Do you have questions about housebreaking your puppy?

Here are some common questions that people ask when they want to know how to housebreak a puppy.

What is the best method to use when housebreaking a puppy?

That depends on your lifestyle and where you live. If you live in an upstairs apartment or if you can't get outside quickly, you may want to train your puppy using puppy pads. If you have easy access to get outside crate training would probably be right for you.

If you are patient and consistent it should only take a few weeks. Help your puppy to understand what you want from him and he will try his hardest to do it. Puppies naturally like to please you. They love to get praise from you.

Do I need to use a crate?

Puppies shouldn't have the run of the house at first. So it is best to use a crate when first housebreaking your puppy. Puppies feel more comfortable in small spaces. That is what they are used to and they feel more secure. An added bonus is that puppies usually won't mess where they sleep. Just make sure the crate is the right size because if it is too big, they will relieve themselves in one corner and sleep in the other corner.

How often should I take my puppy outside to relieve himself?

At first a lot. Actually, you should take your puppy out first thing in the morning when he wakes up, after he eats, after he drinks and after he wakes up from a nap. It is also a good idea to take him out before bed at night.

Should I punish him if he has an accident in the house?

No! He won't understand why you are punishing him. He will think it was bad to relieve himself, he won't understand the concept that he shouldn't have went in the house. Now if you catch him in the act, firmly say NO, then quickly take him outside to his spot. When he is finished praise him.

Why does my puppy have so many accidents in the house?

Either you aren't watching him closely enough or you are not taking him outside enough. Puppies can't hold it very long. As they get older they will have more control and you won't have to take them out as often.

What are some signs to watch for that my puppy may need to relieve himself?

As soon as he comes in, he potties anywhere. He has even crawled into our clothes basket and pooed on clothes and shoes. Why is he so head strong about going potty outside??? HELP!!!!!!!!!
