How To Play MKV Files On Playstation 3
83How to play MKV files on Playstation 3
Ok, so I'm constantly seeing forum posts all over the place where people are asking if they can play MKV files on their PS3 to be answered by "No". While this is not wrong, it's also not true, you can play MKV files on your PS3 and I will show you how to do this in this guide.
What you will need:
- An MKV file
- MKV2VOB
- A PS3 (duh!)
What MKV2VOB does is remux an MKV file with x264 video and AC3 audio into a VOB file which is playable on your Playstation 3. Before you ask...no, this will not result in the loss of quality because the audio or video are not touched. The streams are split and mixed into the VOB file.
So you've got your MKV file now and you are ready to start remixing it:
- First, you have to open MKV2VOB and select the file which you would like to work on and then select where you would like to save the finished file. When you have done this, click "Save".
- You will then have a dialog box pop up that asks if you want to enable automatic MPEG2 transcoding. It is recommended that you click "Yes".
- Another box will then pop up when you start the whole process. Do not close this box. Wait for it to complete what it is doing.
- When that box has closed, another box will open. Again, do not close or mess with this box. Wait for it to complete what it is doing.
- When that box has finished doing what it is doing, yet another box will open. Leave this alone and do not close it.
- When that box has closed the task is complete and you should be presented with a "Remuxing Complete" box.
You're probably thinking "Oh no, but my Playstation 3 can't store/play files with a size this large"..well, for some reason..it can!
I hope this guide is somewhat helpful for those who are not sure about how to play MKV files on their PS3.

There certainly is. You could use TVersity and then all you have to do is set it up, add the VOB file to TVersity's library and then search for media servers on your PS3. When your PS3 has picked up the TVersity server, you can navigate to your file and then just select Copy. If you need more in-depth instructions on this...give me a shout and i'll gladly help! Maybe even write a guide ;)
Hi There(thanks for Your info)
-i'm trying to put my 10GB file to an fat formatet externa drive, that I usually have connected to my PS3. The drive (fat) will not accept that large files.Guessing that is mission impossible...Is it only possible to use a media server to share files that size?
Sugguestions?
Have nice day!Mathias, Sweden
It would be possible to put the file on your external drive but you'd have to convert it from FAT to NTFS which is extremely easy to do. But if you don't want to do this, you could try doing what i said in the above comment and use TVersity. You could always also try Red Kawa File Server too :)
Nice job.. Well try this one out...
thanks for this, Now I'll be able to play my HDDVD versions of Planet Earth on the PS3!
Junkster - Wow, you will LOVE it...i watched Planet Earth on my PS3 in HD and it's seriously the only way to watch it! Simply breathtaking :)
Thanks for the great tip. I got the PS3 at launch and I've yet to use all the features that it has. I was stuck on finishing up Call of Duty 4 and haven't even dared to really explore the PS3 for all its got. Your hub just gave me that push to really get to know the system and maximize its use. Thanks!
Hi!Thanks for the programm i would like to know if its posible to put subs olso!if its not how can i convert the vob and put subs without loosing the resolution!!thanks again!!!
does this program convert 1080p video?
Im trying to convert Planet.Earth.01.From.Pole.To.Pole.2006.1080p.HDDVD.x264-AJP but when i try it i get the status error "could not parse mkv file!" do you know of a way tyo make these files work? because all of my planet earth files are like this. Thanks

Nice giude but more important how to paste sub to vob. Pls help !
I just searched around the net for ways to do this and the only thing i found was this:
http://www.softlookup.com/display.asp?id=10428
Couldn't you just add the subtitles to the MKV and then remux it?
After remux and convert to vob subtitles disappeared. Hmm i cant figure out this program from ur link to paste sub pernamently to vob.
Griffo, you made a comment that to copy a large file just format the drive on NTFS, I was under the impression that the PS3 DOES NOT recognize external drives on NTFS??? My 250GB Passport drive is not seen by the PS3, once i read the comment abou thte NTFS, I formatted it on Fat32 and now it shows up fine... Any tricks you have to do for the PS3 to recognize an NTFS drive? thanks for all the great info you have provided.
By the way, I just downloaded 2.0.4 which was released yesterday, and you actually don't need the tutorial you posted (which was great by the way) and they even added the option to include or exclude subtitles which someone had asked earlier.. here's the full list:
Added Always Encode Subtitles option. Added Load Subtitles from SRT option (put srt file in same folder as mkv with same name). Added Overscan Compensation option (if subtitles look cut off on your tv). Added more detailed descriptions for config options. Added various other small improvements. Fixed "Insufficient Disk Space" error where your decimal seperator of your OS is not a dot (some foreign windows versions). Fixed "Type mismatch" run time error for some people.
@Tha186um - Yeah, i had that problem with my Western Digital MyBook. That's why i now use TVersity to get it onto my PS3. Also, thanks for the heads up about a new release of the program!
Which output format? I tried mpg, didn't work.
Now mkv2vob work exellent I ve added subtitles without loosing quality (if it does i didnt see ;) and my mkv file after converting to vob from 8GB have 11 but with subtitles. Great job !!!
Anyone got subtitle in the vob? i don't have a srt file, they are embedded in the mkv.
For some reason when I convert mkv to vob, my ps3 won't find those files. However it will find the avi's and others.(even other unsupported) I've tried adding .mpg at the end and still no luck. Anyone have any suggestions?
Can I plug in my external harddrive on PS3 USB input and watch Hi-Def .mkv or any other movie files like .avi on my HD TV?
Well, Playstation homepage says that "I can." but I want your opinion before I buy this PS3.
Thanks.
JMC: If the external is plug-and-play and no drivers are needed...i can't see why not. You can also install a bigger hard disk into the PS3 extremely easy with the slot on the side :)
without adding subs, this tool is great
but with subs (srt-file) the output file is about double size of the original and I think the video-quality it going down ?!
any chance of a new version i which this is fixed Griffo ? Or am i doing something wrong ?
IS there anyway to keep the file from getting to big for a standard dvd5. It keeps going to about 4.8 gb so it cant fit.
Griffo i need help, i hav tveristy and put the file in vob and put it in the libary but when i go to my ps3 to find servers i cant find it. help !!!!!!!!!!!!!! needed

