List of Web 2.0 Websites To Get More Traffic To Your Website, Blog Posts or HubPages

To make money online you must promote your websites and blog posts

As an Internet marketer you'll fast discover that in addition to having to write content you also have to get traffic. Whether you're writing hubs for HubPages or blog posts for your own website you'll find that getting more traffic is very tough!

It's important to be courageous in online marketing

A quick story here before I get into my hub. It's very important you read this because it can make the difference between making money here or not. A few years before I started making money online I was at my college roommates' house and met the father of one of the founders of Yahoo! - no joke! I remember he told me one thing key thing about his son. He said, "My son has big brass balls." Of course what he meant was that his son has guts.

How does this story apply to you? As an Internet marketer your goal is TO KNOCK THE OTHER GUY OFF OF THE FIRST PAGE OF GOOGLE. While that sounds cold-hearted the reality is that it's a competitive world and the only way to make money online is to get right up there on the search engine. Ultimately that means having the courage to knock the other guys off of the page. In order to do that you need LINKS coming up in the search.

It's my pleasure to provide you this list of sites for promoting your websites

Over the past year I have constantly been trying new ways of getting more traffic. When I first started out I was lucky enough to find a list of great Web 2.0 sites for getting traffic on a forum. I found it about three months into my online career. In this hub I'll share my master list of websites which I use to promote my own HubPages and blog posts. (In this hub I'll use the term website to refer to HubPages, blog posts and websites - they're all the same. They're pages on the Internet that you've created and control. You need them coming up in the search to make money.) As a contributor to HubPages this is kind of my gift to you! If I chanced on a list like this I would have made more money sooner! My list of Web 2.0 promotion sites is constantly changing with the Internet. Sometimes websites work great for getting traffic and some times they simply don't deliver any visitors. In this list I'll present the websites which have been consistent winners, websites that have been hit and miss but overall helpful and new ones that I've discovered recently. I'm sure there are many, many websites that I have yet to discover. If you have ANY suggestions that could help me get more traffic to my websites PLEASE let me know in the comments section.

Getting links is important for both page rank (PR) and getting traffic

Once you have completed your HubPage, blog post or even entire website for that matter you job is FAR from finished. You NEED other sites linking into your website. There are two main purposes for links: 1) Pages linking to your site which appear in the search engine results give you traffic and 2) Google judges the "legitimacy" of your website by the number of pages (hopefully relevant pages) linking into your site). Many people often talk about getting other webmasters to link into your site. In the real world this just isn't practical. To have links to your site you have to get (make) them yourself through website promotion. Make sure you find a good niche market to promote because website promotion takes a TON of time!

Getting traffic can be extremely time consuming

Before I get into my list let me say this: Website promotion is EXTREMELY time consuming. This is why you need to spend time finding a good niche to market. If you try to promote a) A niche that has very little to no search traffic or b) A niche that's too competitive (like polo shirts) you'll get extremely frustrated. So, as an Internet marketer it's up to you to find a niche that has enough search traffic but isn't too competitive yet!

You will muse MANY different kinds of websites for your website promotion

There are a number of kinds of sites I use to promote my websites, including a) My own sites which are already indexed, b) Comments on other blogs c) Social Bookmarking, e) Social Networking, f) Social Shopping, g) Classified Ads, h) Press releases, i) Question & Answer sites, i) Forums, j) video submission and k) RSS feed submission. You see - there are a LOT - and this challenge is TIME CONSUMING. So, please make sure your niche is worth pushing.

Link to your website from existing websites

If you've already been making money online for a while (even a few months) you should already have a few pages that are already indexed. (Indexed means comes up in the search results.) Go ahead and link to your new website from those pages. The search engines will crawl your already-indexed pages and find the links to your new website and eventually index it.

A quick note on the speed of your promotion

As an online market your job in website promotion is to link into your website from other sites. On day 1 just after your web page or site is complete just put in a few links. DO NOT move too fast. Just do 2-4 the first day and take it slow. On day 2 do 5-8 links. Day 3 do 10 - then build up from there. If you build links too fast the search engines won't like it and you'll hurt your chances of getting indexed.

Put comments on other blogs and websites

The next way you can promote your website is to write comments on other blogs and websites. Open your Google, Yahoo! and MSN (Bing!). Search your keywords. Open up the pages that come up. You'll find that many of them are blog posts and articles (like this one) which allow you to write comments and insert a link to your website. DO THIS. When you write your comments make sure to show respect to the article writer that you've actually read his post by mentioning something that he wrote in your comment! Otherwise it will be disregarded as SPAM!

