How To Draw A Dalek

 Every now and then I have drawing time with my son, it's a chance to get drawing our favourite stuff and today it was a Dalek from Doctor Who and this was the first time that I had ever drawn a Dalek, which was quite wierd particularly as Doctor Who is my most favourite show on the planet and I like to draw every chance that I get.

We had a visual reference in the form of a small sized golden Dalek figure from the daleks of manhattan episode to draw from and I drew the first Dalek so my son could watch How I tackled it.

And here is that picture below!

 As you may know, Daleks are supposed to resemble a pepperpot or salt shaker and this is reflected in the design of the Dalek so I started off with the curved dome on the Daleks exterior and shifted the design to show the Dalek on a side view.

You can see the rough shape that I ended up with below.

 Adding the Dalek weapons was the next logical step to draw this at this stage was so that I would not draw over the lines and small ball designs.

The eye stalk and the two light bulbs were added to the dome head, then the whisk and the plunger as they appear to look like (Classic Doctor Who Design At It's very best!!)

This is the best part of the drawing for me, everything coming together as a largely successful drawing, we have the spheres on the casing of the Dalek and the grill just below the top domed helmet, the weapons are even more defined now I've gone over the first pencil lines.

Now you if you wish can begin to draw a background for the Dalek which could help put it in a setting and just help the Dalek settle on the page in a composition.

Drawing Daleks has been fun, so I think we will be drawing Cybermen next and from there who knows...
