Growing Pineapple

I love Pineapple. It has to be one of the best fruits there are. Now most people just go down to the fruit and vegie market and buy there pineapple. However it is possible to grow your own pineapple it you are patient. This hub will teach you how to grow pineapple.

How To Grow Pineapple

Find a good pineapple. You are looking for one that is firm with green leaves. The skin of the fruit should be golden brown. Check that the pineapple is not overripe. You do this by pulling on the leaves. If they pop right off, the pineapple is too ripe for this purpose.

Next you need to cut off the crown and then strip some of the lower leaves so that the stem is exposed.

Now take the pineapple and turn it upside down. You need to let it dry for about a week so that the cut end and the leaf scars can harden.

Get glass of water and put the crown in it and leave until the roots start growing out. Make sure you change the water every few days. Keep it at an even temperature.

In a 6-inch pot plant the crown using light garden soil with a 30% blend of organic matter. Press the soil firmly around the base of the crown without getting any soil on the leaves.

Keep the moisture up to the plant but do not make it too wet. It should also be in a sunny, warm and humid place where the night temperatures won't drop below 65ºF (18ºC).

Water the soil lightly once a week.

During the summer the pineapple plant needs to be fertilized with half-strength fertilizer about twice a month

You need to be on the lookout for flowers. It could take several years so be patient, but eventually a red cone should appear followed by blue flowers and eventually a fruit. From here it will take about six months for the fruit to fully develop.