Maybe u have firewall on, i have norton firewall and when its on ps3 cant find tversity,mb thats the problem.
To be honest i dont know whats wrong i got lots and lots of hddvd files, my external hard drive wont allow me put files over 4gb on it, any chance i can get them on my hard drive, any other help is welcomed
John, what file system is your external using?
i am using the fat32
I was wondering if someone know how to load an ISO image from a USB flash drive to the PS3 so that way you can play PS1/x games without the cd,
BTW really nice guide I never thought about using a wirless server, I always had to convert video formats so this saves me loads of time
- John, that will be your problem...FAT32 will only allow files up to 4GB. You need to change the file system of the drive to NTFS. Just Google "FAT32 to NTFS" and you will find lots of guides. It's EXTREMELY easy :)
- Xeno3, i think there is a way to do that, but it involves opening it up and doing some soldering so it would no doubt void your warranty.
Griffo i did that but my ps3 wont reconize it now. I plug it in but it dosent come up on the screen
I checked it up and it says teh ps3 cant read nfts
I guess the only solution (instead of a media server) is to split the VOB and put it on your external with a file system that can be read by the PS3.
In fact i cant change it back now. without shelling out 60 quid. what a disaster
In fact my 500gb cant be retrieved, pity u didnt warm me griffo that its very hard to change back
No I don't mean modding the ps3 but like you know when you download a PSX game to the PS3, doesn't it download the ISO image to the PS3? or is it some other format of the game? I'm gonna attemp to see if there is anf "free" downloads from the Playstation store, but if someone already knows what format the games download in, I would really appreciate the info.
John: No idea why you've had problems...i change the file system of my hard drives all the time and have done so multiple times on single hard drives. It's just a simple command promt task. Partition Magic does it, too.
Exeno: I'm note entirely sure about that, but let me know if you find out :). I think it does download some sort of image to the PS3, but uses it's own boot loader or something to do it. I think that's what i read that Warhawk does.
Just used this program for the first time. It's very fast and easy. My question is why does the program split into 2 vob files. Also can I just burn them to a disk and play seamlessly on the PS3? Should I be converting into a different format <mpg. or mpg4>.
Griffo i bought my ps3 in the usa and would that make any differnece and can i used linux to change the file system and how did u change urs on ur ps3, thanks
John: Do you mean changing the file system on the PS3? If so...no, i don't do that as there is no need :)
Also, do you mean using Linux on the PS3? If so, yeah...you can use Linux and play .mkv files through it by using VLC media player. You won't need to do any remuxing, etc then.
BinaVision: It shouldn't leave you with 2 vobs, are you clicking yes when it says "Enable automatic MPEG2..."? Because if you read that carefully it mentions something about clicking no for split files.
Not sure about burning them...i can't see why not if it will fit. Because after all, if you use a program to convert from DivX to DVD, the files you have to burn are vob files :)
Awsome this program is sweet now i can download hi def movies and shows and watch em on ps3 cheers :)
one problem, when i convert from mkv to vob it doesnt get the whole movie it misses some anyone know why?
Hey Griffo,
I converted the movies using the MKV2VOB software...but when i plug in my external HD...the PS3 doesnt read it...when i plug in the my other HD, it works just fine...for the one that doesnt work...its NTSF format and the one that does, its FAT32...any suggestions?
Thx in advance
Mike,
PS3 doesnt read NTFS formats only fat or fat32
Hiya Griffo, been searching the damn sites for a week now since i got my first mkv file, past few days have been a nightmare with ps3 video9, which is just weird because it dosent do what its made to do. I dont get why people are useing TVersity, My laptom is automatically seen on my ps3 without any additional software, but it cant see mkv files or ewt. hopefully itl be able to see the vob file and let me stream. Will give it a go tonight and see how i get on. Il probly be back on here as i always seem to mess up, even with the simplest walkthroughs. cheers pal keep up the good work.
J0GEE
mkv2vob states error getting mkv info! any help greatly appreciated.
btw followed instructions to extract first still does not work what am I doing wrong?
thanks
Well gave it a go and never worked. but i think im doing something wrong because the boxes you say will pop up dnt. it jus converts and done. could you please list the configuration settings and what they should all be on pleae. i have version 2.1.0 thanks
Please? Anyone? Config settings for MKV2VOB?????
Hmm, I'm not sure J0GEE as I haven't used the latest one. I'll have a go with it and let you know how i get on :)
dont worry bout it mate, ive given up trying, installed so many different apps and non of which actually work. im happy with the quality i get. dont think its worth the hastle
is this available for MacOS X?
i have been using mkv2vob but every movie seems to be messed up afterwards as i watch it. there will be spurts where the playback is real fast. could this be a codec problem?
just reinstalled my codecs and i still have the same problem. the vob movie runs fine on my pc but when playing it on the ps3 via TVersity stream or copied to the ps3 hdd, it still skips around a little bit and has spurts of quick playback. any ideas?
I have mkv to vob v 2.1.2 (the latest version). I am trying to convert my Planet Earth videos but keep getting "could not parse mkv file". This version is supposed to fix this problem. My other mkv files work just fine. Can anybody help? Thx!
if you download windows media player 11 u can use that to stream your files onto your ps3 using media servers. from there u can highlight the selected file and hit triangle and hit copy. it will then copy any music, video, or pictures u want onto your ps3 hard drive. i just downloaded a HD version of transformers and it is flawless and very glad to have it saved on my ps3 hard drive
I have no question griffo...Just to say this is a cool hub and your answers are proving to be very helpful,,They should pay you extra!
;)
Hello i was also getting the "could not parse mkv file" error and no boxes come up. i am using vista was sondering if this could be the cause thanks
YOU ROCK! THANKS
Ok, here is my dilema: PS3 doesn't read NTFS hard. Fat32 doesn't support files larger than 4g. I have HD movies that are bigger than 4g. Is there a a way (beside streaming!) that I can hook up an external hard drive to PS3 and watch these movies?
griffo, the new version of the program requires a few configurations, can u give it a look and let us know what to choose?
hi griffo, youre doing a great job answering these questions,
my problem is that when i convert from mkv to ps3 it dosent get the whole movie it always misses out about 15 mins of play time, any ideas (the file size is 4.3gb, ive tried lots of mkv,s) thanks in advance
hey griffo ?
how do i get the file on a dvd to play in the player ps3?
the file said 4.3 gigs but it is 5 gigs
Hi all, sorry i have taken so long to reply to these questions/comments. I've been really busy with college work.
@MarioK - No, i don't think it is available for OS X, but i've seen people on about making it/converting it for it :)
@Red - Do you mean when trying to fast-forward or rewind it, etc? If so...that generally will make the movie go funny. I'm not sure why, but it doesn't really handle doing anything but playing/pausing well.
@rtargett - Have you tried using the new version (2.2.2)? If not, try that and then let me know...this new version sorted that problem out for me.
@Yuri - See above. Let me know how you get on.
@sunny - You can use file splitting in the latest version of MKV2VOB (v2.2.2) - this will allow you to choose the "FAT32" option.
@Jhoe - I'd say it's best to use the x264 codec option. It's slower and will therefore bring back less errors and is a better quality codec. Make sure you set the video transcoding option to 'Never', as this will result in quality loss if you do transcode. Output extension, i use vob, but i guess you could choose your own preference.
@Graeme - Have you got it set to split the files? If so, make sure you make it to never split them. Get back to me :)
@mikey1923 - Are you planning on copying the file from the DVD to the PS3? If so, with the latest version of MKV2VOB, you can also select the "FAT32" option in the file splitting box, this will then split the file into more than one, allowing it to fit on multiple disks, etc. Feel free to get back to me!
Hi, I have the same "Could not parse mkv file!" error. Tries to de- and remuxx the files but it didn't work... I'm using mkv2vob 2.2.2... Other files are doing just fine...
I woul be really happy, if someone could help me!
no i just want to play it on the dvd and keep it there or do i have to copy it to the hard drive. i want to put 1 movies per. disk not 2 disk
thanks for getting back Griffo
how do you get the TVersity to work and is it good or soso?
after i made the vob files i made a udf disc using nero burning rom but when i put it in the ps3 it says its a data disc and theres no tracks on it how can i play it straight off a dual layer disc because its only a 4.8gb file
What about 1080p?
@mikey1923 - TVersity is pretty good. I don't use it for streaming...just for copying files over. It's extremely easy to set up and all you have to do is go onto your PS3 and search for the media server. Not sure about all movies fitting on 1 disk, either. HD files are obviously great quality...which comes at a price in size! :)
@fee99 - Go to the disk on your PS3 and press triangle. You will then get the option to browse the disk and can copy it to your PS3.
@jim - 1080P has been supported by MKV2VOB since v1.3 in December 2007 :)
@Patrick - Have you tried different configuration settings, such as changing between the slow and fast way?
hey guy
i went to the search for media and it said no server
Did you click 'Start Sharing' under the 'Advanced' tab on TVersity?
yes and then i try to set up the media server on ps3 and it say i can fine it but i can get on the web on ps3 no pro.but it can't fine the media server.don't know .what do you think give it a kick or what...lol
How can i use subtitles in the movies? Does a separate srt file work or should i use some software to put the subtitles straight to the movie itself?
ive finally cracked it right........
convert mkv file so u get ur vob file use nero 8 and make a dvd data disc
burn it on the minimum setting (slowest) takes about 20 mins
you may have to use a dual layer disc.
now place it in ur ps3 and press triangle and copy this will take a while once done press play and enjoy
hey dude , i have run into some problems , i have 8gb mkv file in dvd-9 but when ever try to convert using the FAT-4gb option, it gives a message "insufficient disk space." will the file play on the ps3 if it is over 4gb..any solutions...thanks in advance..
@mikey - You got a Firewall? If so, make sure it is turned off or configured to allow TVersity. Another thing you can try...if you have a media server (Diff software) running, sometimes they can interfere so make sure only TVersity is on. As usual, let me know how you get on :)
@roger -You can use subtitles but i personally never have. This link/thread will help you out:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=131782
@fee99- Well done for getting it working...hope you're enjoying it :)
@spawnofwar1600 - Yes it will play on your PS3. The problem you are having i think is that the hard drive you are converting the file onto (in your computer) is FAT andwill not be able to store it to enable you to transfer it to your PS3.
but ive converted quite a few other mkv files using the FAT-32 option, its just with this file that it doesnt...
ive checked the file splitting" none", its working this way ...but its taking ages, its been 5 hours and still converting...
could it be that dvd-9 cant be converted to fat 32 using this software..
got it convereted finally.. to vob..
but i guess theres a serious loss of resolution.
off the ps3s hdd the file shows a bit rate of 7.8 mbps, this was 1080p file...
and the file size has decreased from 8.04 gb(mkv) to 7.4 gb..(vob)
is there any other way to play it on the ps3 without this loss in resolution?
i have been researching and actively looking into this topic and have come to the final conlusion of playing dvd's on your ps3-
1. use handbrake or a converting programs to copy your dvd into an .mkv format. make sure you use .264 encoding with ac-3 pass thru as your audio to keep the 5.1 surround sound.
2. open mkv2vob to transcode the movie file from above
3. now this step is a little tricky depending on what media you are storing your movies on.
a. for tversty users: do as the guide says
b. for external hard drive users: the trick is to set the destination for the .vob file to the external hard drive. this bypasses the 4-GB limit for fat32 systems. ps3's will only read only view fat32 external hard drives so formatting them to ntfs is completely useless.
4. lastly, plug in your drive to the ps3 and make sure it works.
hope this helps, if you have any questions - leave a post!
hey man it work when i shout down the fire wall but to copy it to the ps3 will take a year.so i said forget it thanks man for all the help .
Hey spawnofwar1600 I encountered the same problem but i found a program that can covert it into a 1080p/720p file....
http://dl.phazeddl.com/1011297/Allok_Video_to_PSP_
or the downdload link is http://rapidshare.com/files/68171839/alokconvertor
after u convert this to vob is it still in HD format?
@mikey1923 - Yeah, it does take a long time to transfer to your PS3. But it is bound to, they're of a huge size :)
@robby - Yeah, because it's technically not converting/transcoding. It's just remuxing it.
@RaPiDo/Sammster21 - Thanks for useful posts. I'd like to know how spawnofwar got on with that program, too.
Hi,Im having trouble using mkv2vob v2.2.3.I chose the .MKV file i want convert, and where i want it stored, i then click add file and it starts converting. it gets past extracting file, then it does something with the audio (AAC to AC3 1/3), but then i receive the error under the status column saying "BeSplit Crashed"...I've got no idea what im doing wrong. All Configuration is setup correctly, but for some reason its failing.I googled the error and got no answers. Are you able to help please Griffo? Also, Will subtitles still be useable on the file after remuxing?
Hey Griffo program looks Bril but im having trouble i have the new 2.2.3v. i am using a 40g ext drive. the mkv is on there and i have created a destination folder, its a 1080p of matrix. 7.94gb as mkv. 19 bg free on external. i get the 'could not parse mkv file'. i will be using a fat32 16gb flash to transfer as i cant get my external to work with ps3 any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

u have to pay for the software.. a freeware link would be so much better ,lol!.
im currently converting 720p donnie brasco bluray, does make any diff if i set the video quality to best?,
the software has only the option of 2 channel stereo for audio?, doesnt make sense..

spawnofwar1600/Griffo the .rar file comes with the .exe an the serial. Yeah you have to pay if you want a registered copy with your info. If you think about it, it is freeware because someone pay for it but they are sharing thier registration. All you have to do is register it with the name and serial that was provided in the text file. Make sure that your anti-virus blocks its (the programs) connection to the internet.
I had a 960x544 720p file that i converted with mkv2vob and I lost major resolution on it. This program still kept it's HD and it converted it to a 1280x720p 720p file. IT LOOK AWESOME.

Im sorry if this has been asked before but i didnt read every post quite yet, just thought i'd ask.
Does anyone know when the PS3 firmware will be upgrade to be able to read .mkv files and x264 codec? The coversion process Griffo explained is amazing but its a hassel to do for every file you want to watch. I was just curious if anyone followed up with future firmware releases or not.
Thanks.

@rapido...
what ur trying to say is if i have a 1080p mkv with a resolution of 1920x 800 , i can ehance it to 1920x 1080 ....
if this is true than pretty good execpt from the fact u only get 2 channel stereo ...thats a big bummer cos what HD without surround..
by the way the conversion is taking ages..i set video and audio both to best...
@Griffo
the program seems to be pretty good for enhancing video resolution.. but the conversion takes a hell of a time.. and it doesnt support 5.1..
mkvtovob does a decent job when u use the 4gb splitting up option.. it takes alot less time than the other programme..
Posted this link in www.surfurls.com
Nice posting Griffo....just been reading the replies and like most users I have a portable drive (Western Digital Passport 250gb) and if you want to get files larger than 4gb on there you can use Ubuntu, it's only windows that restricts the 4gb capicity. You might be able to get away with running Ubuntu in a virutalisation software (e.g. Innotek VIrtualBox, which is free) but I haven't tested this so I can't fully comfirm it. Hope this helps a few of you
I also have the "BeSplit Crashed" error. I converted and split one movie perfectly. Then I got this error and this is all I get. I even tried uninstalling/reinstalling, same thing. Can anyone help me out?
I used the software to change 5 movies I have in .mkv file. It worked on two of them but it will not work on the other 3. I keep getting a message saying: "BeSplit crashed". There is no help menu to go through so I have to ask here. They are all x264 HQ films. Any suggestions?
I watch these on TVersity by the way.
Many thanks.
@griffo
is there any way u can convert vobs from widesceern to 16:9 fullscreen
yes same apply for me, I could use mkv2vob but now Ill get the besplit crash during the 3 phase of the aac to ac3 conversation. I checked besplit page and tried to replace the besplit version with the beta one. didnt help. a pity

Hey guys! I found this program that converts mkv files to vob with AC3 audio. It's fast and you can modify the profiles and settings. All you have to do is install the patch and enjoy!
Awsome, now can you make the program for Linux?
And for some reason when i try to wine it on Linux it creates an instance of VNC, you might want yto look into that before someone thinks your trying to hack their comp

Hey guys! I found this program that converts mkv files to vob with AC3 audio. It's fast and you can modify the profiles and settings. All you have to do is install the patch and enjoy!
http://dl.phazeddl.com/1069335/OJOsoft_Total_Video
it sys control.dll file not found...cant patch it..
"it sys control.dll file not found...cant patch it.."
@ spawnofwar1600
You have to drag the patch to the program folder (the folder is "OJOsoft Total Video Converter") and then patch it. For example. c:program files/ojosoft/OJOsoft Total Video Converter. After you patch the .exe the program should work. I forgot to mention that there is no file splitting.....

DL the old Version (2.2.2) http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/v
:)
Hey RaPiDo,
Thanks for the advice, but when I install the program it does an automatic update for the latest version. any suggestions?
Thanks
I downloaded the older version as you said RaPiDo, and the process completes, but the finished file doesnt show up where ive selected the destination to be...Any idea's where the missing file could be?
@ griffo , im trying to covert a mkv to vob, but it keeps saying codec unrecognised mpeg2.. could any one explain this..thanks
@rapido
hey dude finally did get the ojo convertor installed..
i have a question, what settings do use to make sure that orignal bitrate and resolution is maintained...
cos i have 1080p mkv with 16mbps and the vob option supports upto only 8mbps and resoultion up to 720 x 528 or somthing... im confused...

