How To Choose The Right Halloween Costume

Each year we go through the same ordeal, trying to pick out that perfect costume. There is a lot that goes into this process for some of us, and for me I don't want to be the cop-out guy who just goes and buys the same thing on the shelf that everyone else gets. I've been there, done that, so I cant criticize it, but there are certain times when that pre-packaged costume won't cut it. So here are a few tips if you are looking to be that "stand-out" at your next halloween party.

#1. Choose something creative. Like I said, anyone can buy a $20-40 costume off a rack, but you can also put that same amount of money towards a unique costume that I think is even better. (pictures below of costumes that cost me and others under $40). Put your mind to work early, start thinking a couple months out, because it's likely you will change your mind several times or think of something better.

#2. Choose something that is relevant to the times. Sure, you can be that old school character that keeps coming back year after year like Superman or a cheerleader (boring), and that isn't the worst way to go I suppose, but if you can choose something or someone that is basically a current event within the last year, reactions are better. People like to identify with something fun that they can spot immediately and have a good laugh about. It makes for a better conversation also, because likely it is something that people have been paying attention to.

#3. Don't go overboard with accessories. I'm talking about things that you hold or put over your face especially. People always end up setting their props down and losing them or taking their "masks" off because it's just not that functional. Most parties will have beverages, and the more you have to lift up that mask or set something down, the less you are going to wear it. So make sure that these items aren't the centerpiece of your costume. Also, if certain types of drinks are at this party chances are you will go home without them, and that's not money well spent.

#4. Individual vs. group. This is a big one, because if you are in a group costume (ie. Fantastic 4, Ninja Turtles, Britney and K-Fed, or something similar) then it is ESSENTIAL that you stick together. This is a good idea for parties you may go to where you don't know too many people, because then you have a reason to hang around people that you do know, and also is easier to meet people. If you are an individual on the other hand, you have a little more leeway with where you roam. You can even head out to another party without having to take the gang with you who may want to stay. I have tried both, both are fun, just make sure you don't have any party poopers.

#5. Be frugal, save your money. Remember, this is a once a year, one night thing. There is no reason to spend a ton on your costume, because as you can see below you can have great costumes for hardly anything. It isn't like you are going to wear this thing again (if you do, then you are shameless and predictable every year and no one will be excited about you coming). The main thing is to invest in the key things that you DON'T have at home, and that stand out on the costume, such as the shirt, pants, hat, whatever. If you can make it from home, then by all means just do it, it is worth it. You can even possibly borrow parts from friends, just make sure don't leave anything borrowed behind.

With these tips, hopefully you can think of some new ideas and ways to celebrate All Hallows Eve. It is a fun time of year and a good time to go outside your comfort zone and just be crazy. Good luck.

Thanks for answering the request and I had better get an invite to your Halloween party this year. Great tips on the costumes, too...now, where did you find that sweet moustache?
