How To Get Started In Theatre, 10 Tips That You Should Know
67
1. Memorize 2 - 4 monologues, classic and modern pieces. Please make sure the pieces are appropriate for you: age, look (height and weight), etc.
2. Read Plays! Head down to your local book shop and buy a handful of plays. I'd suggest a wide range of theatre so you can increase your knowledge, understanding, and appreciation.
3. Try a class: acting, dancing, voice, etc. They're fun... plus they're a great way to get involved and meet people in the theatre community.
4. Find an audition. Online is easy, try checking Backstage Pass or Craigslist.org. If you're looking for community theatre, try your local newspaper.
5. Auditioning: wear comfortable but flattering clothes. Wear your hair in a cute style that's off your face. Remember ½ your audition is based on your look. If it's a dance or musical theatre audition be prepared to dance/move. Bring water too!
6. Go audition. Be confident, friendly, and professional. * A director told me once that they dislike the audition process as much as potential cast members do. They (the director, stage manager) want you to be the one they're looking for so the auditions can be over with and the process can start.
7. If you get a call back, great, congrats! Go wow them again. If you don't get a call back that doesn't necessarily mean you haven't been cast so don't stress. It usually takes a couple weeks to hear, so be patient.
8. Just do it, be open, and say yes to options. As my crazy theatre professor used to say "Risk. Fail. Risk Again." Getting into theatre may not be an overnight thing but if you're willing and open it will happen.
9. Have fun, it's a called a play for a reason. Enjoy yourself.
10. If you're looking to get involved in theatre on the technical side (design, costumes, hair/make up, etc) find some local theatres and give them a call. Most theatre houses are always looking for volunteers.