@Doron - Have your anti-virus block the mkv2vob internet connection. If u don't you don't have that option, DL the v2.2.2, then disable the internet connection for the convertion time...
@ spawnofwar1600 - lol... yeah... this program does not really support 1080p files....
@Bizz - search your harddrive....
Lol thanks RaPiDo... It didnt show up in the same directory the selected file was in... so i changed the destination of the exported file and it shows up fine...
Only prob NOW is... theres no subtitles hardcoded to the mpg... i have "Always encode Subtitles" selected but it doesnt hardcode them to the video. how can i get it to hardcode?
Thanks!!
@bizz - what program u using?
RaPiDo - to play the mpeg? VLC. Ive tried WMP but it just freezes... When i check for subtitle options on the mpeg (as there are subtitle options with the .mkv file) there isnt any.
I've converted MKV file into AVI file and it works just fine in my PS3..but the subtitles (Hebrew - right to left) appeared in "Gibrish".
Anything?
Thanks
P.S
I've loaded and transcodec the an SRT file and it shows in "Gibrish" when i play it in my PS3.
Thanks
@bizz - i recommend CCCP : The Combined Community Codec Pack
@RaPiDo - But how would i play it on the PS3 with subtitles? as far as i know, CCCP codec cant be loaded onto the PS3...
@BIZZ - try this: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic348685.html
great advice very useful :D ill give it a go :D
JESUS H CHRIST there are some absolute beautys on here!! Ive never read so much half assed advice in my life. What a load of fu*kwits!!!
read this... THE PS3 CANNOT READ NTFS!!! MICROSOFT OWN COPYRIGHT TO THE NTFS FILE SYSTEM AND WONT ALLOW ANYONE ELSE TO USE IT!!!
Once you get the above message into your heads you can stop giving out dumbass advice about formatting hard drives and all that bollox!
now read this... get mkv2vob and convert the mkv files then get vob splitter and cut them down to a size just on or below 4GB. Once youve done this either burn the files to DVD's, put them on a USB stick (in fat32 format) or copy them to a USB hard drive (also in fat32 format)
Whichever media you use to store the VOB files on make sure you make a directory structure like this
MUSIC
PICTURE
PS3
VIDEO
and copy the VOB files into the VIDEO folder!!
There... no bull$hit, no pain!
Hi mate ... I was reading this thread of yours , and i got one question to ask to you ... In MKV2VOB when i choose my mkv file , and i click ADD FILE , it says this on Process Bar : Error getting mkv info! .... Can u elucidate me why is this happening ?
Thx ...
Why not just burn the vob to a DVDR as a data disk then play it :P theyre cheap to buy I do it this way and have no problems
Chris ... Maybe cause its no VOB .. Its MKV ... And thats what i´ve trying to do , converting MKV TO VOB without lossing quality ( it losses a little thing that u just dont notice ) ...
lol...
Why I can't see subtitles on my processed file ( mkv -> mpg2 ) ? I've rename *.srt idetical as movie file. Is *.srt code-limited ? ANSI ? UTF-8 ?... or I need to set anything ? thanks !
Thanks griffo! Worked for me!
Hi Griffo.
Exelent help answering all these questions. I was wondering
I started to run the file through Mkv2vob and it has been working for ever.
Like 4 hours and still transcoding the file. Is it suppose to take that long remuxing the file or have I done something wrong here?
Trying out Transformers 1080p and understand it´s a large file but anyway.
Thought this was something that would take like 15-20 minutes tops.
Well anyway. If you sense i´m doing it wrong. Tell me when you see the post
Peace !
Ok so once you would able to remux the .mkv file, what it would way too big to put burn it. What do you do then?
i wonder if u can burn the converted file that makes the mkv playable on the ps3 to a dvd disc and the ps3 able to read it?
Hey, thanks a lot for this guide! Just one question... is there a similar method for .ogm? I need to watch Gundam Wing on a TV, not a computer xD
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
@ KaLaPzE: Convert the MKV file to a VOB using mkv2vob. Once you have the VOB file, open Nero and select DVD-ROM UDF as your project. Go into the UDF setting, and make sure the file system is set to 2.5. Add the VOB and burn the DVD. Pop it into your PS3, and it should show up as a Data DVD. Browse to the DVD, choose the VOB, and press "X". This method work for me.
Now, I have a question..... I have an MKV files with AC3 audio that is just a hair too big to fit on a DVD9. Is there any way to re-encode the video file to be a tiny bit smaller so I can fit it on a single DVD9?
I have used MKVExtract to seperate the video and audio tracks on my hard drive... I just need a good program to re-encode the video (keeping the MKV file extension and retaining as much quailty as I can).
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
I regularly download 720p MKVs of my favourite shows and convert to .m2ts files using tsMuxer (http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html). M2ts files are the same format used by Blu-ray and this tool even allows you to create a blu-ray structured disk image that can be written to DVD-R and read by the PS3 (you must write in UDF 2.50 format using the latest ImgBurn). The file format also allows you to keep your AC3 (Dobly Digital 5.1 etc.) audio track within the file. When using the tool you must convert the H.264 level to 4.1 to keep the PS3 happy, but no re-encoding of either video or audio is done so it's very quick.
I use TwonkyVision media server (on a Linux machine) to stream these files, without transcoding, to my PS3 so filesize is not an issue for me, however if you intend to use physical media this could be a problem.
Message to the great expert xanderxine: If NTFS is copyrighted by Microsoft can you explain why Linux supports it?
trojanfoe, I was reading this thread and wanted to suggest the same thing as you. I also use TSMUXER to remux to M2ts format and stream it over the network to my PS3 from my NAS device Looks fantastic, but I'm struggling with the subtitles. I don't want to re-encode, but I'd like some subs....
Can someone post up thier configuration settings
I am not sure about the file splitting, the output file extension or the transcoding codec
I want to wactch my hi-def movies which are in mkv formate on my ps3, so i want the settings to match this
Thanks
Hi Griffo. Cool hub dude. So what you're saying is that I can convert a movie on my pc to MKV file format and then connect my harddrive (with that file on it) to my PS3 via USB and play it?
Thanks,
Dan ;-)
Blindfold: Sorry I don't ever use subtitles - I only watch English stuff. Recent builds of tsMuxer do seem have significant subtitle support though - does it not work?
Dan: no he's saying you have to convert the file to .VOB format before the PS3 can play it, but I would say convert it to .M2TS format instead.
I think I have found a fairly simple way of playing MKV files on your PS3, without having to switch them to a different format.
First: download the codecs found on this site (and not the ones from the tutorial):
then follow this tutorial, but do not download the codecs:
hi ebarnichta,
do the codecs on shark007 only work in vista? how do i play mkvs on xp?
thanks
Party,
Sorry, I probably should've specified that. But, as you probably already deduced, I am a vista user. So, for XP you can follow the how-to as is.
cool thanks
on all the MKV files I have it says "Unsupported Audio Codec: MPEG/L3" I can't find any MKV file that this will work with.
mudoggy: There are several reports of that error (try google) but I can see no answer to the problem. It's almost certainly a missing codec from your machine. Please try and install some codec packs and try again. I don't know if MPEG/L3 is the same as MP3, but I guess not as you should already have a codec for MP3 by default.
I have used the MKV2VOB application with mixed results; On short films - around 90 minutes it’s fine.On long films – over approx 1h 40 mins - the film plays and suddenly stops just short of the end, like the end is missing? It’s like the file has been cut at a certain point? I thought the PS could play a VOB of any size? Why does it effectively “cut” the end of the longer films? Anyone else have this? There’s really not many options to select on the program so I can’t see why it does this? I output the files to an 8GB mem stick by the way.
Hi guys, this program seems like a very valuable tool; however I am unable to get it to work. I am encountering the same problem as Mudoggy, but mine states, "Unsupported Audio Codec: Vorbis" Any help would be appreciated.
after reading this, I officially promote you to the HERO rank. CONGRATULATION! you're now my number 5th hero of all time.
Great howto.. while you're almost right you aren't completely. If the audio is DTS (which is super high quality) it will convert it to ac3 and half the quality.. 1500kbps to 640kbps. I've been keeping my originals that were coded with dts audio since hopefully in the long run the PS3 will accept dts encoding via mkv.. I'm not holding my breath thou.
I tried this method today to convert a feature length film, which looks great great in both the mkv and VOB form on my PC. The video source stated that it was a 1080p BluRay format, which my computer monitor supports.
The Problem I have is that it looks worse than a normal DiVX file when I watch it on my PS3 or my 360...extremely pixely. I know my TV only supports up to 1080i, so would this be my problem? I am not sure why it looks so much worse when I stream it through TVersity.
Griffo you saved my day! Thanks! You are now my hero!
Hi :)
I'm converting a movie as we speak but it doesnt take "a few minutes" but has been converting for over 2.5 hours...
Is this because i checked the subtitle option?
I'm converting MKV to VO/ Video transc = auto / Transcoding codec = MPEG-2
How come it takes such a long time instead of the proclaimed few minutes... ? :(
FYI : i'm converting John Rambo Bluray 720p

