Step 1: Choose an appropriate spot in your home for the kitty litter. The kitty litter should be placed in a well ventilated area of the home that is easily accessible to the cat at all times. Ideally, the room that contains the kitty litter should have a window that opens in order to air out the room if necessary.

Step 2: Use a clumping litter so that you can easily scoop out the poop. In order to avoid odors, scoop the poop daily. Not only will this keep the litter box clean, it will also encourage your cat to use it. If ever your cat makes a mess in the house, it’s probably because her litter box is dirty.

Step 3: If your cat urinates in a spot other than her litter box, soak up the urine with a paper towel. Then apply something to neutralize the odor. Ammonia, lemon juice and vinegar are all options. This should be done immediately as the cat will attempt to urinate on the spot over and over as a result of her instinct to mark her spot.

Step 4: Keep your carpets clean. There are several products on the market that involve you shaking out a scented powder onto the carpet, letting it sit and then vacuuming it up. The same result can be achieved with good ol’ fashioned baking soda.

Step 5: Spray your furniture and drapes with a deodorizer.

Step 6: Although this is not the best option, you can attempt to disguise the odor with candles or products that plug in and emit scented sprays.

Step 7: Make sure that the odors in your home are not coming from the cat itself. Cats bathe themselves, and sometimes require a bath from its owner, but should never emit a smell from its skin. If the cat smells, you’ll need to take it to the vet so he/she can investigate a possible skin disorder.
