How-To Paint Apartment Walls Without Painting the Walls
68This is a method that I came up with for a friend that has an apartment and wanted to have the walls a different color. Most apartment owners will not allow you to paint the walls or hang anything on the walls. I gave my friend this idea...
Measure the wall of the room in which you want to paint. I gave my friend a suggestion to only go halfway up the wall--like wainscotting is.
Get some 1x2's or furring strips. Make two sides-- the sides of the walls in the hieht that you want the wall to go up to. Then cut or place the bottom and top furring strips so that the sides fit snug against the sides of the wall. This way you will not have to use any screws or anythng to attach to the walls and no holes in the wall. This can all be taken down when you move or wild lke to change the color or pattern.. Use "L" brackets on all sides to stabilze the corners and make it square.
Go to the store and get a sheet set that you like that would look nice on your walls. Be creative and not only see the sheet for beds. Visualize what it would look like on your walls.
Staple the sheet on the back side of the furring strips the side that will be against the wall..-- Bottom right side first, then top left side--like you were putting the fitted sheet on your mattress. Now staple the Top Right side and make the sheet tight. Now staple the bottom Left Side and pull it tight. Slide the faux wall's bottom up against the wall and the floor that you measured this for. Now pull the top part up until it is snug against the wall. This should hold it in place. You can do more than one wall but start with this first then after this is up and against the wall you can measure the next wall while this part is up so that you get a true fit.
Other Suggestions:
Get white or off white sheets and make them like your canvas. You can paint scenery on them or anything that you wish.
Use the fitted sheet for another wall or cut smaller for accents like in a picture frame.. You can decoupage the material on things as accent pieces. The pillow cases can be used for window treatments, or they can be wrapped around accent pillows on your couch. Use your imagination.

Thank you.
Good advice LG. One thing you might mention is to be extra careful of damaging the walls in the corners. It is easy to push the strips so tight that it causes cracks in the corners.
Thank You Sir Dent
When I noted your title, "How to Paint Walls without Painting Walls", I thought, what a good idea to use colored lighting and rely on shadows to provide interest. But, no, the new color comes from a wall covering. Perhaps something like a tapestry modification.
However, perhaps my initial thought might be added to your wall covering idea to come up with some dramatic decor.
Budwood,
Can you just imagine al the things you could do in an apartment with this. You could even put it at the top of the walls and possibly on the ceiling. You could add those glow in the dark stencils for children's rooms and you could also do the entire wall by putting several furring strips or 1x2's together with braces. Do you realize how many patterns are on sheets? You could also use table cloths and fabric. The possibilites are endless and you can take it with you if you should ever leave!
You got your new computer yet LG?
I just sent you mail about it.
It's a Toshiba Satellite P300 Series Laptop.
Lucky for me my sheets stand up by themselves! Great idea!
