Many people suffer from acne, and some of these will be left with scars long after the acne has gone. For some people the scars make them self-conscious and reluctant to be seen in public, but there are several treatments available that can greatly improve the appearance of the scars and give that lost confidence back.

The choice of treatment for the acne scars depends on the type of scarring. In some cases the scarring will be very light discolouration and in others it will be deep depressions of the skin. Some of the available treatments are:

Laser Treatment

The laser can be used to burn off layers of skin to the required depth, or may be a large number of tiny pinpoints of light which intentionally cause damage to the skin but leave the areas surrounding the damage untouched to speed up healing.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels use chemicals applied to the affected areas of skin to remove the skin surface. The skin which regenerates has an improved appearance and this procedure can be used to treat acne scars ranging from discolouration or shallow depressions to deep acne scars.

The chemical used will depend on the type of scarring, with gentler peels such as AHA or glycolic acid being used for shallow scarring. Medium-depth scars will normally be treated with a medium-strength peel chemical such as TCA. Deep scars will require a strong peel chemical such as phenol.

Dermabrasion

The surface of the affected areas of skin are removed by abrasion with a special tool, and the skin appearance improves after healing. If you have dark skin, you may be better avoiding dermabrasion as it can cause permanent blotchiness or discolouration. It is really only suitable for people with lighter skin tones.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is similar in principle to dermabrasion, but is gentler and can be done at home using a Home Microdermabrasion System. Aluminium oxide crystals gently abrade the outer layer of skin. Microdermabrasion doesn't work well on deep scars.

Microdermabrasion Procedures

Subcision

Subcision, also known as subcutaneous incision, is a procedure which is used for sunken or depressed scars. The procedure uses a micro-needle to separate the scar from the tissue beneath. This allows the scar to rise and also allows blood to enter beneath the scar.

Biological Treatment

Biological treatment uses a topical cream made with snail mucin. When applied to the acne scars over a period of time, it is said to improve the appearance of the scars.
