How To Paint A Shirt With Impressionistic Roses
78Here is an arts and crafts activity that will be loved by people of all ages. Using dimension paint for shirt painting is easy for kids because all they have to do is squeese the bottles and paint comes out. Painting with dimensional paint is similar to decorating a cake with frosting tips, so if you have done that you can do this. Some people prefer to iron on a special design paint over it exactly, which is something I did do for a Home Economics project in eighth grade. However, I have had a new shirt and some fabric painting sitting around for awhile, so I decided to try something quick and easy. Today I decided to make impressionistic roses with stems on my pink tank top. This is a fun project that allows you to be creative and just have fun. So get out your dimensional fabric paint and design a new shirt as a present for a friend, or find an old shirt with stains and cover these up!
Step One: Start With A Plain Shirt
For this project I used a plain pink t-shirt that I bought brand new over a year ago. However, you can also used old stained t-shirts that had once been destined for the refuse bin. The lovely thing about fabric paint is you can create a design to cover up all of those appauling stains on shirts you do not wear anymore, which means now you will have new pieces added to your wardrobe. This is a fun activity for kids that are prone to spill food on their clothes because it allows parents to recycle clothes rather than buying new outfits constantly. Painted flowers do a great job of covering up chocolate milk stains!
Step Two: Add The Pink Roses
Decorating a shirt with three dimensional paint is the same as decorating a cake with a frosting tips. I simply went around in a circle and made four pink impressionistic roses to start off my design. This was a very random painting and I decided to add things as I went along. It is fun to just act like a kid and paint your shirt randomly, which is something that us adults should really indulge in. You know when I was a kid I was always trying to act more grown up, and now that I am an adult I like to find simple and relaxing activities. Also, I plan on painting shirts when I hang out with my niece, so I decided to experiment to become reacquainted with this medium.
Step Three: Add The Blue Roses
In this step I used the blue fabric paint to randomly space out where I would put the blue roses. Of course these are impressionistic, so I just made a circular squiggly patterns to mimic the look of the real flowers. Roses are one of my favorite flowers, so I love clothing that reminds me of these heavenly delights. Make sure to stay within the dimensions of the cardboard inside the shirt, which will help to keep painting from seeping through to the back.
Step Four: Add The Yellow Roses
The fun thing about sparkly paint is that it adds even more dimension to puffy paint. The three dimensional paint already stands out on the shirt, but the iridescent sparkles help it to capture the light. The yellow was a bright and fun color to add to this shirt.
Step Five: Add The Purple Roses
In this step I have used the purple puffy paint to add roses to the unfilled spaces. Remember this is a random design, so I am basically just spreading out the roses and filling in the gaps as I go along.
Step Six: Add The White Roses
Fill in the rest of the unused space with the white fabric paint to create creamy colored roses. The iridescent look of the roses will capture the eye.
Step Seven: Add The Green Stems and Leaves
In this final step I am painting the stems and leaves on the roses. Some of the roses will be free floating, and others will be connected. Now your impressionist rose shirt is ready to wear. However, allow the paint to completely dry before wearing this shirt because you do not want to get paint all over. Also, make sure to following the laundering directions on the back of the paint box, which usually call for turning the shirt or other item of clothing inside out to wash. Grab a box of fabric paint and allow your imagination to run wild. The kids could even make dad his very own manly t-shirt for Father's Day.

Hi Gypsy,
Yes this is fun to try!
This looks quite easy to do and it turned out well, so well done!
Yet another thing to do on my ever growing list of crafty things to do!
My wife said it would be fun to do with the grandkids, but maybe not roses since they're boys.
So cute, Sweetie Pie. You sure have a lot of crafty ideas. Keep them coming, soon kids will be out of school, a great time to do this sort of thing with them.
Hmm. Maybe I could paint on a tie? :-)
Thanks for the idea. My grand daughter would really like doing this, she's so creative and loves arts and crafts.
waynet,
Painting with tipped fabric paint is really easy, so I am sure your kids would even like it.
Pete,
Boys can definitely make different designs with puffy paint because I do not think most of them would be excited about roses.
Dolores,
I do hope kids can paint and do other crafty things over the summer because it really is great for creativity.
Dink,
With fabric paint you can paint on a tie, a bag, or whatever you like. I am sure you will have some great ideas.
alekhouse,
I am sure she is very talented. It is good to hear so many people encourage their kids and grand children to create.
This is a great way to brighten up our slightly or greatly used clothing. I did something similar to this on a denima jacket and recently added some "bling bling" and it's lookin' good!! Not perfect, but definitely "me." LOL
great pics and good job of putting this together!!
looks easy and you put it so well together. Thanks
That is very clever....Easy to follow instructions too…Good job!
marisuewrites,
I am sure the jacket looks very cute. I have also painted a bag with these type of paints.
diana,
Thanks for reading and commenting.
Nancy,
Yes, it is very easy to do and not messy at all.
It's a nice thing to do. The art looks great on the shirt.
Have you reached the 30 hubs mark?
Hi Weblog,
Thanks for your nice comments. I do not think I have even come close to the thirty mark because I have been a little writer's blocky, and I am also writing on another site called the examiner.com. I am dividing my time between these sites and do not always have time to concentrate on the hubs like I should.
awesome hub. was a great read. nicely done.
Thank you Benz B
That's nice SP, I was just curious to ask that question. I can understand how you like your hubs to be of good quality. Keep it up!
hi weblog,
You are my friend, so I always enjoy your questions. Thanks for the nice comments :). I enjoy how you are always thoughtful towards everyone on Hubpages.
Hi SweetiePie, it's very cute. :-) great job!
Glad you enjoyed it Ripplemaker!
Great fun SweetiePie. This is a good one and step by step instructions...nice. Don't you just love the craft stuff? Best thing about the painted shirt is anyone can do it and then it can be worn. A good group project for clubs, friends and families. Thumbs up.
Hey Sweetie you do all these all on your own?? Hey that is cool. I remember sometimes back you teaching us how to make a greeting card on our own and now it is this. I think this is a better one. Why not turn it into a business idea?? Thought about it??
C.S.,
I do love how people can make shirts to wear themselves. This is my favorite part.
packepack,
I do all the crafts myself, but as for the business aspect that is a remote maybe. I enjoy writing about crafting on several websites, which to me is more of a reliable income than selling crafts. I tried it once and really did not sell much.
This is a great idea. Especially the tip about using it cover up stains when the rest of the shirt is in good condition.
Hi RGraf,
I think covering stains on a perfectly good shirt truely saves money.
really attractive and lots of fun.... great hub....
Glad you enjoyed it Brenda!
