How To Help The Retarded Children Get Learning
58Most people have a false idea about the "mental retardation"and they usually look at the retarded children as derogative children and they have no ability to receive any level of learning. Moreover, it isn't true to diagnose the "mental retardation" only depending on the IQ. But it should be diagnosed also by measuring the everyday performance of these children. The researches have proved that most of the retarded children are able to learn and they also can take care of themselves.
As a matter of fact, mental retardation is mainly defined by scientists as the condition of being unable to perform as a consequence of physical or mental unfitness which is a kind of disqualification not a disease. At the same time, there is no medication for such cases. Hence, when we provide the retarded children with the appropriate teaching, they can learn many things like the intelligent children. This can be done through the agencies and the programs which are designed only to help the retarded children acquire many of the basic life skills.
What is the main strategy which is suitable for that category of children? . Is it possible to gather them with the normal children or it will be better to isolate them and to specialize a number of classes for them. In fact, it isn’t the place, what we care about here, no doubt it is very important, but the main great idea here is the educational program, that would satisfy their needs, and their demands. It is the program that will be used to develop their abilities and their power to the most degree on the individual level, to be capable of learning. With the use of some programs, which were only designed for the retarded children, many experiments have been done. The results of these experiments revealed the possibility of transforming the retarded children from hopeless children into normal active children.
In relation to the social connection, we can say that, this idiom is going beyond its meaning, because it doesn’t only refer to the verbal message and the written message, but it also refers to the ability to express the inner feelings and thoughts. It also includes the ability to understand the received message whether it was for written or verbal messages. Hence, the program aims to enlarge the child's ability to grow personally and socially under the proper supervision. At the stage of understanding, these programs also help the child to grow emotionally.
In relation to the social behaviour at the retarded children, the main purpose of these programs, is to move from the usual to the unusual and from the unknown to the known. In addition, it includes moving from the activities that require the big muscles to the activities that require small muscles. Consequently, it is very important of the teacher and the parents to define the child’s level accurately, in order to get the most suitable program and deal with him through the perfect method, that should suit him.
