In the early 1900's, black cherry bark was used in cough syrup. It was highly effecting and purged any toxins out of ones lungs. The government stepped when all herbs were to be taken out of medicines and government regulated in the US and black cherry bark was replaced with guaifenesin. People began to get angry due to the results not being the same and began to lobby to put the black cherry bark back into cough medicine. Shortly thereafter World War II began and thus the war was more important than an ingredient in a cough medicine.

Once the war was over the issue of cough medicine was forgotten and the manufacturers began changing flavors of cough medicine from cherry to grape, lemon, lime, etc.

Black cherry bark remains an available resource and making ones own cough serum is quite simple and can be quite effective.

It has been used by those with coughs, bronchitis, emphyzema, and a variety of other symptoms with great success.
