Knowing how to make a white sauce can add richness to dinner dishes. A simple white sauce can be used to top noodles. A white sauce that includes cheese makes a wonderful topper for vegetables such as broccoli.

This basic white sauce recipe can be used as is or with the variations below for a variety of delicious dinner dishes.


Basic White Sauce

  • Melt 2-3 tbsp. butter in a frying pan
  • When butter starts to bubble, add 2-3 tbsp. flour. Stir in with a whisk until smooth
  • Add 1-2 cups milk and continue simmering and whisking until thickened
  • Season with salt and pepper
  • Optional: adjust flavor by adding seasoned salt, onion powder and paprika

Adjust the liquid amounts above, depending on whether a thinner or thicker sauce is desired.

You can now use this white sauce in any recipe that calls for a white sauce or a cream base.

Make a basic white sauce and stir in 1 cup grated chedder cheese

Creamy White Sauce

For a wonderful rich sauce, use cream instead of milk.

Serving suggestions for Cream Sauce.

  • Ladle thick cream sauce over diced cooked potatoes, top with chopped chives and dill
  • Toss with linguine and top with Parmesan

Creamy White Sauce and Pasta

  1. Make creamy white sauce and keep warm
  2. Fry sliced chicken pieces until well cooked or use left over chicken pieces
  3. Add onions & mushrooms and fry until browned
  4. Stir in chopped spinach
  5. Combine creamy white sauce with cooked pasta noodles and add the other ingredients. Sprinkle with Parmesan.

Make white sauce and use 1 cup of cream or milk + 1 tin of chicken broth.

Tips for Perfect White Sauce

  • When adding milk of cream, always use a whisk so that sauce becomes smooth and lump-free.
  • Gently simmer your sauce and continue stirring to avoid sticking and burning.
