How to Regain A Sense of Peace After A Traumatic Event

All of us have some, or even many, events in our past that we wished never had happened.

Events that made us feel afraid, sad, angry, ashamed... the whole gamut of negative emotions.

Often events where there was a strong emotional component have great impacts on us lives. In a split moment, not only did we "freeze-frame" the event, capturing it, we made decisions about ourselves, and the world.

These decisions, that we made in a moment of great emotional stress, can stay with us for a life time, causing anxiety, depression, low self esteem and even physical illnesses.

Anyone who has done some personal growth work on themselves have undoubtedly come across scores of past events where the conclusion was that the world is an unsafe place, or, that we somehow are flawed, unworthy or unlovable.

What is a traumatic event? A traumatic event is whatever is traumatic to the person. Sometimes it can be an almost fatal accident, being shot at, raped, or being in a war. However, a less dramatic event, but one that can have as serious consequences, can be a moment when a parent looked at you "just that way" and you just crumbled, or when your 2nd grade teacher made fun of you in front of the entire class.

In the past getting over these events could take years of painstaking work. Talking about the event, feeling the event, playing out the event.... Lot's of effort and for the most part, the bad feelings are still there.

In the early nineties, acupuncture physician Tapas Fleming while working with a specialized acupressure technique to eliminate allergic reactions had a patient who had sensitivities to regular table salt.

After doing the protocol which takes around 15 minutes her patient reported that An issue she had had since childhood, and one she had spent years of therapy trying to deal with seemed to have disappeared.

She said: "For the first time, when I think about it, it doesn't bother me" Her issues was that as a little girl she had been taken by a relative to the neighborhood bar. The relative allowed the men to sexually abuse her, and as "payment" she received one bag of potato chips.

Somehow her mind had equated the salty chips with the abuse. Clearing the sensitivity to the salt cleared the traumas as well. Tapas was surprised at the relief of her patients memories.
