Introduction:
If you are having problems on "How To Potty Train Your Puppy" then here are some simple steps to follow to potty train your puppy. There are two basic methods for potty training a pup. One is paper training and the other is crate training. The method that we will use is paper training. What is Paper training? Paper training is the form of house training were you instruct the puppy to release her pee and poop on a paper product. The best material for paper training is newspaper, because of the cheap cost and it is readily available.
What is the difference between paper training and crate training? Crate training is where you train your dog to go outside. Most vets and dog trainers believe this is a faster method to house training your puppy. However, it requires a considerable amount of time and effort, which a lot of people can't afford.
Decide on which method is best for you. Only choose one method from the beginning as switching from one method to another will confuse your puppy and prolong the training.
Paper Training Method is for you if:
1. You live in an apartment that does not have readily access to a yard.
2. If you can't spend large amounts of time supervising the puppy that crate training requires
3. You plan to train your puppy to go outside but not just yet due to weather conditions (like for feet of snow).
Crate Training Method is for you if:
1. Your puppy will grow into a medium to big dog.
2. You have more time with the puppy to let her out of the crate at a two - three hour interval.
3. You want your dog to go outside the house from the start.
The paper training method is not suitable for all dogs. It really only works for small male to small - medium sized females as the mess can be easily scooped up. A larger dog will produce a larger mess that will be too much for the newspaper and you to handle.
Instructions:
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things you will need
- NewsPaper
- A location in which the puppy will use. Preferably somewhere without a carpet. Most people choose a corner of the kitchen or laundry room.
- A barrier. Like a kids gate.
Step One
Spread large amounts of newspaper in the tiled area. You want to make it thick so that it absorbs the pee. We want the area to be large for the puppy to get used to the idea of releasing on paper. Most dogs take a couple of months (eight to twelve weeks to get used to the paper training method. You want to confine your puppy to the papered area unless she's sleeping, eating, or being played with while actively supervised. At nights you want the puppy to sleep in her kennel as they will not go potty in their bed area.
Step Two
Praise your puppy when you see her eliminating on the paper. Wait till she has finished so as not to distract her. Praise her, pet her, and give her a treat. If you find that she has eliminated off the paper after the fact. Do not attempt to tell her off, as your puppy will not understand what she did wrong. The only thing you can do is clean it up and supervise more carefully.
If you catch your puppy in the act. This is a great opportunity for training development. Interrupt your puppy with a large clap, with a loud verbalization like ("Ah-ahhh!"), or slap your open palm loudly on the wall. The sounds will startle her and in most cases will cause the puppy to stop mid-toilet in a hunch. Scoop her up immediately and place her on the paper. Give her praises when she has finished.
Step Three
Feed her on a specific time schedule (for example a meal at 8 PM, 1 PM, and 7pm) and not at will. This will encourage your puppy to develop an "elimination timetable". Offering food or water after 8 PM is not recommended, unless you stay up late and sleep during the day on your own schedule.
