How To Find The Best Depression Treatment Centers
77Depression is a serious illness in the United States, with approximately 19 million people suffering each year. The seriousness of the illness is made clear in the number lives and families marred by this silent and painful condition. Thankfully, there are several different approaches that a person can taking in finding a cure for their depression, if such a thing as a cure exists. One of the main ways that people who have suffered from depression for extended periods of time adopt is going to a depression treatment center.
At a treatment center you will get some much needed support for a friendly and trained staff - that is if you choose a good depression treatment center.
But before we get into how to go about picking the best depression treatment center we should take a look at a few of the things that you are not doing by going to a treatment center for depression:
- You are not being weak. It takes a lot of internal strength to be able to admit that your problems are bigger than yourself. You might not be able to handle them all by yourself, but at least you have the fortitude to admit that you need help to get over what you are going through.
- You are not being stupid. It is a great decision to seek help for depression at a certified treatment center. They have trained staff that has years of experience helping individuals recover from their bouts of sadness. Give yourself a break and accept the help of others. It is the smart thing to do.
- You are not running from your problems. Sometimes it can feel that when we step away from the world we live in every day that we are hiding from our problems. This is not the case. What you are doing is giving yourself some perspective on your problems and working on dealing with them rather than just coping with them. Dealing with problems can sometimes mean that you step back and get perspective, not step back and run away.
- You are not locking yourself up. You shouldn't get some notion that you are going to a court ordered rehab where you can't see the light of day for 3 months just because you are going to a depression rehab center. You are going to be free to leave whenever you wish and are there on a completely voluntary basis. While I do think that you should probably finish your treatment there is you want optimal results, you can certainly leave when you wish.
So, now that we have outlined a few things that you are not doing by going to a treatment center we should focus on how to make the choice of which depression treatment center you should gain admittance to. Here is a quick list of things that I think you should look for:
- They take a holistic approach to depression. Depression is
often about much more than brain chemicals. It is certainly about brain
chemicals, but the brain is such a complex thing that focusing only on
the abilities ability to absorb dopamine or some other brain chemical
is not going to provide results for every individual. There are social,
psychological, and neuropsychological issues that can lead to
depression and taking an approach that touches on all three is going to
provide the best outcomes for patients and their families. You want to
be a healthy person by the time you leave a treatment center, not just
a person who isn't depressed.
- The staff is friendly and
approachable. If you can't see yourself opening up to the staff of the
treatment center then how can you expect to be able to get better.
Everyone at the treatment facility is going to have an impact on your
recovery there - the janitorial staff, the doctors, the nurses, the
other secretaries, even the food staff. You want to be in as friendly
and inviting of a place as you possibly can so making sure that you can
get along with the staff is important.
- The facilities
are clean and comfortable. You want to be able to sleep on the beds
comfortably, take your ease on the lawn, or play a few games in the
parlor with ease. It also helps if the grounds are beautiful or
particularly tranquil.
- The treatment center comes
highly recommended. Having heard great things about a depression
treatment center is certainly no guarantee of success, but it certainly
doesn't hurt. If everyone who goes to a center says that it sucks do
you really want to spend lots of money to get treated there? I didn't
think so.
If you can find a depression treatment center that fits all four of these criteria you are probably going to have a positive experience at your facility of choice. You may still suffer from depression, but at least you spent some good time in a healthy, safe, and clean environment.
