How To Cancel A Facebook Friend Request
77
When researching this piece, I had absolutely no idea whether or not you could cancel a Facebook friend request. The good news is that you can, although thousands would have you believe you can't, I stumbled upon - as an example "no cancelling once a friend request has been sent. IT'S LIKE AN EMAIL, ONCE YOU SEND IT NO TURNING BACK!" and "if you requested it then no you cant". Even Facebook say that this is not possible, well clearly they don't know their own systems well enough. Well the good news is that these hoards of idiots are completely wrong, cancelling a friend request is incredibly easy. And below you will find out how in 4 easy steps.......
Step 1
Well I guess that it has already been established that you wish to cancel a friend request that you have just made. The first thing that you need to do is to click on the 'privacy' link which is located in the upper right hand corner of your screen/the page.
Step 2
Here you should be presented with a number of options, one of these is a section called 'Block People', go to this section.
Step 3
Enter the name of the recipient and click 'block'.
Step 4
Facebook will now present you with a list of people with that name, obviously this list will be very long if you added 'Adam Smith', and very short if you added 'Apple Pineapple Hilton Paris'. Locate the person that you have just added and click 'Block Person'.The person that you mistakenly/drunkenly added will now be blocked from seeing your friend request, fortunately I have just saved you embarrassment..... and I will feel forever smug at my achievements. You can also now immediately 'unblock' this person, and they will still not receive a friend request, meaning that they can still add you in future (perhaps applicable to those that were embarrassed to add somebody that they fancy and were worried about rejection).
A few things to consider before you cancel facebook friend requests.....
- If the person you added has chosen to receive email notifications of friends requests, you must act very quickly to avoid the embarrassment of having them know what you have done. In fact, they will probably (hopefully) find this article out of curiosity.
- If the person is online when you send the friend request, which can be determined by looking at the 'chat' function..... they may have already seen the request, in which case you are going to have to swallow your pride and face the consequences of your actions.
- If somebody does see your friend request, and you do block them, then it will be necessary to try and convince them that it was a Facebook glitch......
- If you would like to retain the chance of that person adding you as a friend at a later date, then it is necessary for you to unblock that person so that they can have any chance of finding you.

Hi paulawoolley, your best bet is to think long and hard about adding somebody, and not going to facebook if you have had a drink ;)
hi ryan i actualy worked this out for myself and was very chuffed!!! but like you say depending on the popularity of the name and that becomes even worse when they have no picture, because once you search there friends to see if it is them, you loose the option to block,so the morral of the story is dont add friends without thinking first !!! carefully!!!!! your info was good as i wsnt sure what happened after you blocked them after a friend request now i know thank you ryan :)
If i add somebody as friend how long will she/he see that i added her/him? IF she not add me or ignore, then when will my
request disappering?
Karolina, the answer is never. She sees the request until she accepts or rejects, unless you block her.
thank you :)
Ooorrrrrr, you can click FRIENDS at the top left hand corner of your main (not home) page, then click CONNECTIONS on the far left menu bar, whereupon the names of all your friends and the people youve friend-requested appears, and click on the "x" icon next to their names to cancel friend request.
Sorry, the FRIENDS option also appears above your home page, and it's ALL CONNECTIONS not CONNECTIONS. also, this works most of the time - but there will be one or two that won't appear. I dunno why - could be their individual settings.
I blocked now one of my friends which i added him yestarday to my face book.I would like to ask he still could see me in his friends list...
please answer me
Monika, I dont really understand whether you are trying to ask me a question or you are stating a fact, can you re-phrase the question? If you blocked one of your friends, then he should not be able to see you in his friends list, if that is what you are asking.
ryankett,Iam sorry my english lang. is not good. I want only to be sure if I blocked one of my friends in facebook that he will not be able to see me any more in his friends list cz i don't want him to see me any more,or my comment
thank you v.much.
Hi Monika, if you block your friend he will not be able to see your name anywhere on facebook including his friends list, so good news for you. It will just look like you have deleted your whole facebook account. Regards, Ryan.
Hi, Ryankett Thank you. May the Lord bless u.
hi ryan! thanks for sharing this knowledge. i have one question if you don't mind cuz i just view this ex-friend in and realized i accidentally added her. i tried your steps and i think i blocked that person before she sees my friend request. i also read that blocking a person prevent him/her to be able to search you in facebook which i don't want to happen because i only wanted to cancel my friend request. i still wanted her to find my account in facebook. if given a month or so, i will removed her from my blocked list, will my friend request reaappear on her account?
one more question ;) is the notification via email deleted too when you blocked that person? cuz when you add a friend, fb will automatically send an email notification.
@maeve - you can unblock her immediately, and the friend request will not reappear. As for the email, if you block her quick enough then you can beat the email; in other words, the email is not normally instant. Some people also have email notifications turned off. BUT.... that is the major risk. If she doesnt know about this trick, then you can fob her off by saying something like "oh, yeah I did add you as a friend, did you not get the request? thats strange must be a glitch" lol
wow thanks ryan for having time answering my queries ;) hope i blocked her fast enough to beat the email notification. my fingers crossed! ;) if not then i will just have to use your last statement.hehehehe! thanks again and have a nice day! ;)
thanks this works just swell... but you can also just go to the person you friend requested and block them then as you stated go to setting then privacy setting and remove the block... thanks again!
Thanks Ryan! I was suggested to add a mutual friend and the guy decided to add all my other friends but not me. Luckily you've found a way for me to resolve this - I really appreciate it. :)
Wait so If you add someone and then quickly decide, maybe I didnt want this person added and you do the block...what about the email that is sent to their email? doesnt it show regardless of the block?
I have explained that in the article Diana.
Thanks, ryan! I only recently set up a facebook profile...I know, I'm so late to the party! Anyway, decided to read your hubs on it, and you have some funny, useful information. Nice job!
Damn! so this means the girl I stalk has a way out?
Do you know (roughly) how long it takes for the system to send the e-mail once you make the request? i maybe blocked the person within 5-10 minutes of requesting. Was that quick enough!?
