How To Become A Pilates Instructor
73
Pilates certification is a crucial part of becoming a successful Pilates instructor. If you attend Pilates classes, it’s highly important that your instructor is certified in Pilates for your personal safety. Since Pilates was created with the idea that all movement starts from the center or core of your body, it’s important that your Pilates instructor understands the principles of Pilates and can train you in the best way possible to make your exercise effective and not dangerous.
Pilates Certification
You want to feel confident that you are learning from a top Pilates instructor and a Pilates certification is the key. There are two levels of Pilates certification: basic mat instructor and comprehensive Pilates certification. A comprehensive Pilates certification can take over 600 hours of training and requires a significant commitment on the part of the would-be instructor. It can cost more than $5,000 to gain your certification. However, through your certification and training, you will learn how to instruct students on a mat class, using the reformer, the Cadillac, tower workouts and more. You will learn how to teach an advanced level class, as well as how to provide any modifications that might be needed for some students.
Some of the top schools for Pilates certification include the following:
- BASI Pilates – training in contemporary Pilates, this training period lasts 3 weekends and has 12 modules; total cost is approximately $3,900
- Core Pilates – training in classical Pilates techniques, this 6-weekend course has monthly review meetings; total cost is approximately $4,500
- Peak Pilates – another certification for contemporary Pilates, this training is offered in 3 levels and costs approximately $4,300
- Physical Mind Institute or PMI – mat certification is a prerequisite for this style of contemporary Pilates training and costs $2,700 approximately
- Polestar Pilates – for an additional layer of rehabilitation exercises, this form of contemporary training offers educational training and costs $5,000
- Power Pilates – available as a 4-weekend course with 16 weekly meetings, this form of classical Pilates costs $4,000
- Romana’s Pilates – a Pilates elder that trained directly with Joseph Pilates, Romana Kryzanowska was considered one of his closest students; this program offers the most traditional Pilates classes and costs approximately $5,750

Pilates Instructor Career Benefits
After your Pilates certification is complete, you will need to find an instruction center that can hire you. What should you expect to be paid if you are a recently-certified instructor?
Like most careers, salaries are often dependent upon experience, but many full-time Pilates instructors report making between $45,000 and $65,000 a year. On the other hand, you might be asked to sign a yearly contract before they will commit to an annual salary, but will promise you a minimum of $650 a week during the time you teach classes there.
Since the class schedule is flexible, the working hours for a Pilates instructor can vary drastically. You might find yourself working early in the morning or staying late once or twice a week to accommodate individuals with full-time jobs who cannot make it during other class times. Weekends are other popular times to have Pilates classes, so having a flexible work schedule is critical!

Thanks 'awsydney'. I do have a friend that is quite interested in becoming an instructor and have heard of stories how Pilates can transform your spine.
I've just been doing Pilates since earlier this year, but do look forward to a stronger core and have already seen improvements.
i would like to become one i guess i got a lot of work to do first !
It's a good work out and as an instructor you can be helping people's lives.
Hello Music Lady,
I appreciate the info about the Pilates Instruction Certification. It would be quite a committment, both physically and financially, but I believe it would be worth-while. I will pray where the Lord will lead me. I truly believe Pilates can help the elderly who cannot do more strenous excercises any longer. That would be my goal as an instructor...God bless you.

Hi Music Lady, with the current financial crisis, this might be a great way for women to find alternative work. Here in Australia, there was a significant increased reported in women taking up florist courses. Good on women who try to take the initiative to start something on their own as an alternative to depend on a company to offer them work which may or may not even come by. Besides, this is a healthy activity as well! Thanks for sharing this and I'm sure there will be people who are looking for alternative careers will find this useful. Have a great day!
