with lots of people wanting you to doggy sit for them!:)

Zsuzsy....Fathers always know best, don't they? I'm the official sitter now although I have been since they were pups! Thanks for stopping by.

Compu-smart....they are little cuteees aren't they.  I love when I pull into my driveway and I see the four of them peeking out the window at me. Sometimes I just wave because when I start talking to them they start barking and going nuts!  If it's late, I don't want to wake up the whole neighborhood! lol

My last booking was for my sister's 22 year old daughter, my niece! She was being naughty so I had to spy on her for 10 days! Along with her was my other 15 yr. old niece, 1 dog, and 3 cats! I think I better learn to just say NO...until they ask again!

I was thinking Dottie, what a beautiful way of making money looking after dogs! or any pets for that matter and proberly one of the best jobs in the world!

Dottie1 profile image

Dottie1  says:

Compu-smart, I never actually thought about that but out of curiosity this is what a quick google search says about pet sitting:

Pet sitting is a wonderful income opportunity, because everyone benefits – the traveler, the animals and the pet sitter. Based on love and value, the service clearly is in demand and growing more popular. Caring for animals is emotionally rewarding, and it can be profitable. Overpowering the serious aspects are the fun ones: satisfaction, creativity and the opportunity to tailor your particular style.

I actually do pretty good with the doggies next door. These cute kids even thought of me on Mothers Day. They went to the Gingerbread House and bought me fresh muffins, a blueberry and an orange cranberry bread. And they always think of me at Christmas too! Whose more spoiled, me of course!

Hi sis Dottie, it took me a long time to click on this hub because I would feel odd and different from everyone else. I have a confession to make. I'm scared of dogs! (hides face in the hands). They are cute and adorable and I can see how they can be man's best friend. And I know I am a loony but can I just adore them from a few feet away? LOL Now this is something I have to overcome. But reading your hub, I see you had all the love and care treating your neighbor's pets. You are such a dear! :)

Dottie1 profile image

Dottie1  says:

Thanks for sharing your confession sis! I have a confession too! I have a fear of dogs because I was knocked down by one and the little shit bit my ear! His owner made him stay in the cellar for the rest of the day. That will teach him to mess with girls! It is easy to care for my neighbors dogs because I've known them all since they were puppies. Thanks for stopping by. You are such a dear too! :)

Hi Dottie, goodness gracious. Good thing your ear is still intact. I so appreciate the fact that you are so kind enough not to make me feel uncomfortable with my confession. LOL Thank you my Taurean sis :)

Hi Michelle,

One thing I've learned when I am feeling fearful around a dog is to NOT make any eye contact with the dog. I grew up with lots of dogs. Even though this did happen to me I do still love dogs. I am just more caution around different breeds. I think if you find a little puppy to love, you will move beyond your fear. :)

Funny you should ask ripplemaker. I am just finishing up 9 days of doggie sitting with the doggie kids. My neighbors went on a carnival cruise on the freedom ship to celebrate her 40th birthday. Just waiting now for their return. How sweeeet it is teaching the dogs to sing Happy Birthday to their mama! wuf wuf wuf wuf wuf wuf..LOL

Hi Dottie,

What a great hub! I am staying with a friend here in LA and one of my tasks is to walk Misha, a coyote/German Shepherd mix. We go on long walks and I always clean up the mess.

It's inspiring to see how many people share your love of dogs!

I was told when you meet a new dog, never stare. Blink a lot and never raise your hand over the dog's head. Bend down and let him sniff you.

I look forward to reading all of your hubs!