Hey is there anyway to convert avi files to mkv format?
Thank you sooo much, Griffo! I got my favorite movie, JUNO, in full HD running. I'm so happy now. I'm now set to download and watch movies on my PS3 wirelessly in HD. Mad props, my friend. <3
Hi, your method works great. In fact, I'm able to stream the vob files wirelessly using windows media server, if I rename the vob extension to either mp4 or avi (it shows "unsupported data" over the wireless network, if the files are not renamed.
This saves having to burn the vob to a DVD or using an external hard drive.
hay this is so good. It 110% works for me Thanks sooooo much.
after struggling with this program it does work. mkv to vob and then onto the ps3 via 2gb flash.
Thought I might note that I used my IPod as an external hard drive by putting the video directly onto the drive, then using the IPod to put the video on the PS3. You can get to it by highlighting the ipod on the ps3 and pressing the "Display All" option which will display the Ipod file structure. Might help people who don't have other options for putting something on their ps3
same problem as schluh here, it takes hell lot of time to convert...what should i do?
Great guide mate.A hint though - i did x264 for max quality. My file was already encoded in x264 but was in mkv.So it took about 10 minutes!
THANK YOU SO MUCH MATE.WITH PS3VIDEO9 IT WAS TAKING HOURS
Thanks man, it works fine.
If you install Ubuntu or PSUBUNTU then they come with Mplayer and VLC media player, where you should be able to play any audio/video formats. Goto http://psubuntu.com/ on how to install ubuntu on PS3. It supposed to be fast as the PS3 has a better GPU than most of the computers. Also I think you can take advantage of the HDMI. I didn't try it, but see no reason why it shouldn't work.
hey griffo! we love you!!! your guide is amazing! you should be like, a teacher ;)
You are a star Griffo! I have had an 8.5 gig waste of space sitting on my HD up until now. Thanks very much!
HI GUYS,
Managed to get large files (greater than 4gig) onto PS3 using HFS software
http://www.newfreedownloads.com/Internet/Server-To
I basically share the folder with my big vob files (which have been renamed to .mpg) in it from my pc, then go to PS3 and using its internet browser, i browse to my shared folder IP example http://192.168.1.14:80 (u get this address in HFS) which then connects to HFS, then i use Triangle button to save file to PS3.
the files are like ranging 10gig and over, however the are downloaded and saved on PS3, and theyplay no problems :)
hope the above helps you someone...
I was reading thru comments on mkv parase error, which i have with one file doesnt seem to be a way to fix that.. search continues..
I have a delima. Sometimes the conversion adds a about 5% to the file size, making some files too large to burn to a DVD. I tried watching an HD movie (streamed with TVersity) over the wireless network, but as you can imagine there was way too much studdering. I decided to hit triangle and copy the movie to the PS3 instead of watching. That took about as long as the movie was.
Since dual layer DVDs are $1 a piece I decided to get an 8gb thumb drive for the sole purpose of transfering similar movies. Then I find out PS3 can't read NTFS, and there for my thumb drive is useless for the stated purpose. My delima is I have a 5gb movie on my PS3. I deleted it on my HD. The back up utility will only back data up to a FAT32 drive. Is there any hope at all I'll be able to rip that movie from my PS3?
Great software BTW. One feature I would like added is either the ability to choose your file size splits or to create two even file sizes. With some movies if I choose 2gb I'll have three files and 4 gb I'll have to open the second file right at the climax with 10 minutes left in the movie.
Hi Folks.
This is a great program and it worked for me with the first file I converted.
Now, however, as soon as I try to acces any file created by mkv2vob which is either .mpg, .vob, or .avi with 'windows explorer' or 'windows media player', these programs crash.
No problems obviously with .mp4 or .m2ts.
If I rename an .mp4-file to .vob the explorer crashes as well.
Anyone with any ideas to solve this problem or what could cause it? What really drives me crazy is the fact that it worked with the first file I tried. I even streamed it to my PS3 using WMP.
I've tried several files with several different settings since but all resulted in the above.
Many thanks in advance
Regards
DocRod
Hi, me again.
While I was writing my previous post, I installed TVersity.
With this program, I am now able to stream the videos mkv2vob creates an which crash the 'windows explorer' without any problems.
However, I'd prefer to continue using WMP as I am more familiar with it, so any advice is still very welcome.
Regards
DocRod
Hi Gritto or others - I hope you are still around reading this page (you know, comment page)... Um, I am new to learning on how to convert from .MKV format into .AVI format - so I can use them to watch on my DVD Player which contains .XviD or DivX code and Playstation 3 console.
However, I am aware of the fact that my computer is THAT OLD(!)... I mean this is a 900 MHZ which contains 256MB and has a low-end video card - although, it BARELY handle HD quality while watching it on Media Classic Player and/or DivX Player. However, when I finally has mkvob2 (Sorry for the misspelling) software installed and when I attempt to open the file that I'd like to select in order for the conversion to take its place. Unfortunately, no file was shown. I mean ANY files... I was wondering about this... Why? I mean I usually download my favorite anime series/shows from Dattebayo.com- you know, Naruto Shippuden and Bleach. But both of these files which contains .mkv formats did not show or are being visible when selecting which file to convert.
I apologize for a lengthy comment/question/explanation. That is simply because I wanted you to know where I stand with this and where my computer stands on it, you know? So, any helpful advice or feedback will be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much.
Edit Note: I apologize if I used that term, "format"- but what I really meant was "files". I apologize. I an new to this and I wanted to learn everything as I can in order to master this matter. That's all.
Ur a very smart kid, i've used a couple of ur guides and they all worked great. Keep up the gr8 work.
Thanks... worked out great
I have converted my .mkv into .vob .mp4 and it just will not read on the ps3 I am using a 4gig flash stick, the ps3 reads the flash stick but shows no data on it. I have tried everything I can to get it to work.
If I convert into .avi it works no problem any idea's? should I just get dvd's and burn the files?
J did you press the triangle button to "view all files"?
Worked great!!! Thanks!
>> b. for external hard drive users: the trick is to set the destination for the .vob file to the >> external hard drive. this bypasses the 4-GB limit for fat32 systems.
anyone has tried this solution? it woked?
error getting mkv info.how to solve it??????????????
someone has to know
KIKO: Nice work. I hope this works. I am downloading to my PS3 now, and just hopes that it can contain this 4.5 GB file.
is there anyway to split the vob video so i can put it on dvd?, all this without losing quality
I successfully converted an anime MKV file, but I see no subtitles when I play it. Any help on that?
Great hub! Really very interesting.
Griffo, you are AWESOME!
Seriously... Thanks for the help.
Without you I would have probably put the .mkv file on an Ipod and try to copy it to my playstation from there only to figure out that it wouldn't play.
So thank you for the mkv2vob and the comment about TVersity. =)
doesnt work very well when you say click save there is no button to click save
Thanks a lot for this great guide - it worked perfectly in transferring over to my external FAT32 formatted HD... Pretty fast, too! So again, thanks for the guide - props!
Thanks Griffo
Excellent conversion tool, has done me proud so far.
However does anybody know how to get round the Fat32 4gb limit. Someone suggested building the vob on the external Fat32 and therefor it bypassed the 4gb limit. But this doesn't seem to be the case. While converting it gets to 3.99gb then just hangs!
At the moment I am using Tversity to transfer large .vob files to my 500gb PS3, only it keeps losing connection, very annoying when you have waited 2hrs to find it lost connection at 98%!!!! So what I want is another workaround to get large .vob files on to the PS3 HD. Anybody know how to do this another way thats more reliable?
Unsupported Audio Codec: A_AAC???????? help me please!!
Nope, "thanks" for the "great" idea of building the file directly on the FAT32 drive.. it just cuts off the file so whatever was left after the 4GB mark isn't there. Cost me most of my HD collection, too :(
every time i try to copy the video file to my ps3 i get an error code : 8003051E how do i get past this if i can.
Great tool Thanks. I'm curious about a minor point. Folks keep talking about the size issue as mkv source is expanded to VOB. My experience is this. I start with 1.5 GB MKV (avc1 video; a52 audio) and after conversion have a 1.6 GB VOB. Are others experiencing different expansion issues? Also, it doesn't matter if I select MGP or VOB; MPEG-2, XVID, or x264: the output file is identical size. Thanks again for writing this. Oh, and any format plays fine streamed to PS3 for me, using Twonkymedia
Just buy the bluray disc. no hassle. no problem. :)
I think this guide is lacking quite a bit to the version thats out there so this is what worked for me with the latest mpvtovob.
First select your file , then select the directoy to save to , then goto configuration , select avi for the file output , x264 for the codec , video transcoding automatic , file splitting none.
Then back to add file tab , then hit the add file button. A 1080p transcode of ironman took me like 5 minutes to complete....something people will wonder about. Nothing pops up it just converts and your ready.
Then goto windows media player , enable file sharing , then goto your ps3 , search for media server , it will say not accessed...back to your computer it will say allow access for this device. Say yes.
Then your in , goto the download directory and depending on your speeds. You can either play the file or copy to your system. You can also use a portable hd or a large usb flash drive to load your content direct to the ps3. Then tada...enjoy!
Quick hint to anyone making vobs that are over 4GB and trying to put them onto FAT drives, FAT file sizes are limited to 4GB so a 4.1GB and over file will not fit, so it needs to be split with a simple video splitter, say into 2, 2Gig-ish bits. i had to learn this the hard way right when i was trying to watch Pulp Fiction in HD! lol
Hi, Great program, I just have a couple of questions
1. Where is the cancel or pause button?
2. When i first encoded a MKV x264 that was 8GB it took about 20 minutes, now I try and encode a 4.1GB file and it took 8 hours with exactly the same settings, any ideas?
When you stream using TVersity over a wifi connection don't you compromise the signal? 1080P requires a big chunk of data to be transfered per sec.
I might be wrong. Anyone compared an actual bluray to an HD xvid to se what are the major diffrences in quality?
Nevertheless, great work and thanks for all the valuable information on here!!
hey Mike from 4 days ago
i too have the latest version and when i first found this situation, i did the mkv2vob deal, then found that i can't transfer it to my fat32 320gb WD passport drive (it came to me that way). so i thought there was a "lack of space" so i moved all my data off just to move the vob's.
well it didn't transfer because of the fat32 4gb thing (i have horton hears and ironman both over 4gb). so i formatted the drive to an NTFS, then transferred all my data back to it and the PS3 wouldn't recognize anything. (why that is no idea).
but i only bought the Portable HD EXCLUSIVELY for watching vids/ music transfer for my ps3, and because of that i HAVE TO have a fat32 file system. so i tried to redo the portable back to Fat32 to find it could only do 32gb. i partitioned four of them, and that too wouldn't view on the ps3. THANKFULLY, i found a site to do it back to fat32 for the whole 320gb so it worked out in the end... quite a gong show i can tell you.
however when i first started i thought it was brilliant because i have the Pixar Shorts in HD and they worked perfectly so i thought it would work for all of them...
anyways, if i enable file sharing via my WMP9, (where at??), where then does it say allow access to this device (ps3)? in the WMP9?
can i copy the vob's i've created through the WMP via the computer to my ps3? how does that work exactly? what does the WMP have to do with any of it?
if none of this works i'm going to just burn data from the computer to a DL DVD and then copy the data from that directly to the ps3. much quicker, but in the end a bit more expensive...
Hay i'm not sure if someone has already posted about this and if they have i am very sorry. Whats happening is when i got to convert Star Wars Ep1 it only gets a little of the way through say and 8th and then my whole pc crashes i've tired it two or three times now. No error pop up boxes or anything pc just complely shuts down. If anyone has a solution i would greatly appreiate your input cheers.
Using mkv2vob to convert a mkv file subtitles (srt-file). When it comes to step 3 (transcoding) my computer resets by itself after a couple of minutes. If I choose to not embed subtitles it works just fine.I have a fresh copy of Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit with the lastest hardware drivers. Can someone give me some ideas what to try next?
When I used wifi to stream 1080p content it did not work well (got choppy all the time). Over a wired connection it played without any problem.
Just wondering if Wifi N would make a diffrence over Wifi G, and how would I get a Wifi N adapter on the PS3?
I was hoping for a way to keep the file type *.mkv without converting it to another file type. Is there a way for the playstation to actually play the *.mkv file without a conversion or demux methods explained here?
i'm hoping for my ps3 to just accept an NTFS portable, so i can copy my large mkv-vob files on to it and play them
i was using tversity (last night i copied ironman from my laptop to my ps3), then an hour later it was dead, and has not reconnected. so i started using wmp11, but it doesn't accept vob's so the ps3 can't see them. so NOW, i'm going to just go to DL DVD's and copy data to them then copy them to the ps3.
if the ps3 just accepted an NTFS HD, all would work brilliantly. now, i'm stuck at a standstill.
Sierby: with tversity i dont copy to the ps3, you play from your server without the need to copy.
Format your external hd: search swissknife utilitie, can format whole hd to win32 format.
Hi all i was just wondering instead of converting from mkv 2 vob will i lose picture quality if i do mkv to mp4? ( i can stream thru wmp 11 instead of tversity). Also if i do blu ray mkv converts is the quality as good as a brought blu ray or very close?.Thanks.
John: sorry i took so long to get back to you; the problem is the latest version of Tversity died on me. it is "unable to connect to server" error every time i start it up. i'd rather copy over; my router is not very quick or very good, so having stuff directly on the ps3 HD works great for me.
but why would i format my external to win32 format? will it accept 4gb+ files then that the ps3 will read? if so then i don't need to worry about tversity or any other media server program actually working (wmp11 does not read ANY mkv or vob files so it's completely useless and i don't want to "recode" any of my data).
if only the ps3 actually accpeted .mkv or an NTFS external all would be good.
update: last night after offically giving up on the newest version of Tversity i D/L the oldest version, and it's working brilliantly. for those who have un/re installed the latest version and it doesn't work or the story about the flash program being a conflict or wmp11 being a media sharer at the same time - don't worry about it. take wmp 11 off as a sharer remove the new version of Tversity and install the oldest one. all will be fine.
withnaliluk:
it's better to just go the mkv2vob way, plus video9 takes forever to make an .mp4 AND after doing one myself i found that the mp4 was LARGER than my original mkv was. dont worry about pic quality either bluray mkv coverts compared to the bluray disc. you'll never notice the difference unless you are a visual guru and could possibly care that there is a difference to begin with. no one could ever see it.
Hey, I just grabbed version 2.2.4, and tried this for the very first time. (I'm tired of not being able to watch my animes because they're mkv files.) However, now matter what I do, the result is always "Muxxing failed." In some cases, the audio codec isn't reconised. This is all error reports in the program itself. I havn't gotten so far as to actually be able to port the files over to the PS3 yet. -_-
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Me again. I tried again with an english vlc file. This one worked, but generated a new question;
This file is the remastered Dragonball Z eps. It includes the original English voice acting (ew), the remastered Funimation voice acting (excellent), and the japanese cast. The programs has a massive list of languages to choose from for preferances, but if it can't find the prefered language, it will go to the first audio track (the 'ew' one). There's no means of selecting a specific track with the drop down menu, so I'm basicly stuck with the the native english tracks.
Is there a way to specify other audio tracks without using the language drop down menu?
(I still havn't figured out what I'm doing wrong in the previous post on top of this one. I can get the DBZ files to work, but not the others.)

