This recipe is the best and easiest I have found to date. Some recipes ask for yeast. I dont use it personally but you might want to. You can serve these with a curry dish. I actually enjoy making this bread and having them with shishkabobs. MMMMM really tasty. You will need about 7 minutes of prep time and about 5-6 minutes cooking time.

INGREDIENTS

6 cups white flour

1 tbsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 tsp sugar

1 1/2 cups warm water

1 egg, beaten

4 tsp melted ghee or oil

fresh cilantro sprigs, to garnish

Naan Bread Instructions

  • Sift the baking powder, sugar, flour and salt together in a large bowl. make a small well in the center.
  • Mix water and egg together and add to dry ingredients.
  • mix together until a heavy dough forms. Shape the dough in to a ball.
  • Soak a clean dish towel in hot water. Wring it out and use to cover bowl. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
  • Take dough and roll it out on a counter brushed with melted ghee or oil and flatten with a rolling pin.
  • Occasionally sprinkle the dough with ghee or oil and kneed in little by little until it's completely incorporated.
  • Shape dough in to 10 equal sized balls.

  • Resoke the dish towel in hot water and wring out again. Place over dough balls and let sit for 1 hour to rise.
  • Meanwhile put 1 or 2 cookie sheets or stoneware in the oven to preheat at 450 degrees.
  • Use a slightly greased rolling pin to roll the dough balls in to tear drop shapes about 3 mm or 1/8inch thick.
  • Add a little ghee or oil to cookie sheets or stoneware. arrange nanns on cook wear and bake for about 5-6 minutes.
  • They will appear golden brown and slightly puffy.
  • As you take out of oven brush with ghee or oil and serve immediately. garnish with cilantro.

Serving

You can change it up and add sesames or nigella seeds and just scatter over the dough before cooking. Give it a different flavor. Like I said earlier it goes great with a curry or pasta dish if you add a little garlic to the oil or ghee. Enjoy!!!!!!

  • Ask a Chef with Michael Smith: What's Inside his Vanilla Bottle?

Today we bring you the first installment of our Ask a Chef series with one of our most beloved chefs, Michael Smith, host of Chef at Home and Chef at Abroad. I caught with him recently when he was here promoting his new cookbook: The Best of Chef at Home. (Be sure to check out Elana's review). After our chat which included how he and Gordon Ramsay apprenticed under the legendary Roux brothers in London to how he opened a can of “maple whoop-ass” during his recent Iron Chef America competition, which will air sometime in the new year, I managed to squeeze in a few questions from you, my dear readers. Many of you wanted to know: What exactly is in the vanilla bottle we often see him using in Chef at Home? Watch the video below and find out. Michael (I'm pretty sure he won't mind me being on a first name basis) had a lot of fun answering your questions. Look for more Ask a Chef with Michael Smith over the next few weeks. He’s living proof you can be a nice guy and be a great chef. Ask a Chef is featured Tuesdays on Food for Thought. Disclaimer: This page and all comments are maintained and moderated by Foodtv.ca. • Question of the Week: Would You Buy Prepackaged Shredded Cheese?

This weed's question comes courtesy of Scotch Mommy who manages to juggle three kids and full-time work with fabulous flair. One of her secrets: pre-packaged shredded cheese! I can hear all you food lovers/gourmands groaning, myself included but then again I don’t have three kids. I have never bought prepackaged shredded cheese and I can’t see myself doing so any time soon. I don’t want to get all high and mighty about it but like the gentleman in the video below, I try to stay away from packaged foods as much as possible. (Mind you I bought packaged season laver (seaweed) this weekend. What can I say, my kid loves it with wild rice but I digress.)   Plus I like my cheese in big honkin’ blocks like the giant piece of Parmesan I bought at Costoco recently. So how about you? Where do you stand on prepackaged shredded cheese? Is the convenience worth the extra cost? If you buy it, what do you use it for? Please weigh in below.
