How To Make A Candy Cane Bookmark/Holiday Ornament
77
So do you like candy canes around the Christmas season? I love to decorate with candy canes and eat these too, but sometimes it is fun to make a cross stitch candy cane, which can be used either as a bookmark or an ornament. It is really easy to make this candy cane cross stitch piece and here are the supplies needed:
- A sheet of plastic canvas.
- A skein of red yarn (try to use leftovers from previous projects).
- A skein of white yarn (try to do the same as with the red yarn).
- A large tapestry needle.
- Cardstock for making the candy cane template.
- A pencil for drawing the candy cane template on the cardstock.
- A marker for tracing the candy cane template onto the plastic canvas
- Scissors for cutting the canvas, template, and yarn.
Step One: Sketch Out The Candy Cane Templae
I quickly sketched out the candy cane free hand, but you can trace any object that is shaped similar to a candy cane. Just remember you want to make the candy cane at least an inch wide because this is the template for a cross stitched piece.
Step Two: Cut Out The Candy Cane Template
Cut carefully and try to keep as much of the candy cane intact as possible.
Step Three: Trace The Candy Cane Template
Use a marker to trace the candy cane template onto the plastic canvas. Also, you could use the marker to draw a candy cane directly onto the plastic canvas to save time.
Step Four: Cut Out The Candy Cane Shape And Add The Red Rows Of Yarn
Use scissors to cut out the candy cane shape on the plastic canvas. Use the red yarn to cross stitch the first row of red. Each row of red is made up of three or four cross stitched rows of red yarn. To begin, make diagonal stitches across the plastic canvas from left to right, and repeat on the second row above going from right to left. On the third cross stitched row you will be going from left or right again, so by now you should be getting the idea. Repeat making each red row up the plastic canvas until all the red rows have been added to the candy cane.
Step Five: Add The White Rows Of Yarn
Once all the red yarn rows have been added to the candy cane, proceed to fill in the gaps on the plastic canvas with the white yarn. The gaps make up all of the white rows on the candy cane. Each row of red and white looks like the stripes we see on a real candy cane. Like a zebra, we must consider if a candy cane is really red, or if a candy cane is really white. An interesting question to ponder whilst cross stitching this candy cane.
Completed Candy Cane
The completed candy cane cross stitched piece can be used as a bookmark, a tree ornament, or even just be hung on the wall. Use your imagination and have fun decorating for Christmas with your fun handmade cross stitched candy cane. How many people can say they made a cute ornament all on their own?

Thanks for your sweet comments G-Ma. I can knit and crochet, but I really need to start practicing once again. I am sure you have made some wonderful knitted and crocheted blankets, sweaters, etc. Thanks for stopping by and commenting :).
This is so cute!!!
Thanks starrkissed!
I like this, I used to crochet, no time at all now, and certainly no patience. LOL I love homey things like this, tho!! very cute!
Marisue,
I will not lie, I worked on and off for two days last week on this thing, but I liked the end result. I still have a beautiful kleenex holder that I cross stitched back in eighth grade, but that is at my parents' house. Hopefully one day I will get it back. I am find the cross stitching relaxing and I definitely need to brush up on crochet and knitting, which I have also done in the past. I am now hanging the candy cane on the wall next to my Native American dream catchers, so I am happy I made it at least.
You have a great idea! Christmas is coming and i'm gonna make one! I really love your work. Send me if you have new ideas.
Betherickson,
If you want some extra ideas feel free to email me. Just look at my profile and you can email me this way. Thanks.
Hi Sweetie Pie, it must be nice to be able to cross stitch. :) I love this candy cane craft! :)
Michelle,
This project might actually even be easy enough for some of your preschoolers if you use big plastic needles. Plastic mesh has big holes, which makes it easy for little hands to do these type of projects :).
I think I better learn it first. Hehe I would like to link this hub in my blog. This is truly something cute to make. :)
You are welcome to link anything I do to your blog. I really should start doing what you are doing on your blog. You are doing a good deed for so many hubbers there!
I've linked it already. I believe the blog is coming alive because of all the nice things you all have written. Hehe :) So no problem at all. I enjoy doing it and that is what the blog is all about --to share joy. Thanks too for visiting that site. Take care..
You are very sweet to link to my hub ripplemaker. I always appreciate the little things you do :).
Hey, it's a great easy to do craft! Thanks for sharing as well as for the pictures!
This is a fun craft.
Hey there - long time, no hub for me. I really enjoyed this one! I love cross-stitch and needlepoint and voted in your poll. Cheers, Steph
Steph,
I love to cross stitch and use needle point, it is so much fun. I was really excited because the site crossstich4free.com linked to my hub back in November. This site has many examples of cute cross stitch ideas from across the web, so if you write about crossing stitching like to link to your articles. I cannot complain as this has given me some good traffic.
Very nicely done, pictures are excellent!
