How To Become Energy Independent
64
Becoming energy independent of oil companies should be the primary goal of the 21st century. The technology already exist whereby we would be able to power our homes and vehicles on the power produced completely by solar, wind and hydro electricity. By buying an electric car or switching to all wind produced energy you are protesting the oil trade and the greed that has ensued from those businessess.
But How to do it? How do we become independent and live a life 'off the grid?' The technology is there but many are deterred by the cost for all the supplies needed. The first step is to realize that this is a process and that it needs to be done in stages so that you can make the transition as painless as possible.
1. Make the Simple Changes
The first step to living green is to make all of the simple and easy changes to your home. This means changing all of the light-bulbs to compact florescent or LED lights. Also be sure to purchase high-efficiency appliances. Be sure to pay special attention at getting a quality refrigerator that will run at above Energy Star standards.
After you've done all that try changing bad habits like leaving lights on or leaving the computer running when not in use. It might be hard at first but developing good habits now is essential for later.
2. Asses Evergy Consumption Needs
Once you have cut your electricity levels down to a level you are comfortable living with than now you are ready to have those needs assesed. Review your electricity bill and find out how much KW/h you use on average. 21KW/h is typical of a family.
Once you have assessed your needs you are ready to find out what your options are.
3. Options Available
Every geographic region have different green venues at their disposal. Living in Southern California you'll get lots of sun, in Kansas you'll have an abundance of wind. Asses your region and find out what is effective and what is just a waste of time.
4. Build Your Own Home Generator
In some cases you may have the benefit of being able to install solar panels, solar water heaters, wind generators and rain barrels. Start with one project at a time and go from there. If you are handy there are many great books and video tutorials that give you a step by step walk through on building your own windmill, and electric solar panels.
If you'd rather have it professionally installed than make sure to shop around for a good deal as they could cost huge globs of money.
If you are a do it yourself er than go ahead and get started on this. Windmills are easily made with just car batteries, a old car alternator and propellers that can also be made. Solar panels require some soldering skill but nothing a novice couldn't handle.
When finished be sure to send pictures and let me know how it turned out!