PS3 does not read external HD with NTFS(
Read older postings above!!!
if you format a external hd with Fat32, files cannot be bigger than 2 GB
(read above)
With MKV2VOB you can split while converting from MKV to VOB.
Put the splitted vob files on HD, connect your HD to the PS3 and watch movies.
(read above also, everything you can find in older postings above)
gr
John
yes john i'm well aware the ps3 can't read an NTFS ext. HD. yes i'm also aware you can't put large files on the fat32 HD.
so instead you're saying i should SPLIT my file and watch part 1 then part 2? no thanks. using the old version of Tversity (the first one released), i can copy things directly to my PS3 HD w/o splitting anything.
i also have a 16GB flash drive on it's way that isn't formatted whatsoever; so i can copy from my D/L to it then plug it into my PS3 and copy that way w/o using Tversity whatsoever. i'm just using it for now until i can do that because it works (the first edition) better than the newest one or WMP11, which can't decode anything. it's a joke.
I use ConvertXtoDVD. I believe it does the same, or is there any change in the quality??
forget mkv2vob the program is slow and causes errors that it never tells you about it just says successfully complete when it really isnt sometimes.
after formatting your hard drive to be FAT32 create 4 folders called
Video Picture Audio Music this will make your external a clone to the internal ps3 hard drive to make things much easier
the easiest way to back up mkv HD files both 720p and 1080p is to have an external HD USB 2.0 formatted in FAT32 partition and to use the simple software called TSMUXER simply input the mkv file and make sure it shows H.264 as video type and AC3 640kb/s for the audio then hit output to M2TS muxing and set the split cut to 4 G/Bs for teh FAT32 file transfer.
if your movie is in DTS it will needs to be ran through TSMUXER output it the file to DEMUX to get the seperate files of the H.264 file and DTS audio file then run EACtoAC3 GUI and convert the DTS audio file you got from TSMUXER to 640kb/s DOLBY DIGITAL 6 CHANNEL
then reload the new AC3 audio file and the H.264 video file back into TSMUXER and set output to M2TS 4 G/B slpits of course works everytime on a dual core CPU no longer then 20 mins if DTS needs changing only 10 mins with original mkv is AC3 audio already.
no need to set L4.1 on video if you have the latest update for PS3 it now plays L5.1 video profile.
save all movies in sub folders under the main Video folder on the hard drive and press triangle and hit display all on your external when on the ps3 menu to video all sub folders for playback its so easy a monkey can do it.
for the record for people who dont know how FAT32 works on your hard drives
files can not big larger than 4 G/Bs to be saved on the drive most mkvs in 720p will split to 2 files 4 G/Bs and then a 2nd file less than 1 G/Bs some movies can even slide in under the 4 G/B limit
those doing 1080p most files will take 2 splits of 4 G/Bs unless the average Mbit video rate is higher than 9Mbits per frame then it will take 3 splits with such movies as BLACK HAWK DOWN, INCREDIBLE HULK, WALL-E, IRONMAN etc all in 1080p
playback with split files from an external hard drive on the ps3 is the easiest thing when part 1 is done it stops press circle to exit press down to get to part 2 press X done in 1 second you wont even mind the 1 second wait to pick up where you left off watching i have TB/S of storage holding my BLURAY and HDDVD collections and HD sony CAM 1080p clips
would never want to bother with streaming or wifi to your ps3
hijack5 i cant find EACtoAC3 GUI and btw its not so easy to do.
You guys are aware that the PS3 OS is based on linux right? Just format your "transfer" drive as linux ext2 and your file size issues go away.
Here's a link to an ext2 filesystem driver for windows XP/Vista 32bit/64Bit so you can read and write to ext2 drives with ease. http://www.fs-driver.org/
Hope that helps ease your pain a little...
evil89 you can get all you need from afterdawn forums on how to do it and it is just that easy its so easy my 65 yrs old dad can do it for me while im at work and he doesnt even know what windows means he just reads his opst it notes and follows the steps when i leave the computer on ahah crazy old man.
and yes ps3 is linux based but on certain models released for north american PS3 ext 2 and ext 3 linux drives are not detected ive tried no both of my ps3 and i have 2 different generations of the system i have the first release 60gb and the new 80 gb with only 2 usbs and not the usual 4 usbs found in previous 80gb ones
fat32 is the universal safe and proven way to work no problems
Great job, Griffo.
correction to my post:
files cannot be bigger than 4 gb
(personally i split in 2 gb files beacause in my experience the movies started quicker in 2gb part over 4gb parts.
You know, images are more useful if you can read the text.
I've just got the .vob file from Planet Earth and played on the PS3 but it only showed 11 minutes out of 51. Anyone knows what I am doing wrong? Thanks.
Nice but u can also use format factory lol
i tried , but it was not a successful attempt. The file size was More than 7gb and ntfs format was not detected by PS3. So I had use media server to play the files.
i dont know if it was answered already, it probably was. but to those who get the msg: could not parse .mkv file! it is because you probably have it open somewhere (wmp, vlc bittorrent, etc.) i had the same problem and it was pissing me off, but i figured it out. hopefully this helps the cause.
Hey Griffium, could you possibly throw some light into what would be the best combination of file extension and codec versus video/sound quality and playability???Anyway many thanks to the authors for a magical program …An option for file size split would also be great!
Works a treat cheers .Just make sure is 720 p and ac3 or dts .I just transfer the vob straight to a 8g flashcard with the fat 32 split.Works every time cheers griffo.
Hey man good job on your post, but you dont have to put the videos on my PS3 memory or any type of USB memory, flash card etc... You can just download a media server which lets you stream movies to your PS3. Such as WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, you can activate your media sharing from there by right clicking the library tap. Make sure media sharing is enabled on your PS3.
Once your streaming your HD movies you might experience a bit of lag since it is actually streaming a large file or so. If your network connection is strong it shouldn't be a problem whatsoever.
GOOD BYE TO BUYING BLU-RAYS!!!
Hey people,
can i plz have an advice?I don't understand how to add external subs to the m2ts file or to the vob file or to the mpg file that comes out after the proccess.I'll use either streaming or the external hard whatever will be easier to get this job done with.
@JunglistDub: I buy blurays which I think are really good or where you don't want to make compromises on quality. I just don't have money to buy everything I want. Never buying means people don't get money for making movies... @gever570: as far as I know you can't, you must hard-encode the subI finally found a solution for the "could not parse mkv file". Not what albertfromsd said, which I hoped would help me (check his tip though first). I had the problem with mkv-trailers I got from Tversity itself. So after allot of tryouts I thought I'd share this: first I had a problem with the audio because mkv2vob doesn't support Orgis so I used SUPER to recode the audio (mkv container, copy video stream (no recode), audio to AC3 48k 128kbps). This took only seconds since it's a simple audio recode. The audio problem was solved but I got the "could not parse". I then used TsMuxer to mux the new mkv into a ts file but with profile level 4.1 (it was 5.1). The end result was a file that mkv2vob could handle. If you don't want to recode anything (like adding hardcoded subs) then you can just use TsMuxer to mux directly into M2TS and that plays fine on PS3 aswell. Anyway, I don't know any technical stuff but this worked for me and though it seems like allot of steps, it's actually very simple and fast since no recoding is done.
I just use AVS Video Converter 6.2 to convert to mp4 (or wmv for 360).
1. Select your file.2. Select your output format.3. Copy or stream your output file to the PS3.
Easy.
@all
just stream your HD files >4 gb with your pc en mediaplayer 11. this is all you need after you coverterd from mkv.
Thanks for the help, dude!
hi everybody! Griffo thanks for the info!I'm new to this and I have a simple question:Is there a way to make a .vob file with dual audio (two audio strings, eng & spa) and the possibility of turning subtitles on and off. Most of my .mkv files have this caracteristics and it would be great to keep them that way...Thanks in advance!
Thank you Griffo this is just the program i need :D
thanks Griffo, I just downloaded mkv2vob and just figured out how to watch my first 720p of Dexter that I download on the PC but I can now watch on the bigscreen downstairs in comfort. For now im using a flash drive, problem was the ps3 i thought didnt see the vob file, but I found that if u press the triangle button on the ps3 controller it will show you all the vob file u thought it couldnt read but it does...Hope this help the people who think their ps3 cannot read vob....it can push triangle!
Hallo.
What about subtitles? how do you add subtitles to mkv file?
Hey,
Lots of great info here, just wondering if it's possible to play the converted .vob file (outputted by mkv2vob) straight from a burned DVD-R? Any help is appreciated.
Hi
To anser your question : Yes you can play the converted .vob file (outputted by mkv2vob) straight from a burned DVD-R? and if the output file is bigger than 4.7 Gb , you have to split it first during the transcode to .vob and watch it on 2 dvdrs .
Great info! This is just what I was looking for. One quick question though - i used mkv2vob and it made my 8gig MKV file into a 15 gig VOB file.. is there any way to reduce the size of the VOB without compromising quality? Thanks in advance!
this in probably the only way i'll be able to play my mkv files on the ps3, cause i can't find any conversion programs that'll actually work with mkv.
i have a problem though~~ i downloaded the mkv2vob but when i try to use it i get an error message saying that it's not a valid Win32 application.
what can i do to fix this... if it's fixable?
Thank´s GRIFFO!!!
works great. A true geneuis.
/ Swedens entire population... (me).
Has ayone heard any rumors about Sony adding native mkv support to the PS3 in the future? Remember when it first came out it didn't even support xvid... they seem to be pretty good at adding support for additional codecs in their firmware updates.
thanks 4 da info dude works like charm and no audio or video quality loss from my side
cheers mate!
All I get is "Unexpected Operation" no matter what I choose on configuration screen?
Please help
Another, easier, quicker, and user friendly option is just to use Super C. I have been using it for years, and it is 100% free, forever.
Check it out especially for conversions for systems. I used to use it all the time for my sony erikson cell phone (video conversion), as well as my PSP and now for Bluray on PS3...it is by far a quicker program than any i have tried out anywhere else.
Only thing I would suggest, is make sure you right click on the area where you drag and drop your source video, and select your output destination...otherwise you might have a prob finding where the finished encoded video is!

if I buy a usb blue rat dongle for my computer, will the pc wirelessly send data to my ps3? eliminating data storage device to play converted files on my ps3?
if I buy a usb blue ray dongle for my computer, will the pc wirelessly send data to my ps3? eliminating data storage device to play converted files on my ps3?
duh!!! figured it out TVersity!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have downloaded some movies in HD quality.. some of the movies are 8 gb.. i use tversity.. but when i load the movie it comes that data is corrupt.. the files is .mkv. how to stream them over to ps3.. didnt understand
Ive had that same prob. the big movies dont always play. Im gonna convert to the problem movies to .vob and see if ps3 likes that better. Ill try converting to .mpg if that doesnt work.
Ive noticed if you change the filing system in tversity from default to folder then to file will corrup and confuse tversity. delete the temp folder and delete the library and re-add your movies, It MIGHT fix the problem.
yep that did it. Most .mkv files play on the ps3 no problem but some dont. Those that do not just convert to .vob with mkv2vob then reupload to tversity youl be good to go!
u look like a twat
everything works great EXEPT: when on my computer (vista 32bit) i go to where the file was saved, explorer.exe shuts down... if im in the same folder as the file but actually looking at the file everything works, but when i scroll down to where the file is explorer.exe crashes...