Extra traffic - My special piggy-backing technique

I have a little bonus here for your about getting traffic with comments. I call this "piggy-backing". In addition to finding related websites and blogs in the search engines you might also consider searching your keywords in the big social bookmarking sites such as Digg.com, Mixx.com and Delicious.com. On the first two pages of each site you'll find lots more blogs that you can comment on. DO IT. These blog posts get TONS of traffic. But submitting good, relevant comments you'll get lots more traffic to your site. Again - NO SPAM COMMENTS (eg, hey mate, good article!).

Submit links to Social Bookmarking sites

As an online marketer you must submit links to social bookmarking sites. If you don't you'll miss out big time on getting traffic and what's called link juice (Google indexing and showing your site in the results because it has sites linking in). In the beginning I suggest to focus on strong social bookmarking sites which will do the job of getting you both traffic and link juice. To this end submit to Digg.com, Mixx.com and Oyax.com. There are 100s of social bookmarking sites. In the beginning just submit quality links to these sites.

Do not be overly promotion on social bookmarking sites!!!

Quick note here: Don't PUSH too hard for sales on the social bookmarking sites. If you're too 'commercial' you'll get your account banned! So, I suggest avoiding typing words such as Buy, Shop, Cheap, Discount, On Sale and X% Off. Just write our your keywords and the link should get indexed. Another tip for these sites: TREAD LIGHTLY. You literally have to tip-toe around these sites. If you spam them with 100 links from one single URL it will get banned instantly. Just submit your landing page URL and a few links from what you think will be your best performing pages from within your site.

Submit your links to social networking sites

Another GREAT way of getting traffic is submitting your links to social networking sites, such as HubPages.com. Submitting to social networking sites takes longer than social bookmarking sites because you have to submit an article (AH F**K - I HAVE TO WRITE AN ARTICLE?!?!?). Get over it and do it. You want to promote polo shirts? Just do it - 350 words on those oh so exciting polo shirts! So far HubPages is my FAVORITE social networking site - BY FAR. You may also consider submitting to: Squidoo.com, Zimbio.com and Quizilla.com. More recently I've discovered Xomba.com. Xomba is GREAT for getting indexed but watch out: If you're overly promotional they'll kick you right off.

Don't forget Twitter and Facebook

Twitter and Facebook are HUGE. In the past I've written about how to create FaceBook groups and how to add content to FaceBook groups. I have had mixed results with Twitter. A few months back I had a clothing website. I set up a Twitter account and got many visits to my site from there. But, after about three months the account was banned! My advice here regarding Twitter: If you're promoting a brand name product DO NOT use any of the brands logos or images as your Twitter screen background and just use one of the colors that they provide.

Submit to social shopping sites

The subject of using social shopping sites to promote your website gets very little attention. Social shopping sites are website that users can use to submit links to online stores. On the sites they make profiles and friends or fans just like her on HubPages. On these sites you'll submit your link and write a short 3-5 sentence review of the product. Again, do NOT be overly promotional here - just state the benefits of owning the product. So far I've had GREAT luck with Kaboodle.com. Recently I've discovered a new social shopping site called ILikeTotallyLoveIt.com. Another social shopping site which allows you to write reviews that works great for getting traffic is Yelp.com.

Submit links to classified Ad websites

Another great way of getting traffic is submitting links to classified ad websites. My favorite classified ads site by far is USfreeads.com. For $10 per month you can submit UNLIMITED classified ads to the site. And, they WELCOME links to sites with affiliate links. It totally works. Make sure your ad has a few lines of text. In a future hub I'll write about how to write good classifieds on USFreeads. I derive a very large part of my traffic from the site. Another great classifieds site is db88.com. It's based in Asia and you'll have to pick between Hong Kong, Singapore and a few other Asian countries. For every email account you get to submit two fr-ee classified ads. Db88.com is very strong and it has given me great results. Another classified ads sites worth considering are Oodle.com and Craigslist.org. Oodle has given me very mixed results. While Craigslist.org is strong they don't allow you to link to pages with affiliate links. And, I've had trouble getting my ads to show up on the site's search.

Submit to press release websites

One great way to get traffic to your website is by submitting to press release sites. While the idea of writing a press release seems very daunting I suggest to read about 15 press releases. By doing that you'll learn how to write one. Again, 350 words is fine. I have had EXCELLENT results with a site called PRlog.org. I have also had mixed but fairly acceptable results from a site called Information-Online.com. You may also consider Free-Press-Release.com (great results from there; $1 per press release) and 1888pressrelease.com (good results from them too but they must approve each release which is a bit of a hassle).

