How To Decorate A Curved Staircase

Why Traditional Decor Won't Work
If you have a curved staircase, you are lucky indeed. The graceful sweep of a curved staircase really makes your home feel magnificent and grand. So many people waste this vast amount of wall space, leaving it...empty. Why?!? The curved walls practically beg for some art. The problem is that curved walls make it just about impossible to hang paintings, framed prints, and accent shelving without very costly custom cutting. People paint the curved walls, which is certainly a step in the right direction. However, such grandeur deserves better than just paint.
Non-Rigid Forms
That's right. It's as simple as finding art that isn't in a fixed shape. Your mind may start to wonder thinking of strange modern art pieces. If that is what you like, then go for it. However, if you want something more traditional to match your decor, take a look at wall tapestries. I know. It's like a "duh" moment. Tapestries really are the perfect solution to your curved staircase woes.
They are especially effective in very large open curved staircases. The vast expanse of wall space gives you many options. For a rich and sophisticated look, hang a large tapestry centered on the wall space. It recalls the look of old medieval castles, and will definitely make an impression. For a museum look, you can hang several smaller tapestries, ascending with the natural curve of the stairs. This has a very powerful effect, especially when you have two curved staircases in an open foyer format. Two or three medium sized tapestries also work very well in an ascending fashion.
How To Hang A Tapestry On A Curved Wall
There are so many ways to hang a tapestry on a curved surface. The one thing you must keep in mind is to distribute the weight of the tapestry evenly. If you leave a large section unsupported, the warp fibers will stretch and your tapestry will sag over time.
Many people I have spoken to swear on corkboard strips. They say the corkboard is easy to attach to the wall (via wide flat head nails) and tacking up the tapestry from there is very easy. I have also seen people use steel wire and hooks which, to me anyway, sounds much easier than the corkboard strips. The steel wire is what makes the most sense to me. It keeps the tapestry hanging uniformly and can easily be attached to the wall via a screw or hooks.
Just imagine how awesome your grand staircase will look when decorated with your favorite art tapestries. You will never look at wall decor the same again!