thanks in advance Griffo
edit: when im in the folder NOT actually looking at the file it works, but when i scroll down to the file explorer.exe crashes
Ok i did everythign like I was supposed to and then when i play it back on my ps3 i see the video but I dont hear any audio. How can i fix this?
my sound was garbled , I eventually corrected this by uninstalling the ffdshow codec that comes with tversity. I re-installed my K-lite Codec and it plays fine now.
a lot of rubbish being spoken about here
forget mkvtovob, its ok but i found tsmuxer is much better.
these programs do not convert so there is no quality loss, they remux the container is all. 1080p etc will be fine, same res same quality.
as for external harddrive, what i do is have a 500gb fat32 drive with a video folder on it. I then remux my mkv files to m2ts format using tsmuxer, at the same time i use the option to split the file so that each segment is under 4gb this means they will be ok on a fat32 drive. i then copy the finished remux segments to the video folder on my external drive and they play fine in same quality as before.
its very easy
ps: tversity i got to work once but never again and it was a bit slow, id prefer on external and keep my pc alive at asame time.
PS: I can remux an 8gb mkv file to 2 4gb m2ts files in around 5mins
no long converting as it does not convert
Thanks for the guide. I installed the last version, and used it with the H264. I tried to watch the movie with ps3 but all i got is the first 4 seconds of the movie, while on the pc i can watch the entire movie but with slow motion or non synchronized. My ps3 is conected to the home network router and avi movies i can watch with no problem.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
You know if you have Vista you can just enable file sharing and put your videos in the Public Videos folder, then you dont have to run TVersity to run you media share, I persionally think TVersity is pretty ghetto and would mush rather just use Windows
Okay, so you are STILL not playing MKV files on the PS3, only reencoding them to another playable format. If you are going to do all of this, I would recommend DIVX, they play good, you dont lose quality, and the PS3 DOES support them, and they also keep and decent file size (around 700 MB per movie). DiVX converter now also converts from MKV files also to make it easier. SO, Dont tell people it will play these MKV files, because IT CANT, no matter what. But after you make the MKV into another playable format, it can, but it is no longer an MKV file.
DUH!!!!
Will this lesson the quality ?
Just stumbled across this guide.....worked brilliantly!
I used the fast encoding Mpeg and saw no loss in quality of video or audio.
Cheers!
Awesome stuffies dude. This worked brilliantly. Afro Samuri Ressurection on PS3 yeah!!! Thankyou....
I tryed it but it didn't work

hey everybody another workaround to getting files on the ps3 is to allow the ps3 to connect to your computer via ethernet cord, so say you have a computer with an external hard drive thats in ntfs format, hook up the external hard drive to the computer and then connect an ethernet cable from the pc to the ps3 , then enable the windows media library file sharing or tversity and also turn on the wired connection option on the ps3, once its detected you should be able to copy faster via the ethernet cord.
Nice guide Griffo, and good work keeping it alive!
@evil89 : hijack5 is correct on the fastest and most native method of processing the .MKV. He just stopped short of providing the actual links.

Good Info here, Thanks to all comments and this hub!
I have an old P4 2GB Dell Dimension 3000,I have an mkv file courtesy of utorrent that needed conversion to .VOB, it took minutes!!????? Could this be True?
Yes it was!!!!
I went nuts over the hours and headaches and troubleshooting, till i finally came across this site.
Now i Have 5.1 Audio, HD Quality Picture and Sound, in a stream from my PC with Tversity going to my PS3 or Xbox 360
The funny thing is my ol' computer cant even play the mkv file , since its so antiquated.
I almost gave up and was going to delete this mkv, file of 4.7gbs
But with Tversity installed on this antiquated PC , and the mkv to vob conversion it will stream HD audio, and Picture to my PS3 and Xbox thats hooked to my HDTV via HDMI.
AMAZING!!!!
If you have multiple PCs, and the bandwidth and network to spare , A Streaming Media Server like Tversity is your best bet.
(No burning to media, formatting of Hard drives to fat or fat 32),
Other Streamers I have Used:
I didn't like WPM 11 with Vista ,
I was fond of Windows media connect with XP since it was so simplistic ,
My Mac OS X Leopard hates everything, it wouldn't stream smoothly no matter what i used. TwonkyVison, Eye Connect. (VMfusion, Maybe Boot camp with Tversity installed on Virtual Windows would have worked, but seriously 100 's of steps and time)
Writing this comment took longer than converting mkv to VOB! lol
I recommend people check Routers and Firewalls if using Tversity. You may even have forward some ports. and allow Tversity through the firewall.
MKV to VOB:
This is going to be VERY addicting! So in turn my 1TB HD has 300 GB left, sounds like i need to get another TB external HD.
Have fun folks! and Thank You Again!!!
@ Windows explorer crashes:
The Combined Community Codec Pack does not play well with mkv2vob. Uninstalling this codec pack should resolve the issue some are having with windows explorer crashing. If using Vista, also be sure to disable video preview.
Worked beautifully. Thanks for the program advice (mkv2vob). Just converted this 'Fringe.S01E14.720p.HDTV.x264-CTU.mkv' in a space of a few moments and it is now playing perfectly on my ps3 through it's wireless connection using my laptop and WMP sharing.
thank you
First all the best for Griffo - he clarified the way to really use the PS3 for HD content.
But, my friends, if I have to convert all my 200 MKV movies in VOBs, I'll need an extra HDD + a lot of time... So I chose to buy a MKV player (TVIX, Popcornhour, etc... Time is money, sirs!
You don't have to buy an MKV player, just a thumb drive big enough to hold the output file.Just make sure you format it to FAT32.
Run MKV2VOB, point it to the source file, then specify the thumb drive as your destination directory.
Plug in the thumb drive to your PS3 then enjoy watching. Delete the file afterwards. You don't have to keep 2 separate files of the same movie.
Couldn't you just install Linux onto your PS3 and watch MKVs using like FLV Player with it?
can i add subtitle (srt file) to coverted file?
Its a shame i just sold my ps3 because its so useless since i have a pc.
Oh well...
Hey...to save some time reading all 43 million posts here :P HOW to i get 5.1 sound + the subs to work on my ps3?
I have used mkv2vob...but its no subs and its 2 chnl linear PCM sound :(
Mindtrust, I have yet to try this out as I am editing subs for my HD version of Kill Bill vol.1. But, I searched on that and am going to try this guy's answer in this thread. Well, the answer Roadhazard gave:
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/
If you beat me to trying it out, let me know how it goes. And I used mkv2vob too, so I don't know why you're getting the 2 channel sound unless your file has 2 ch. sound to start with. You should try to play it first and see what the codec info says. I use VLC media player to check my audio codec info. Hope this helps!
Thx for the sub thingy :) worx like a charm!
i found out the prob with mkv2vob,bit still, after downsampling to AC# sound, the ps3 says its 5.1 chanl sound, but it doesnt sound like it...atleast not REAL surround...i just want the homos to uptate the shit so it can handle MKV!!!!!!
btw...do u guys set any option for the mkv2vob prog? or just "add file" the way its set when u install? u have "transcode DTS" "PCM instead of AC3" and "DTS to AC3" "use 448 kbps AC3"...
and when u press "select" when playing a movie on ur ps3...what does it say in the upper line? Linear PCM? or Dolby Digital?
if it says dolby digital..i need your option selection...
thx :)
Thanks for posting up the help mate!!!!!!
Hey man, I convert a BluRay Fiel and the conversion worked great but the now the picture looks like it was stretched up, the quailty is great but everything seems pulled up and the characters look very tall...any ideas why this had happened?
Lidity,
it's because you changed the resolution of the file when you did that.. you took it from what ever it was orginally and changed it on the converstion.
Lidity,
it's because you changed the resolution of the file when you did that.. you took it from what ever it was orginally and changed it on the converstion.
Wats setting or mode should I put it on, mind giving me a quick run down?
Hey man thanks for the tips... it was very helpful. I formatted my HD to NTFS however, now my PS3 doesn't read the HD. Do you know what I should do?
Thanks in advance,
Grantor
sound and picture doesent match any tips?
if you like tversity then try this http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ im loving it plays files that tversity wont read works great im a big fan
Griff,
Sorry, i'm still totally confused. I need your help.
I've downloaded two blu ray films from mininova, Tropic Thunder and Taken. I also bought a 16gb usb card. My plan was to download the blu ray films, put them onto my usb and watch them on my PS3...
But, here's the beef... both downloaded torrents are folders. Half filled with rar files, half other files without extensions, just r30, r31, r32 etc as their extension.. what??
Secondly, I tried to use mk2vob and before I can even get to the moment when I 'add files' it says and i quote : "The temp folder cannot be located on a FAT32 formatted drive. mk2vob needs to be able to write files larger than 4GB to the temp folder".And I don't know how to get past this. I've also downloaded other programmes like Win FF, PS3 Video and AVS4YOU but none make sense.
What do I need to do?? Partition my hard drive so part is NTSC to be the temp folder? Download a different program? Is there simply a box to untick on mkv2vob? And do I need to first convert my blu ray files to MKV?
Help - much appreciated!
Nice - I love anything to do with hacking the PS3.
what are the best confirguration settings in mkv2vob for 1080 picture ans 5.1 sound?
i see several people having problems using ntfs file format on ext hdd's, the ps3 will only read/write to and from anything in Fat32, for those of you having problems formatting drives over 32gb here's a linkhttp://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32fo will explain how it's done i used this method to format my 40gb to fat 32 but will work for drives upto 2TBas for the mkv to vob guide Griffo, thanks looks good i'm off to try it now, the only thing i would mention in the begining of the guide is when you've just installed mkv2vob you get a small pop up to tell you to check the config/settings option are all correctshould we tweak them in anyway or just leave them all default after install
I just tryed all what the that guide explain and i also use Tversity. but when i play the file using Tversity and it frezzez in the start and the sound i get is only static. anyone know whats wrong? i got a wireless connection can this be the problem?
thx in advance
@Niclas;
Strange, I got the exact same problem you got at near enough the exact same time. I think I've found a fix, when you open MKV2VOB at the top right it has a small notice titled 'No Sound? Static? Click Here'. It gives a few things to try. Hope this helps.
I'm yet to try it, so don't blame me if it doesn't work, the video should finish transcoding any time soon though.
I have to disagree with loseless. Why does the video file go from 20-30+ Mbps to only about 4Mbps when using this method?
@ Dale
just tryed it didnt work for me but maybe for you :)
Well Griffo. The Playstation 3 doesnt recognize file systems other than FAT.
If the drive is formatted to NTFS, it will not read it. Its like if it never was there.......
Any thoughts? I wanna upload an 8 GB Blu-Ray file to my 250 gb hdd
It works perfectly in my PS3. Good job, but I have also a SONY blu-ray player BDP-S300, that starts to play the converted file, but stops after some minutes, I presume is due to this plaqyer only accept MPEG1, could you help me?
I've just downloaded mkv2vob and trying to convert a movie but the process ends within 2 seconds, it does however say complete. When I do check the file only the 1st second or so works....any ideas? please help!! Cheers!!
Any message of error, when has finish?
Nothing at all, it just says complete...it literally ends in two seconds after I press the add file button...
Hey I wrote this small article about converting various file types to make them playable on playstation 3. I used tsMuxeR for converting to m2ts from mkv. Also covers converting quicktime using yamb. Also included in the article is how to setup vista with IIS7 so that you can stream video to your playstation internet browser. As this method does not use DLNA or UPnP it does not suffer with streaming errors. http://phat-reaction.com/how-to-play-all-types-of- you find the web server setup interesting, as for me it's such a bonus to be able to play my content from my pc without having to copy to usb. The ablitiy to play video through the browser have been there since OS 2.20Regards
Andy
Hi, I got the solution for all of you. Just go download PS3 Media server. This program will allow you to play any kind of video without converting a single file on your ps3. Here is the link for latest version: http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/
OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG! IT WORKS!

