Before I used to dump used CDs and DVDs in trash, but that is not the right way of disposing it.

The CDs and DVDs contain polycarbonate plastic (made from crude oil), lacquers, aluminum and tiny amounts of gold. These don't break easily; they remain in landfills for years and years and sometimes seep into our drinking water. And if you try to dispose them by burning CDs and DVDs it releases toxic fumes, no one wants that either.

Luckily for us, there are number of recycling centers across the nation, which accepts mailing CDs and DVDs to them for free.

If you have data disks to dispose off, cut them off into pieces before mailing them out to recycling centers. They don't mind even if the CDs or DVDs are not operable.

In the U.S. you can ship them to the following addresses:

Before you mail them, separate the disks from the trays or cases and inserts and ship them separately. Some recycling centers accept all of them, but it is better to contact them first, but you can ship CDs and DVDs alone.

1.) CD Recycling Center
68H Stiles Rd.
Salem, NH 03079

2.) Back Thru The Future
150 Main Street
Ogdensburg, NJ 07439.

Write "FREE CD/DVD RECYCLING " on the outside of your shipping package. E-mail questions to RECYCLE@BackThruTheFuture.com or call 973-823-9752 and ask for Free CD Recycling

Thanks Jenny, that is awesome you are shipping them to recycle centers. In some places they have local recycle centers for CDs and DVDs. I am collecting them, once I have enough I am going to ship them. Thanks.

A very useful hub, thanks for the info! I live in New Jersey, but never heard of Ogdensburg. Nice to have a place in my own backyard though.

Thanks Jen. There are so many things we throw in trash without realizing the consequences. Hope we all do the right thing.

Thanks for this informative article. One recycling facility center here in the Philippines recycles cds and dvds into wall decors.

Quicksand, I wish :)

BeatsMe, they separate the parts and try to use whatever they can reuse it. They do similar things with monitors and computers.

Thanks Jill, glad to see they are doing in Philippines. Here also they do it but sometimes ship them to China for recycling add more to the environmental costs.
