Most golfers that have trouble putting have one thing in common. They usually grip the putter exactly the same that they grip their other clubs. Such golfers typically use an overlapping grip or an interlocking grip. It is important that they realize that they need to hold the putter differently in order to become better at putting.

The Reverse Overlap Grip

Many amateur golfers and professional golfers prefer the "reverse overlap grip" when putting. This is viewed by many people as the best putting grip. The main benefit of this grip is that it will help keep the putter face square to the ark of your stroke. Also, the face will travel down through the target line. The following drill will help you to use the "reverse overlap grip".

1. Grab your putter and hold it upside down so that the club face is pointing up towards the sky. Using both hands, the grip should be right in front of your face, like holding a baseball bat before you swing.

If you hold the club this way, it will help you learn the correct set up for the "reverse overlap grip". If you grip the putter normally where the putter face is close to the ground, it will be difficult to adjust your hands to the proper set up.

2. Using your left hand, place it on the putter handle. Your thumb should be pointing down the shaft. Also, your index finger should not be making contact with the putter yet.

3. Next, take the fleshy part of your right hand and put it against the flat part of your grip. The thumbs should be pointing down. If you have followed these instructions correctly, all of your fingers with the exception of your left index finger should be properly wrapped around the handle of your putter.

4. The last step involves taking your right hand and sliding it down the club putter shaft until your left thumbnail is covered up. Both thumbs should be pointing straight down the shaft. Your index finger will overlap the fingers on your right hand.

If you learn to putt using the "reverse overlapping grip", you will see quick improvement. It is important to hold the putter using this grip because the overlapping and interlocking grip will cause unnecessary rotation of the clubface. Such putts will not come off the clubface the direction that you are aiming