FINALLY A PS3 MKV DTS Media Server!
thanks t0ny your the best ! :D
Dude...I love this...thank you for the software links and all of the info...Today is the first time I really started playing around with my PS3! This is totally awesome!!!
Very useful software. I have a Windows Home Server and I converted from MKV files to MPG and it worked perfect. I streamed it wirelessly to the PS3 and I had no issues with quality (sound and video). Thank you for the awesome post and thanks to Google for helping me find your post.
thank you so much DBZ here i come!
add me psn *tictacky*
hey guys i was wondering if someone could give me a run down on
http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/. do you install it onto the ps3 system? is it designed soley for streaming or is it possible to burn my tv shows on dvd and then play it on ps3 as a mkv format. lastly what would be the best method, should i take the time and convert my files into a esier to read format such as avi, divx? which format retians the best quality and works best on ps3. thanks james
Thanks alot for taking the time to write this. It is simple once you do it, but I never knew. Got lost HD now so its great.

Oh yeah, BSG season 4.5 in HD on my PS3 and 42 inch plasma..cheers !
My 60 Gig PS3 plays off both Fat32 and NTFS... Maybe the 60 gig PS3's rock even harder than ever yeah!

I've ran into a strange problem. No matter what options I choose when converting a file, when it is played on my PS3, the audio sounds like someone using the PS3's voice changer on the lowest setting and talking slowly. Any clue on how to correct that?
i have a problem for the side of the screen when look at my vids i cant see the sub title in normal view or full screen only in original , please help me out A.S.A.P!!
I wanna burn to disks, not stream, but when converting its always bigger than a normal DVD (not dual layered), any ideas on how to get the size down a little ??
And how long does it take to convert a mkv file?
Hey, guys?
Can the PS3 read NTFS??
:D
No mick ^, reformat to Fat32. Also, would convertxtodvd by VSO do the same only you get to create your own menus and it adds the subbs automatically, and has a preview window to see what it will look like. That is what I use for the better, bigger movies and just put them on a DvD5/DvD9(for hd) and it plays like a real dvd. Otherwise for the smaller .avi files I just use my WD Passport External HD and never have had a problem. So the answer would still be "No" you cannot play .mkv files on the PS3, unless you convert wich makes it not an .mkv file anymore.
Problem seems to work fine, but whenever i try to copy/paste new .mt2s file to thumb drive or external hard drive I get the message 'file is too large for destination'.
I have 500gigs avail. on my HD, so I know this is not the case...Anyone else encounter this issue?
TIA!
Why go through all that trouble? lol
Download and install PS3 Media Server. It will play anything your throw at it including rar and iso files with video files within. By far the best solutions. Give it a shot! http://rapidshare.com/files/237312598/pms-setup-wi
I see this is a good way to watch mkv's if you don't have a beefy enough computer that can handle the on-the-fly transcoding with PS3 Media Server. Don't get me wrong, PS3 Media Server is awesome! I have a dedicated server loaded with movies and TV shows. But it's an older P4 computer that can't handle the transcoding. I'm going to try this when I get home!
So basically you are saying "No, MKV cannot be played on the PS3... the format you encode your MKV file to can be played on the PS3."
dude how old are u 10? lol u look like a kid bro. anyway keep up tha great work kid genius!

Hey griffo, i tried this..but my ps3 says file corrupted :(
Sysgod - THANK YOU!!!
If you people are not running ps3 media server you should have your head checked. I knew there had to be an easier way. GREAT PROGRAM
You are a genious!!! :-D
nice tutorial dude
i have a question for you, Do you have Windows Media Player ???
if you do then you will never need TVersity, I dislike the way solutions to this problem and that problem is download this software and then that one .
I have heard of ppl getting Nero for the exact purpose of playing files across there wired/wireless network and now TVersity!
this is very easily done in windows media player,
1) Make sure the files are added to the library in WMP
2) click on the arrow under the tab - library
3) choose Share My Media - NOTE Network must be set to private as in when connecting to the network for the first time in Vista you are asked to choose the network is home or public etc this is easily changed in manage my wireless networks
4) tick share my media, leave window open for now
5) go to PS3, search for Media Servers
6) Back to PC and accept the new icon trying to access the content
7) PS3 can now access the content, Media server is set up
2 minutes with software you probably already have!!!! and ur not filling up ur PC with unnecessary programs
Also,
I have a 250gb HDD internal on ps3 (could have gotten more but chose to stick with what i need!) and i have a 500gb FAT filesystem external HDD It is not easy to do within windows Disk Management or Norton Partition Magic, they are restricted to a maximum of 160 gb-ish What i used was a program called GParted, which is open source and does not install on the HDD, It is bootable live cd that temporarily installs on ram to allow changing any HDD partition to what ever you like.
I do not believe you had gotten to play the Planet Earth through a media serveras it will not buffer correctly and freeze on a nearly constant basis(lacking RAM on PS3 being the probable cause, 256MB or 512MB only )also it is not possible to store a file larger than 4gb on a FAT partition (this is the official limit) and if you are using the full spec HD version of Planet Earth is upto 6 gb for some episodes and no smaller than 4.5gb so if you did get it to work on the ps3 it was a toned down version which is minimized by applying an averaging filter or blurring filter to reduce the complex pixels involved in HDand hence reducing the filesize but also the quality
My advice for films of high quality in mkv format is to not bother remuxxing (which can take anything from 2 to 6 hours depending on ur PC) and - since you must already have a HD TV to think of playing them on a PS3 - just stick the TV HDMI cable in the PC and setup multiple monitors, because remuxxing files is not worth it trust me
I hope you do not find this message any bit offensive i just felt i should point out a few things :)
Regards
Eric Curry
In case there are any mistakes above i apologise
this is all out from my head its been nearly a year and a half since i set this up
My PSN name is gnilsia if anyone ever needs advice on PS3 Y.L.O.D or partitioning HDD, installing bootable MAC on a Windows PC etc just ask
hey would this program work on my vista notebook?
man I just got lots of futurama episodes and they're all on .MKV..
I wonder if I burn a DVD, would the PS3 find and play the files?
I've ran into a strange problem. No matter what options I choose when converting a file, when it is played on my PS3, the audio sounds like someone using the PS3's voice changer on the lowest setting and talking slowly. Any clue on how to correct that? Somebody please help!
i remuxed a version of young frankenstein and the file completed at 4.70gb.
my usb drive can hold up to 8gb of space but when i try to copy the file to my usb drive it says that there is not enough space on the usb drive!
HELP!=(
nerex you need to transcode. If you use the ps3 media server and stream the movie you can use the codex in the Ps3 media server to transcode it. This always fixes the problem for me.
Also, does anyone have a quality issue when coverting from mkv to vob. The 720 rip has pixelation problems every few minutes which makes it almost unwatchable. Cheers
guys, converting 8gb mkv file to vob is a pain. i am using media server too. but hd movies of more than 4gb stutter. i have 802.11 g wifi. is there any settings to be changed to make these hd movies to run smooth.
if you use a program called macdrive it will format a hybrid drive to the ext3 format so that macs pcs ps3 and xboxs can read large files exactley as a fat or fat 32 does the only problem is that is you plug into another pc it will not see the drive without the software on it (only pc not mac)
ext3 is for unix based systems unless u use a Mac or Ubuntu i wouldnt bother converting to this File System. If your PC cannot read the FS how can it copy files to it on order to use it to play media.
Zodiac
The reason you cannot copy the file is stated in one of my previous comments Fat32 Filesystems do not allow transfer of files greater than 4 GB and PS3 will only read a Fat32 FS i believe. I would burn it to dvd if i were you it would be easier and anyone lookin to convert all these files they are very problematic and i see it as a waste of your time when you could just watch it on your hd tv from a PC
This is such a sham! I converted a video just now using MKV2VOB and i lost SO MUCH of my quality, its horrendous. the output was set to MPEG-2 tho, should i have changed it to x264?
abdul..- yea
Pulp Fiction mkv file converted to m2ts, works gorgeous, however cos the file is 6.5gb i cant put it onto my external hard drive cos its fat32. I changed the hard drive to NTFS but now find that ps3 doesnt read NTFS. How can i get this on to my ps3 cos when i do copy it to my hard drive i only get 4gb worth. It looks visually awesome on my ps3 but i dont have the last 45mins of the film. Any ideas. A friend of mine said maybe i should split the file in half, is that the only option
Davo and abdul if you had read my comments you would have caught my advice and saved you a lot of time I know you probably would have tried anyway but you would not have been so optimistic of successful HD conversion Trust me it would save a ot of time by just using the PC
eric101 i wanna watch it on my 42in plasma not a pc as i want others to watch it with me, i dont hav a lead to rig my laptop to the plasma. simple question, i want his file on my ps3 thats all i want to know. no other alternatives. many thanks
How long does it take to convert mkv. files to .vob using MKV2VOB program or any other recommended programs?
The reason I ask is that I have a lot of anime.... backed up for people ,500+ episodes, and a good chunk of the files are .mkv file type.
Suggestions?
Hey Griffo how's it going? I read your guide on how to play MKV files (or how to convert it and THEN play it) and it's awesome. Now I have some videos on TVersity and they work great but lag sometimes. I want to be able to put it on my usb flash and transfer it to my ps3 so I can have lag free movie. I have a 16 gig usb flash and the file I want to put on it is only about 5 gigs. When I try to put the file on the drive it says the file is too big and its only 5 gigs going on a 16 gig! I don't get it. Do you have any solutions? Thanks in advance! Rashad
Hi Griffo. I tried using your guide but i keep geting a sound problem. nothing but static. ?
What could be the problem ?
Thnx
You say to click "save"
all i see is add file
Hey people this software is fantastic - www.moovida.comIt arranges all your music, videos,Tv shows ect that are on your computer.
Adding the correct art work with a simple user interface with loads more to offer. Any yes it plays .MKV files :)Enjoy it !!
The best way to watch MKV files is using the PS3 media server. Downlaod from google code and BAM! Welcome to the 21st century - provided you have a gigabit home network.
Hi thanks for the guide I have a problem though. When I try to insert the file NOTHING HAPPENS! It doesn`t enter like it should! I also tried the SUPER converter and some other programs and they said that THE FILE CANNOT BE FOUND! WTF is going on? I can play the file normally on my PC. Please help someone!!!
i have tried reading the post so sorry if i ask an already answered question.
i get an "insufficient disc space" message when i try to convert a file.
i hav 10 gig available on d: where i have tho program an files, c: has 1 gig available but it should'nt be used right?
saw that earlier versions had trouble with other langages than english, i have norwegian, is it still a problem? how can i fix it? other than reinstalling with english language?
Anyone know how to stream mkv files to a ps3 from my mac/pc? I want to simply add it to a media server that transcodes it perfectly wit no converting rubbish
Myles, you can't stream MKV files to a PS3, it simply won't play them, you need to convert them, as discussed here
Argh, no edit. You can stream MKV files to a PS3 from a Mac\PC and transcode on the fly using PS3 Media Server. It might take some time to get the settings right, and you need a decent spec mahine and a wired network otherwise it will stutter over the wireless
the reason you all are getting "insufficient memory available" is because Fat filesystems are limited to reading only 4GB files maximum. Theres no point in converting the FS to NTFS as it will not be recognised by the PS3 i dunno what other FS it could read maybe ext3 or something but that requires a unix based PC to transfer the file onto the newly partitioned flash drive!!!
So in other words you will not get full HD that would normally exceed this 4GB limit, but a toned down version it takes too long and ruins the full hds experience by reducing both the filesize and and resolution. Most HD moivies now use DTS technology and i am not sure ps3 will support th avi files with dts sound again this would hinder the HD experience
Davo
In your case lacking the possibility of connecting your laptop to the plasma you have now alternative but to reduce the filesize so you can stream across the network or copy across by usb The file size limit for USB FAT drives is =~4GB you need to follow griffo's tutorial but note it can take a long time and sound may be problematic mkv to avi is more complex to do then is needed and reducing the filesize reduces quality of both audio and sound try as you may i wish you look as it can be hit or miss at times.
what hd movie are you looking to convert and i can test it out for you here and see if it works well and how i did it?
All MKV2VOB does is break my video files. I never get any sound, the program crashes on a regular basis, and 90% of the time the video doesn't even finish, it gets cut off at about ten minutes.
PS3 Media Server DOES stream mkv files off your computer. U will need a pretty good machine and a good router cuz it transcodes it as you watch.
Griffo's suggestions are very good. Take note of the the summary below:
1. PS3 will only see FAT32 ext. drives (Not NTFS)
2. Movies larger than 4GB will not work on FAT32 drives
3. ***To watch large VOB files without splitting you must use your network***
There are several Media Servers available. Griffo likes TVersity. The easiest (NON-transcoding) Media Server is built in to Vista called Windows Media Player 11 (or WMP11). There are drawbacks to using a Non-Transcoding Media server so read comments below. My personal favorite is ORB. Take a look and comments are welcome. This is also on the playstation message boards here:

