He worked for Lancashire kitchens and fireplace firm Petra Hellas until the day he helped shift a seven-foot granite worktop up a flight of stairs. "We had only gone up a couple of steps when my shoulder went pop," he recalls. "I was in agony but I couldn't let the granite go as it would have crushed me. We somehow got it upstairs and I just sat down. I couldn't lift my arm. "It was like someone had stuck a knitting needle in my shoulder. Then it ran down my arm. I have never known pain like it. "The doctor told me I had damaged the bicep ligament and I've been taking painkillers and having physio ever since. It hurts to this day." He's been forced to take lower paid light work and has had to sell his car to pay mounting debts. And he's been unable to claim a penny from his firm's insurers because they weren't paid and Petra Hellas has now ceased trading, leaving a string of County Court judgments behind. Trevor's lawyer Paul Mulderrig, who sits on the Law Society's Personal Injury Panel, says the problem has become more common as firms cut costs during the hard times. "In 20 years of practice I had never come across a case like this until recent months," he told us."Now I have three files involving firms where this has happened and my colleagues across the country are seeing a similar picture. "It is not just illegal, it leaves employees without cover if anything untoward happens to them at work." Before his accident 37-year-old Trevor from Bacup, Lancs, had worked for Petra Hellas for four years. They were good times for his Aston Martin-driving boss Tracey Ann Strudwick, also of Bacup, with holidays to the Maldives, Madagascar, Dubai, Kenya, Egypt and Prague in two fun-packed years. But Petra Hellas hit the skids and Tracey didn't renew her Employers' Liability Insurance Policy. We've tried to contact her but she hasn't replied - maybe she's enjoying yet another foreign jaunt. A Daily Mirror campaign would prevent people like Trevor being left without a penny. We are calling for a new Employers Liability Insurance Bureau which would provide a "fund of last resort", paid for by all insurers, to help workers who can't trace their firm's insurers. We're told Gordon Brown is "looking at this matter closely". Meanwhile Paul Mulderrig has this advice: "Check immediately that you are covered. By law all employers have a duty to have employers' liability insurance for their staff and they also have to have the up-to-date certificate on display in a place where you can see it."
