How To Prepare For Art School
63
What should I do to prepare!?!?!
Calm down, calm down.
Lets all just take a deep breath for a moment and think this through. How can we prepare for art school? Its really simple! Once you choose the art school that you wish to attend for the next few years. Hopefully you went on one of those long tours. Because believe me, its worth it. Also, make sure to listen to the students attending during the time that you are on this tour. They might actually tell you that the art school you want to go to isn't worth it and that the school is just giving you the rose-tinted glasses view.
Here's a few things for you to do, and this is both for those who are going to comute or live in the dorms. For first day of classes, MAKE SURE, to come EARLY! You don't know whats going to happen on the first day, so its best to set your clocks a bit earlier.
Also, no matter what, bring with you some folders, each labeled on what classes you are attending. Because the instructors are going to be giving you a syllabus on what you will be learning. Make sure you have a highlighter, because usually they will tell you. "Textbook Needed For Class," so highlight that part. Have I forgot to mention to also bring a thick notebook and a pen or pencil. (You should bring an extra just incase you lose the first one.)
Also on the day before your classes you may be given a starter kit (A bag of supplies that are directed around on what your majoring) from the school, so expect a heavy load. You might want to have a friend come with you.
Another thing to understand is, that even if its a Art school. They will not go easy on you and some of the instructors may be a little cut-throat to you. But don't hold that against them, they are just doing what they believe will help you face the real world. (Unless you pissed them off on the first day. First Impressions are the key!)
You will also be loaded down with a lot of homework so its best to write out on what time or day you will usually do your work. You will have tests and projects and then Finals. Which are truly a pain in the butt when you decide to do them in the last minute. Believe me when I say this, that the teachers can truly tell if its last minute or not. Especially if the glue hasn't completely dried yet on your presentation.
Other helpful tips, is that you need to know how to use a Flash Drive. You should also have one at your disposal!! 1 GB or even 2 GB will be more then enough!! You need to also know how to work a Mac computer as well as some of the applications. Like Photoshop, Illustrator and Power Point Presentation. For those who are interested in Animation or Visual Effects, you need to have at least a good grasp on After Effects and maybe at least the basics on Maya, depending on what your interested in.
Another thing to look out for, is that on your sheet of what classes you need to take for your next quarter. Your going to notice that you will be taking General Education classes. Make sure to take the classes that wil help you with your major. So if your major is Animation. I really and highly doubt that Music 101 is going to help you. You should take something else.
The last thing I will say this, for general education classes. It wil be quick and painless if you get your Math and English as well as History as soon as possible.
I hope that this will prepare you, and if you have any questions or would like for me to go further into this, let me know. I'll be more then happy to help assist you.