---Media Server Comments (I really have thoroughly tried them all)--
The PS3 is a bit finnicky about what it will play natively and what it won't, and this is why many of us on this forum have to use other media servers in addition to or instead of WMP11. You can do 2 things here: 1. keep messing with conversions to various formats (MPEG2 always works) and risk losing some quality or 2. Load up a 3rd party Media Server that will transcode for you. As long as the file plays on your PC, most of these Media Servers will stream them fine to your PS3.
Because the PS3 is so finnicky, I would start with one of the freeware Media Servers that transcodes files first. I posted this message back in December, so I have heard that some version changes may have helped things along, but I am an ORB fanatic, so that would be my first suggestion:
I have posted this before about Nero's shortcomings, but I think it should be posted again. I have tried several of the freeware Media Servers (TVersity & TWonky) along with Nero and WMP, and I have to say that I was the least impressed with NERO.
NERO MediaHome--
I called their tech support (this was 6 months ago), and yelled at them about why Nero Mediahome doesn't allow viewing/searching for files by using File Folders. This is ridiculous, because that is how my files (and I bet your files) are all stored! It was also very touchy about some files, and it's transcoding worked sometimes after long delays. Rated 1 out of 5
Twonky--
I couldn't ever seem to get the hang of Twonky. I'm fairly technical, but Twonky requires some command line stuff to get it to see MP4 files. I'm sure it works great if you feel like messing around with cutting and pasting code. Rated 2 out of 5
TVersity--
This is actually a nice program, and I have it running on an XP box, simply because XP didn't have WMP11. Easy to set-up, it transcodes on the fly (plays non-native PS3 format movies by "transcoding" them while it reads them). It also offers access to your files through the Windows Folder System. The only con is that sometimes it is a little slow picking up new file additions to your library. It basically dumps the current library then creates a new one. Rated 4 out of 5
WMP--
This is the Media Server I use for 90% of my files. It is super easy to set up and it comes ready to use in Vista with almost no setup. The only con is that it doesn't transcode, so if you have some files that the PS3 won't play natively then THIS WILL NOT WORK for you 100% of the time. Rated 4 out of 5.
ORB (www.ORB.com)--
This is the best program since sliced bread! I just discovered this about 2 months ago (unfortunately at the end of Football season, I'll tell why in a minute). Anything your computer will play, ORB will play. ORB creates a Weblink to your Media files (that you give it access to), and streams them (Pics, Music & Movies) to ANY device with web access (other computers, Wii, PS3, and even my Blackberry). It also shows up as a Media Server on my PS3 through my home network without having to use the PS3 web browser so it streams all your media on the local network instead of through the web. This just means that the content will be at a higher bit-rate and of better quality. I use ORB to play anything that WMP doesn't play, but it will work great if you don'y use WMP or just want a single program to play 100% of your files. ORB is rated 5 out of 5
Other ORB coolness--
The coolest thing about ORB in addition to what I mentioned above is that it streams media to ANY Web portal. So if you happen to have a TV Tuner set up on the PC where ORB is set up, Wallah, you can watch your TV stations on ANY web portal (like my Blackberry). It gives whole new meaning to going to Church on Sundays during Football season. It creates kind of a Slingbox system for free. ORB sets up the entire TV Tuner experience with a couple of clicks. It is very easyto set up and it is 100% free.
Good luck!

Hi all, i tried to convert the mkv file as described here, it works, only for 1.28 min of the file, i dont understand why it does not convert the whole file/movie??? help pls!!
thanx
I googled 'play mkv on ps3' and this came up. I had a 6.5gb BDRip 1080p x264 mkv with 2 audio channels. I honestly added this file and 10 minutes later it was done!! The english audio was chosen and the video looks awesome!! I copied it to my ps3 wirelessly and it works better than I thought it would.
Thanks for the guide, the latest version is a bit different now but I managed to get through it.
/Ice_
The software works a little different now, its easier. Used the slowest(i.e. Best Quality) encoding and no word of a lie - Rent Live on Broadway 1080p 10gb converted in 15 minutes - to 12gb, and streamed great to my PS3 - bit iffy at the amount of system resources on my PC for TVersity - but I am copying it to my 320gb HDD on my PS3 now. Looks like it'll take about 20-30 mins to transfer wirelessly.
All I can say is thanks!!
Works very fine! Thanks a lot!
/Regards from Sweden
You can play MKV's pn PS3 directly if you have the correct codec. I use to convert all the time till I figured it out. Now I just download whatever MKV I want to watch, 720p or 1080p..hehe
Here is all I did...
PS3 Media Server
CCCP
Windows 7
Shark007
It worked just fine... Make sure you update to the latest PS3 firmware
Converting mkv to vob is easy with mkv2vob but you must split files to 4gb (which is done automatically if you check a box) and transfer them on a FAT32 HDD or USB Flash drive for them to work on PS3.
This is only way to do it so far.
PS3 will not read NTFS drives.
FAT32 will only wrtie 4GB files.
This is the problem (not a big one though) using PS3
or you could use gotsent which does everything in one go and is very easy to use
This was great information. I would constantly waste time downloading programs that never convert the file right. Either it was that the Playstation didn't recognize the new file, or it was too large. Thanks for the info, though.
This worked for me once. I converted and watched it on my PS3 and it was great. I converted another file and it froze at about 2 minuets on the PS3 (works fine on the PC). I deleted it and reconverted it now the PS3 wont even show up any of the vob files. The folder that contains them is empty according to the PS3. Why?
thanks lot dude. will try
Absolutely superb!!! I'd deffo recommend this (MKV2VOB). I used to use GotSent but gave up after it kept failing to convert all of the audio. I'd only find out that it had failed after watching it for 10 mins......grrrrr.
This works straight out of the tin and is a million times faster than anything I've used before. One word of warning though, make sure you uncheck "delete file after conversion"...I just lost a 12gig Empire Strikes Back!!
convert it using format factory its free
" While this is not wrong, it's also not true, you can play MKV files on your PS3"
actually, it *IS* true, because you're not playing the MKV file. You're playing a file converted to another format.
thnx
Griffo:
This is one of the best fixes I have seen. This worked great. awsome post!!!
Worked for me!
Thank you.
Anyone had an issue where they have converted a .MKV file using mkv2vob and the when loading the file through the PS3 it tells me that the Total Running Time of the movie is 10:00'00"
instead of reading the actual run length. The file plays fine a/v is good. I have trouble using the 'square' button on the PS3 to skip ahead during the movie. OTher then that everything works fine...
This doesn't happen with ALL my MKV files only a few...
Can anyone help?
And i don't know the program to obtain all the .MKV file info to post here.
Thanks for any help

He!
My mkv2vob 2.4.6 does not mux anything. It only does DTS to AC3. It only has muxed one single file correct. The others are all only 39mb and lasts 43sec. I try to mux the mkv to vobs, so that the maximun size is 4GB.
Could anyone help me?
I have used mkv2vob with some with success but not with others like converting the matrix trilogy 1080p and using the fat32 file splitter x264 high bit rate slow. Matrix 2 & 3 converted fine but matrix 1 like the others has like seven 4gb files. 6 work but part 3 of 6 has no video only audio. This also happened when converting 300 (2006) 1080p. 6 of the 7 were fine but one just wont work. Any explanations??? This is really frustrating b/c it takes like 4 hrs. of transcoding and muxing each one with failure.
Hi,

Sweet!!! Ima give this a try today, I got a few MKV movie files that I have to convert...will stream them via TVersity-PS3. Thanks!
Thanks dude, will try this with 2 months 2 million!
Thank dude, worked really well, took less than 2 minutes to convert a tv show, now watching flashforward in HD on my PS3.
Seems like a big hassle.. does it take a few seconds or one hour ?
This is a wonderful guide and I have used the method several times and it worked great. I have all my movie disks stored on a 1TB NAS with a media server running and stream it to the PS3 from there. Problem now, all of a sudden the PS3 is not seeing any of the .mkv videos. I've tried re-scanning the database and they are showing in the list, but are not showing up on the PS3 when I browse the media folders.
In response to how long it takes, that all depends on your system. A high-end system with a good graphics processor can do a 8-gig blu-ray quality file in a few hours. On an average system you may want to let it run overnight. However a lot of it depends on what codec you are using, how much compression there is, size and quality of the source file, what the output method is, ect. I've done some in a few minutes, and I've had a couple take a full day. But the longer ones were over two hours in length and in full blu-ray quality.
Just used the latest version to convert the latest Transformers film, worked a treat on the PS3 - thanks for the tip-off!
I come up with this error
'the temp folder cannot be located on a FAT32 formatted drive. mkv2vob needs to be able to write files larger than 4gb to the temp folder'
what do i do - I have about 10gb free disk space.
Thanks man! This works perfectly! Finally I can watch HD quality Heroes on my PS3 :D
I've also found that you can use PlayOn to copy MKVs over to the PS3 (or just play them from your pc), using the My Media feature. It's a beautiful thing! ^_^
I need help!
I have a 9GB 1080p MKV file and i want to play it on my ps3, but when i click browse and then select the file it doesn't appear in the "source file" box and i cant convert it and i dont know why its not working. I'm not sure if it matters but i already successfully converted a episode of Dexter but it was only 1.2GB and 720p.
I also want to put it on a flash drive and not watch it over a network.
What should i do?
I probably sound really stupid here, but I got the conversion working perfect, but unfortunatley the orginal movie is 1 hr and 20 mins , but when I did this process the m-peg movie is only 56 minutes, do you know what I am doing wrong?
Cheers
i think it will take take a few seconds or may be i mistake?
Any way to transfer it via jumpdrive w/o formatting to ntfs? It won't let me, i'm stuck in fat32 and my external 1tb won't show up in ps3 menu. hmm..
Thank you very much...
Thank you very much...
How come i only get an 'add' option rather than 'save'?

how long dose it take ?
This worked great for me. I was able to convert mkv to mpg quickly. Does anyone know how much visual and sound quality I lose by going to mpg instead of x264 with mkv2vob? My conversions only take about 10 minutes. They look great on my 55".
TIA!

Thanks - worked like a charm.
Hey, you still cant play MKV files, what your doing is converting it into another format.
Just to correct you.

Hey guys I am new here so hello all I got some great info on this but I would like to say i have no prob converting or playing all movies, but my prob is my new ps3 will not read ntfs files it has to be fat32 and that only allows up to 4gig. Am i missing something here it would sure save time not having to splitt files? thx for any reply

Works a treat, thanks for the info.
Only one question, Is there any way to send this to the ps3 over a wireless network to play off the hard disc.