Submit to Q&A websites

One of the best and easiest way to get traffic is to simply go onto Answers.Yahoo.com and start answering questions then sticking in a link to your site. To find open questions that are relevant to your website click on "advanced search", type in your kewords and at the bottom choose "Open questions - best answer has not been chosen." Here you need to "shine" a bit. When answering questions DO NOT just stick in your link. Bang out about 5-7 lines of your best prose. Then stick in your link. That way you have a higher chance of getting chosen as Best Answer over the other guys who just answer, "try eBay." Another great site is Answers.com. The problem there though is that another member can edit and WIPE OUT your answer! You might also consider Yedda.com and Blurtit.com.

Submit to forums

Another great source for traffic is submitting to forums. I have not done a lot of submissions to forums. The biggest reason is because I don't like the way people bash each other (called flaming I believe in Internet speak) on forums. Another reason why I've stayed away from forums is that I find it as hassle to build up enough karma or points in order for them to let me post links. I do know that a quick sure-fire way to get a link into your site is by submitting to the 'review my site' section of forums.digitalpoint.com. I have not completely written off forums and do hope to promote more there in the future.

Submit to video sites

One great way to get traffic is by submitting to video sites. If you're camera-shy don't worry - you don't have to actually appear in the videos! One thing you can do is create a short 45-second video using Microsoft Movie Make (comes with all XP and Vista OS) to make a movie with about 7 still pictures. Stick in some music and say XYZ product 75% off at MyWebSite.com. Submit to YouTube, Yahoo! Video, Metacafe.com and DailyMotion.com. Note - One good idea is to modify your title, description and tags for each movie website. This way you won't have duplicate content problems. This also applies to your social bookmark submissions.

RSS feed submissions

Another important way to promote your website is RSS feed submissions. If you're using FireFox you'll see an orange RSS icon in your browser. That's your RSS feed. Click on it and you'll see your website's RSS come up. For starters here's where you can submit your RSS feeds: 1) Feedage.com (GREAT results), 2) MyYahoo!, My.MSN, My.AOL, iGoogle) and 3) Starter pages Pageflakes.com and NetVibes.com.

Parting words - Don't take things personally on the Internet

A few quick parting words here before I finish this hub. As an online market you must be very tough and thick-skinned. While you don't have to deal with a nasty boss as an online marketer you do have to deal with social bookmarking and other web 2.0 sites occasionally kicking you off as a spammer. Don't take it personally. People get kicked off all the time. Just come back with a different log in name and another URL to link to. The same goes with Google. If they de-index your site try not to get angry, stressed and take it personally. Again, people get de-indexed every day. Just come back under a new URL and keep banging away.

Use tools to help you promote your websites faster

As you can see from this hub website promotion is a very big subject and can take you hours, days and even WEEKS to do! Just think - all that time that you spend submitting links to web 2.0 sites you could be spending doing more value-added activity: Researching profitable niches to market. As I've mentioned in previous hubs - On HubPages I ONLY promote products which have INDEED HELPED ME TO MAKE MONEY and not promote garbage products. One product that you might want to consider is SENuke. It's a software that I use everyday in my website promotion which has saved me literally hundreds of hours and has gotten me lots of traffic. The thing I like about SENuke is that it covers many areas of website promotion: Social Bookmarking, Social Networking, RSS feed submission, video submission. With SENuke I can submit my links to over 20 social bookmarking websites, over 20 social networking website and article submission sites, over 20 video submission websites and almost 20 RSS feed submission sites in just a few minutes. If you consider buying the product through my affiliate link here I'd be happy to provide some tips on how to use it!

I hope this hub has helped you to find more ideas for getting traffic to your website. Believe me, making money online is not easy. But, with good guidance, some smarts and hard work you'll we well on your way to making a decent living from home.

Plaigarism notice: This Hub was the product my (Dawei888 on HubPages) own creative thoughts. If I catch you plaigarizing it on any other websites I'll immediately flag it and contant the site's administrator.

Dear CMHypno - My pleasure - I wish you all the very best!!!

Cindy - Right - Mixx has slammed the door on HubPages. One way to get around that is to bookmark from another URL which links into HP. Anyways, i have not had much luck w/them lately on my other sites. Point well taken. many thanks!!!

Great resource dawei888. This is all very important for promoting websites. I created an article directory called 411article.com to help out our hubber friends get backlinks for hubs they've created. I wrote more about it in my hub on getting backlinks.

