What Good Home Based Business Leads?

If you are trying to help people start their own home based business, or build your network marketing downline, it is critical to get a nice flow of quality , hot leads to work with.

In most cases you have one of three options. Buy leads, recruit or pitch your friends or family, or generate your leads. I can't see a single advantage to trying to recruit friends and family. All you do there is slam something down the throat someone who trusts you. Or you give them a guilt trip so they lay out some money, usually a "donation" of support. But, they don't like it, and they won't be a builder for you!

Buying leads is an option as well, if you will work the leads, have a thick skin, and buy quality, ethical leads. Sometimes this is a chore to figure out, and if you want some details on it, click over to the right and request a detailed article on choosing good leads.

The third option, and the one that successful net workers or distributors use, is generating their own leads. This is truly the key to your success. It is also easier than you might think!

Quit Looking for Opportunity Seekers

Before you freak out and say " but I want home based business" seekers. NO you don't, well not if you are just starting out, and not UNLESS you are a bulldog and super closer on the phone.

Why? Because most people that request information on a home based business, are tire kickers. They really have no direction, and usually no money and no drive.

So who do you want? You want product users. The reason you want product users is:

  1. They believe in the product
  2. They will buy and continue to use the product
  3. They will recommend the product because they love it - hence build the business
  4. They will be bringing in more product users, who may become builders and even if they don't you still make money on the product usage.
  5. They actually have money!

This can sometimes be a hard concept, but it is the concept that makes big income earners vs. struggling distributors or sale people. IF you have a question or comment, please leave it below or click to the right and shoot me a message, I will explain/help where i can.

I was told to succeed in network marketing, you should focus your efforts in recruiting other trained network marketers. If you get leads to sign up, they usually quit in 3 months or less.

It's kinda like paddling up the waterfall.

It is always a good idea to "sponsor up" as they say. Meaning that you should talk to people of influence or people that are confident and already have a basis for success. A big problem within the industry is that people sponsor others that have no experience whatsoever and they have not properly qualified them for their business. It's crazy.... far too many people act in "desperation" and try and recruit anyone. There is a major problem and that is lack of training when someone gets started. It will take people time to get trained and other take longer than others and you will always have people quit and say it didn't work for them. Get with a team that is making things happen and stick with them. Did I mention that it's good to be part of a great company too. Back to lead generation, this is about all you will need. Thank me later....

Good overall MLM advice. I would add that in addition to product users, a good target market is people already working businesses in the network marketing/MLM industry. They may not buy your products or join your comapny immediately, but if you maintain a relationship with them (through some sort of autorepsonder), you have a much better chance of having them join you when they decide their current opportunity is not working out for them.

Amackens - you are correct. I agree completely. relationships are very important. The one point to the article is that the average net worker is not going to sponsor more than two people, and those are normally friends. That is, unless they change their thinking and tactics. The average or non- heavy hitter is not going to "recruit" and probably does not know anyone prominent in the industry, so I am trying to give them some help on how to be successful and make the business work for them. Keeping relationships though is key, because you never know when someone may find your business the "right one" at the "right time".

Why do Product users Equal Free Home Based Business Leads?

This was somewhat addressed above, but to re-enforce the thought process, here is how it goes.

If you have nutrition product that is also a business opportunity, and you are trying to market both to the same person, you are shooting yourself in the foot. They are either interested in making money, or interested in health. They are not interested in both at the same time. It does not matter how many times someone in your company or a script has said "how would you like to make money and improve your health at the same time?" that just does not fly or work.

Go ahead, ask a few people and watch their reaction. They either humor you, or start coming up with excuses to run, but they rarely ever join and they won't even listen to information about your product as they already have a perception that you are their to "recruit" them.

Now, instead of placing PPC ads, or trying to recruit and get users and distributors at the same time, how about just focusing on one or the other - my choice and example in this article is the product.

Lead with the product, and the business will grow.

How to Get Cheap Product Leads

One thing you may be saying, depending on what field or industry you are in, is - how do I get product leads, and how do I get them at an affordable rate? Using google or other on or offline advertising can get costly, especially if you are not sure what you are doing.

So you do this by creating a marketing funnel . You simply offer some type of free, useful hook so that people will respond favorably to your ads, and you get leads for each ad you place vs. spending money and never seeing any return.

When you just place an ad with contact information, a product picture, and maybe a tag line, your response is going to be next to zero. However, if you are targeting people with sleep problems, and you offer a free ebook, or a free product that helps them get a good nights sleep, your response rate will go off the charts. And even if there is a small response, they are targeted, and ready to find a solution for their problem.

Once they read what you have to say, your sale will become much easier. Once they try the product, if it is any good, and IF you deliver good follow up and customer service, your next move will be to let them know how they can get the products at wholesale - the opening for the business opportunity!

Cheap Ideas for Finding Customers

You do not have to go crazy spending money to find customers. There are a lot of very cheap methods. Again, if you want more detail on anything in this section or article, please leave me a message. I can't cover everything but I will try help you if you ask.

OK - ides for inexpensive or free customer generation:

EBay - it is low cost to list on eBay to get exposure for the product

EBay - again, sell something very cheap that targets your customer, and then back-end them on the product (if you email me, I can give you a source to get a good hook and item to offer depending on your industry)

Forums on the net- participate in forums that are targeting your niche. This process does take some time, as you need to build a relationship, but it works.

Postcards - no not mailing them - print them up and distribute them to doors, car windshields, etc. This is a hit or miss, but if you have a good hook, you will get a good funnel going

Cheap classifieds offline - cheap display or classified ads offline in local papers, IF you have a hook, do great. If you are just listing the product, you are wasting your money. It is all about the hook.

Online classified sites - this can be effective but also time consuming for free ones. It is worth looking at

Bartering - if you want to advertise in a newsletter or on a website but conserve cash, offer to barter. Folks with unsold ad space will usually do this, or you can offer a give away to their list, which helps them build excitement as well.

Think a little, find a niche to target so you are not competing with the rest of the world. Conquer that niche, then move on. Each time you get a new customer, you should have a new down-line member if you do things right.

Below are some references to sites that may also help you depending on where you are in your business plan.

Great Hub and excellent advice! I certainly agree that it is best to begin with the products first. After all, if you find someone interested in the business but they find that they don't like the products, what have you gained? Good job!

Right on Bonnie. You know in several years of helping people in all business types grow, the hardest is helping those who simply want to recruit and not truely believe in or develop their product base. Helping them generate product funnels has been the best thing for those who want to be successful.

Hello SmallBizHelp,

Appreciated your abundance mentality in sharing tips to get things going at a much easier and even higher level for a good home-based business. I do have an issue however with Mike Dillard's offer which I accepted...and that is "getting assistance was virtually impossible unless maybe I started out at his MagFormula program level costing upwards of $400." He rarely answered any of my questions upon first submittal and I can only remember hearing from a Mindy in his customer service department via email on three occassions after multiple attempts to get questions answered and even then the answers were not complete because I don't think Mindy understood his business. So I decided Mike was not a business man I wished to emulate if I couldn't get assistance from an entry-level involvement. Sounds like you took advantage of his higher cost offer...the upgrade was pitched to me directly after signing for the basic program.

I would be interested in learning more about your experience.

Thx

Olin
