The cactus is a desert plant that gets along quite well during day periods. Its long roots spread out but close to the surface of the ground ready to soak up any rainwater that comes along.

What to do:

  • You can buy growing cacti at a nursery, florist shop or general store. You will have to move them to a larger pots as they grow.
  • To prepare the new posts, first mix equal parts of peat moss, leaf mold, and coarse sand (not from beaches.
  • Put a thin layer of pebbles in the bottom of the pot.
  • Then add the soil and carefully have the cactus to its new home.
  • You can also grow a new cactus from a cutting taken from a mature plant.
  • Prepare a pot as above.
  • Carefully cut a branch where it joints the stem of a mature cactus.
  • Place the cutting in the pot with the cut end buried in the soil.
  • Water it and put it in a warm, dry place.
  • Do not water it again until the soil dries out.
  • Roots will grow from the cut end.