Now we can't just copy the hub onto the site because that would create duplicate content but I created two categories specifically for HP Hubs and Squidoo Lenses where an author only need write a short 200 word complementary piece and link to their hub in the authors resource box. No fee of course. I also encourage publishers to link to the pieces in those categories.

I too am growing a list of sites that have high PR where we can place a link but these are more for promoting websites rather than artilces although I'm quite certain that promoting your HP profile will do wonders too. My sites are are all PR 6-9.

Your timely hub has produced more questions than comments for me. Here is what I read.

1. Digg and Stumble have no-follow attributes in the profile.

2. Article links coming from the ISP count as 1 even if you submit 100 articles.

3. Internal site linking has some link juice as well as helping spiders find pages.

4. More highly rated sites are applying the No-follow attribute to their comment module because google is starting to slightly penalize them.

I read more and more about this No-follow stuff and I guess the intention of these social sites is being diluted by webmasters just submitting a few lines for the backlink. I think internal linking and linking to other sites you own is pretty clear cut, but the puzzle of external is still unclear, as you stated it's time consuming and if your intention is link juice you don't want to waste time with a No-follow site. I'll check back for your response, set me straight, great subject and hub.

wow great hub, you have some good tips - i'd have to agree with you about u.s free ads they are a great source of traffic I too have a premium membership! A good forum i've found is website babble not too much b.s. as the other ones. The main thing about internet marketing is you def need balls of steel to eventually make a nice living down the road! Get through he bad days, find a profitable product, and promote, promote, promote, that's the key like you stated to be a successful affiliate marketer. Never give up, great hub thanks!

Hi Guys - WOW! Thanks for GREAT comments!

livewithrichard: Thanks! I'll go check out 411article.com now. Sounds like you also are very familiar with website promotion. I'll check out your hubs. And, if you can think of any key websites that should have been included in this hub please let me know!

ajm5050 - Yes, i know what you mean. Website promotion can be a real pain in the neck. It simply takes WAY too much time. that's why I use SEnuke.

rb11 - thanks very much! yes, i'm also aware that some social bookmarking sites are now stating that their links are no-follow. However, they're still good for getting traffic. All of the websites in SEnuke are do-follow. regarding you comment about 100 links from a single ISP counting for 1 - i think multiple links coming from a single URL only count for 1 in Google's algorithm. Recently I have done a lot more linking from within my sites. At the bottom of each page I write: "Check out these other great items!" then stick in links to related pages in my site. I've derived a lot more sales that way by hanging on to the visitors. I wish i did this in the past!!! also, if a site gets kicked off google but still comes up in the search on the social bookmarking & USfreeads links I now link all the pages up to a new site which is indexed. If my new site gets kicked off i'll simply make another new site and point both old sites to the new site.

joyorban - thanks for telling me about babble. i'll go have a look at it now. yes, one of key lessons that i've learned along the way is once you've found something that works just promote that like crazy and drop everything else till your run with the successful niche ends.

Many thanks to all of you for your kind comments!dawei888

...another great nugget of valuable information dawei, thanks. I think you should strongly consider 'forums' for traffic as you mentioned. I used just one and for the last month I'm getting traffic after just putting up one post: The post itself was actually a decent joke which got over 600views and over 100 replies, so people were clicking on my (signature) link for more. Facebook users who click on my site are a great traffic source because they usually tend to 'Share' my content with friends in their networks (there is a 'share' button/widget in my blog). Forums and Social networking sites like Facebook should definitely not be underestimated. Oh, and linkreferral is good for daily traffic (between 20-30) plus reviews of your website.

Well, I can't wait to try some of your other tips. Keep 'em coming!

Hi Tpri - Excellent - that's exactly what i was looking for - more ways to drive traffic. i'll give the forums a go. i know people get lots of in-links and traffic from there. also, i'll go check out linkreferra. thanks for that!

ricardo - yes, we must be very careful on forums and social networking sites not to be to pitchy for our websites and business opportunities - agreed!

Yahoo answers definitly works - though they ban HP from time to time - in which case I use a blog which I have to promote my hubs on.

Almost all the social stuff is a waste of time IMHO - you may get traffic - but are they buyers - almost never. Your best bet is always search engine traffic. To get that you need anchored backlinks.

ezinearticles are good because you get not just traffic but links as well - though they are woefully slow at approving articles at the moment

set up your own blogs and use those to promote your sites

Hello Lissie - Thanks so much for the kind comment! Regarding the social stuff - I use those to get those necessary anchored backlinks. the objective is to get the social stuff indexed, which is often hit and miss.

