Starting a website to make a profit is not just a case of designing a website and putting it on the net. Research your market, promote your website, work hard and believe in yourself. If you are determined to make it work then the profits should start to roll in. As long as you keep in mind "Rome wasn't built in a day" don't expect everything to happen overnight. Businesses can take months or even years to become fully successful. If you feel that you're getting know were, change your tactics, think outside the box, keep looking for that new idea. You never know today might be the day that the traffic starts to show.

With the search engines being so heavily used now you are going to have to research, research and research some more, while putting a lot of work in to making your website stand out from the competition. And believe me there is a lot of competition out there. The key is to promote, if you spend time here you will generate traffic.

Below is some important ideas that will help you get started. I have added links for each topic.

1. Shopping Comparison Engines: Is a cheaper way of getting traffic than Adwords - I would recommend that you list some items on other sites. I personally have opened a ebay shop, this can also drive traffic back to your own store. When adding listings add a link to your about me page, were you can advertise your own websites details. Any traffic driven here can check out your own online website. Each person that buys an item should be added to your list so you can send future promotions to gain more sales.

If opening a shop make sure it's a similar name to your online website ex: ebay shop: Lippylisious Cosmetics own website Lippylisious Cosmetics. When searched both will show up together.

Register your ebay shop as a business, this will build confidence with your buyers and will make them more likely to buy your items.

2.Free Search Engine Business Directories: Add your sites to as much business directories as possible, you can have a free listing on most, then upgrade if you want your items to be shown on the top of there sites. By adding these sites your website will be shown on Google free of charge. Make sure you add good information about your website as most will ask for a description.

3. Google: This is the greatest one of all for getting some listings on for free. Sign up for a google account, when signed up you can use all the following methods for free. Applying the following from Google will take a good few days to apply but is worth it if done properly. After all it is free

a. Local Business, If you sign up your business details, you will be sent an activation code to approve your business address. When this is done you're site will be shown on Google maps. Anyone searching your area for types of products that you would sell will be shown a list of places to buy. Your address will be on that list when your account has been activated. Today i have been contacted twice through this search, 1 - asking for hair extensions and another asking for some wholesale products, definitely can drive traffic in your area.

b. Google base: This is a service that allows you to add any item free to the google network. You can add whatever information you like. When applied these will be made searchable online, this isn't always guaranteed. This site has been set up by google for businesses so it is completely safe.

c. AdSence: You can generate cash with Adds on your web site and blogs without selling any items. You will earn money on cost per click. Computer Gurus set up websites to generate cash this way alone. When you sign into google you can add your website and blog information, you will receive HTML codes to add to your pages, which will allow you to add the links to your sites. Each time they are clicked you will make money.

d. Webmaster, Google Webmaster is a tool that will provide you with detailed reports. It will give you reports on your pages visibility on Google. This is a easy tool to use. You add your site in webmaster, google will then give you a code to verify your site by you adding a HTML code to your website. When this is applied you will start to see the information rite away. These tools will give you a quick and easy way of adding your site to Google.

4. Links. Getting good links that's connected to what you sell. This will be hard to start with, research local businesses that you think that will be relevant. Send the site owners an email and see if you can swap links. Having links to other websites will get your site higher on Google. When google does a search they'll find you through being added to other sites. Look on Google Maps for sites in your area and then get in contact.                                             Click below to read information on getting links

5. Forums: Sign in to forums and discuss, give advice on items you have knowledge about. Start your own forum topic and always remember to add your own business information at the foot of your topic. Give information on products that are relevant to your own. This will make you sound professional and will also get people interested in checking you out. When writing posts keep in mind that everyone who looks at your topic could be a future buyer.

6. Blogs - This one is easy and is also free. Think of a good topic and write a blog that is going to be interesting to your audience. You can add links on these to your own site, or have AdSence links added to earn money on Pay Per Click. This will allow the whole internet who is researching your topic to look at your blog. This can be effective in bringing visitors to your site. A blog allows you to discuss topics of interest with customers, this can then generate buyers sales.

7. Offline Advertising: I personally put a lot of time promoting offline because that suits my business type. Get some postcards, leaflets and business cards and start putting them up in local shops. Spend time putting through peoples post boxes, give leaflets to friends ask them to pass round work colleagues. Sell at local markets, see if you can set up stalls at Universities promote to students.

8. Email Marketing- You have to be careful here as a lot of companies can send to wrong market etc. I would phone any company who you are going to deal with and do some research and make sure they are reliable. This can be a great source for getting to click on your website.

Hopefully you have found this information usefull. If you want to ask any questions or have any further informtion please add for discussion.
