Save Money! Recycle Your T-shirt into Underpants
70Need New Underpants?
Got some old t-shirts in your dresser drawer that have slogans or pictures on them that are so old-school that you wouldn't even wear them to wash the car or take out the garbage, for fear of being spotted by the giggling onlookers?
If you are into recycling big-time, and who isn't these days?...you will want to know how to recycle everything you can,and that includes--yes your undies. Why not? They can be reused and re-deployed for 'action' and you can save money by doing it and make some very unique panties in the process.
You can use those old t-shirts and give them a second life by recycling the t-shirt into a pair of underpants!
Designer Underpants
You are the designer sew your new underpants will be unique! (pun intended)
Whatever you choose to use for your pants will be saying something about you, or not, depending on who you expect will be seeing your underpants. It does offer an oppurtunity for creativity and self-expression and have fun wearing them when they are finished.
And by the way, they are practically free!
Measure
Measure your hips. Do this at the point, (yes gals, I know it can be scary)where your hips are widest.
Now divide that number by two, and then, painful as it may be, add another inch. This measurement is the width at about half way down from the top of the pants. If you draw the pattern from your measurements, you will be able to make more underpants easily, once you have the right pattern that works for you. This will save time in the future.
Pick a T-shirt
What would look nice on your bottom?
Kitties?
Slogans?
Whatever you choose it will be plastered across your bum and your other lower parts so pick something sexy or simple, and make sure it's large enough to make a pair of panties from--this will of course vary depending on the size of gal who's bottom you are covering.
The crotch can be a second t-shirt, or if your shirt is big enough, you can find enough material there for the entire pants.
Sew
Now take the crotch piece, and sew the broad end; the edge can be folded a few times if you like. Now arrange the back and front pieces, and put on a table surface bum-side up.
Consult diagram below to put the crotch piece wrong-side up on the bum, make sure you mirror the front piece on the opposite side. Now, using straight pins, join the three layers together with your pins, at the crotch, and then pin the sides as well. The sides can now be double-stitched. As for the crotch, you should sew all three of the layers together all along the lower edge, and remember to leave approx. 1/3 inch for seam allowance. Next, fold the crotch part around to the front, lining it up with the front section and then use your straight pins to pin it in place. You want to make sure the bottom inside seam is well covered. At this point you will have something that should look like real underwear, with a crotch piece folded around and lined up with the front part. How Do they fit?
Side seams are the key here.
Do the panties fit tight around the waist or is there too much give?
Do your legs slide easily through the holes or do you have to pull them on with a tug?
If anything is uncomfortable you can still re-sew seams at this point before things are set in stone.
Edges
Using a zigzag stitch sew around the leg holes along the waist, but without folding any of the edges over. Now stitch along the crotch piece as you would sew the front piece. The opening at the top of the crotch should not be a problem as the sides will hold it down.
Now fold the edges over about one-third inch, right side outward, and zigzag stitch around all three holes once more.
Repeat once more. You need to fold over sufficient material for a sleeve for running your elastic through. In addition, leave about three-quarters of an inch of the leg holes not sewn at the hips and also a bit unsewn at the back of the waist. At this point you now you have a slender sleeve of material around all the holes and also an opening in each sleeve for feeding through the elastic.Don't forget the Elastic
Take your elastic cord and divide with scissors into three parts-- one piece will go around each leg hole and the third for the waist. Remember to leave some extra at each end. Now feed through the sleeves, leaving some protruding at either end. Here you should put on the panties, tighten the elastic, and then safety pin the elastic at the point where it should be stitched.
Now the elastic ends should be sewn together, remove the remainder, and sew together any unsewn seams.
From T-shirt to Panties
You will find each pair of underpants you make by this method will get easier and easier to do. They will vary widely in how they feel and fit, according to the material of the t-shirt you use in making your underpants, but that might be a good thing--after all--variety is the spice of life--even in you pants!
And by the way, if you want all this done for you, just send your t-shirt to Solo Jones--she will do it for you for a small charge.
Recycling is the way to go and you should try and reuse everything you can think of--so recycle your underpants girls!

Great hub, especially for the recyclers. Unfortunately most people don't seem to have time these days for sewing anymore.
