Not every puppy comes from responsible beginnings. For a shelter puppy that comes from a shelter or even a stray dog from unknown origins, your immediate attention to socialize with the new pet can help a lot. This is the time that could either make or break your pet. The way you deal with your puppy will determine his behavior and reaction to the outside world or even inside the house from the day you adopt it until it grows up.

You should keep in mind that no matter how old your puppy is, coming home with a stranger into a totally strange place is a scary experience for your puppy. You have to give him enough time to adapt before taking him anywhere else.

For puppies, the home soon becomes a wonderful, secure environment for beginning socialization. You can first train your dogs with the noises that can be usually heard at home like the television, radio, blender, and other appliances. You also have to allow your puppy to walk on different floorings like vinyl, tile, wood, and carpet. This would help you prepare your puppy for walking at the veterinarian’s office, pet supply store, friend’s homes, and more.

Socializing your puppy is entirely dependent on his attitude, behavior, and personality. Every puppy is an entirely different individual and each of them has to be socialized differently. It is important to study your new pet and note how he approaches unfamiliar objects and scenarios. For puppies that are bold and fearless, you have to learn how to redirect it to prevent him from jumping in head first. However, for a slightly timid or cautious youngster, you have to encourage him even in a perfectly safe situation.

Treating your puppy as a baby when it is hesitant will definitely not help. This is suggested specifically by professional trainers. Besides, your puppy will not learn to overcome these hesitations if you will not correct it. A good example is if your puppy dislikes vinyl. You can place a few pieces in or near his play area during supervised times. You can show not to mind at all when he steps on the vinyl. This would help him alleviate his concerns. You can also try to throw a favorite toy or treat onto the vinyl to allow foot contact of your puppy to the vinyl. This switches his concern from worrying about his steps to having fun. When you sit on the vinyl floor you also switch your dogs concern to you as your puppy will focus more on joining you on the vinyl floor.

It’s always important not to force your dog to doing something he doesn’t want. The previous examples were given as a non-force method in giving your puppy the time he needs to build his confidence in his own abilities. Flooding is the term for forcing your dog to confront and deal with something he is uncomfortable with.