Yes, something that I forgot when writing this hub is setting up blogs to promote my hubpages then get links to the blog. I have created a free WordPress.com blog and linked it to one of my online stores and had EXCELLENT results. I'll try the same with blogger. So far I haven't done much with blogger though - seems harder to use than WP.

Thanks again, Lissie! dawei888

Great hub dawei888 and thank you, i am new to Hub pages & i am enjoying all posts.

I just want to add one more method of increasing one's blog traffic, through link exchanging programs. One of them is www.spottt.com, u need to signup and submit your banner or pic, with your url. In exchange u need to put a code given by spottt on ur website/blog. That’s it! ur banner will show up in websites registered with spottt, and they will show other site banner in your blog.

The only downside i see from this method is that u don’t have control over the links showing up on ur blog, and ur competitors links / banners may show up and take away some of ur traffic. Anyway, for a new site it’s a good way to start building links.

dawei888 profile image

dawei888  says:

hi there maxsrini - thanks so much for letting me know about spottt.com. i have been told that google looks down on link exchange program so that's why i've never tired that method. but, i really do appreciate your bringing this to my attention and i'll go have a look at the site. thanks! dawei888

Good information - I already knew that to be successful online, you need to spend 10% of your time writing and 90% promoting.  I haven't followed that advice because I find promotion $%%^&^& boring, and I can't be bothered - which is reflected in my earnings, unfortunately!

You mentioned some new sites here that I hadn't heard of.  I've heard several people say that links on Xomba are all no-follow these days, BTW.

dawei888 profile image

dawei888  says:

Marisa - I agree w/what you say: for Every 5 minutes spent writing content I was spending 30+ minutes promoting until i started using SEnuke. Regarding Xomba - thanks for the heads-up on the nofollow. However, i have found it to be EXTREMELY strong for SEO and they have a 50-50% split AdSense sharing program. Thanks again for your terrific comment, dawei888

Wow - a ton of information! Some I have done, some I haven't, some I can't quite seem to get a handle on lol...but I'm trying...will give the RSS feed a shot...so do I go to the site I want to submit it to and then click the icon (firefox user ;)) or do I click the icon, THEN go to the submission site? I have a redo/reuse site I would like to promote, no products...so is that how I would do it?

I have tons of questions LOL...but I won't inundate you with them now :) But I have def bookmarked this hub so I can reread it...thanks

SammyAdams - Great! Good luck and welcome to come back!

ManFromModesto - I'll check out your blogger blog. I have not had much luck with blogger but I know a lot of people are getting great results there.

Research Analyst - yes - i strongly suggest writing summaries of hubs - around 150-200 words is fine - then submit to xomba as a xombite. it will get u more traffic and u can make money on adsense clicks there tool. give it a go. just don't be overly promotional (using words buy, shop, discount) there as they'll kick u off for that.

Creaminizer23 - Thanks! i'll go check out your hubs now!

MissJamieD - thanks so much!

Entelle Lamb - Thanks so much for your comment. When u click on teh orange icon in your firefox browser that's your feed. for a wordpress blog it would look like http://www.mysite.com/feed/. That's what to submit to my.yahoo, my.msn, my.aol etc etc.

entelle - if u could type out your questions and submit to me that would be very useful. i'll see what i can answer & research what i can't answer.

Thanks everybody for your kind and insightlful comments!dawei888

Hi, this was a very helpful post. I have ben milling around social media marketing stuff for about 6 months 10 hrs a day, learning( what a rabbit hole!) and posting, have not made any money... only spent money. I am grateful there are a lot of free tools and places to post as you mention. While i am familiar with all the sites you mention , what I admire most about what you had to say is that it does take a lot of time and some money to learn fresh tips from the top gurus who make millions( off us desperate hopefuls lol), and a fair amount of skill to play in this game.

what you need to have is a list of avid followers who trust you to provide quality content. .. And you did just that!!

Good luck, my friend.

Yo Dave, Enjoyed the article and am finding that you are a man that is willing to help others like me in the IM biz. Wondered if you would mind answering a couple of questions? You said, "One good idea is to modify your title, description and tags for each movie website. This way you won't have duplicate content problems." I have been writing and have submitted to a couple of sites. There has been talk of how you're not supposed to submit the same article to many sites. Is duplicate content a potential problem? And if so what would one do to overcome it? Also, just tried to put up my first hub with a link to a blog and found I don't know how to do that here. Any advise would be welcome. Thanks, Dave Too

Hi DSmedia - I just think uploading the same video to too many video upload sites w/the same title, description tags and keywords could cause some dup content issues down the road. HP uses a standard WYSIWYG box like any other web 2.0 site - making links should be very easy to figure out.
