How To Learn Spanish Words

There's lots of ways to learn Spanish words from the high tech to the low tech and all sorts in between. It depends a lot on what works best for you so I've brought all the different useful methods for learning Spanish words all into one place.

Flash Cards

This is a classic method for learning Spanish words and its also one of the most effective. If you're a visual learner then try to use images instead of words. Although words are still effective a bright and colourful image will stick in your memory far easier than a black and white word.

For a great online flash card site try Quizlets - entirely free!

Sounds Like...

When you learn a word try to 'attach' it to another word or phrase with a similar sound. These are easiest when the word is similar to the English such as impreccion. But you can do this with many other words like "gato" (cat) which sounds a bit like the rich and elaborate cake - "gateau". Barry Farber gave me this idea in his great book about learning languages - now that's a great book for general tips on language learning!

Spanish Games

I've done a more detailed hub on learning with Spanish games so I'll just summarise a little here. General Spanish word games like word search, crosswords, scrabble and unscramble are scattered across the web in their thousands.
There's also a range of PC and Mac software you can get like Rocket Spanish (just as good as Rosetta but much cheaper!), Rosetta Stone (expensive) and BYKI.

Immersion

I know from personal experience that this method really works. Don't just do your class or Spanish language course then stop your learning. Make sure to immerse yourself in as many different bits of Spanish as you can. Listen to Spanish radio, watch Spanish TV, play word games, use flash cards. Find ways of learning Spanish beyond the normal and traditional that enables you to truly immerse yourself.

You don't have to understand every word you're hearing or seeing when immersing yourself. Your memory will be triggered almost subconciously by sounds and you'll become more familiar with time. Trust me on this one - in time it really works and it'll improve your speaking and writing too. Remember how babies learn to talk!

Learning Methods

Different people learn in different ways and if you want to find the best way to learn Spanish words you have to pick the method that works for you. People can be roughly split into audio and visual learners. The most common is visual but to find out what type of learner you are you can either take a number of free online tests or simply watch what you say. For example if you say: "I'll see you tomorrow" then you may be a visual learner. If you tend to say: "I'll speak to you tomorrow" then you may be an audio learner. Either way its often possible to determine your learning type by your language pattern.
Once you've found your language type concentrate on your Spanish learning using that method.

Any other tips or ideas?

I agree Immersion is by far the most fun and one of the better ways to learn a language.
