How To Remember Your Dreams
63
If you are interested in studying your dreams, the first thing you need to get a grip on is being able to remember them! Not to worry, it's actually incredibly easy to remember your dreams once you get in the habit of doing so. I find I'm often able to write hundreds of words down night after night, capturing many details of my dreams, now that I've been doing so for so long.
Write Down Your Dreams
1. Establish a habit of writing your dreams down as soon as you wake up.
This is critical, and more important than anything else when it comes to remembering your dreams. This habit builds upon itself. It gets easier and easier to remember your dreams, and over time, more and more details will regularly emerge when you regularly write your dreams down. Try keeping a pen and paper by your bed, or leaving a laptop or desktop PC on with a notepad file fired up and ready to go. The idea is to not put anything in between yourself and writing the dreams down as soon as you wake up. For instance, don't take a shower and then write down your dreams. Do it first thing!
Avoiding Drugs & Alcohol
2. Go light on alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.
Using alcohol and other drugs can have a negative effect on remember your dreams. If you do drink alcohol or smoke marijuana regularly, you will find that not using these substances will often result in having more dreams. This is what's called an REM rebound. So the good news is that if you do drink and smoke and can't remember your dreams, give it up for a day or two and you are very likely to not just remember your dreams, but have dreams that are quite intense and memorable.
Use Dreaming Aids - But Cautiously
3. Consider trying a few dream aids.
If you've tried steps 1 and 2 and are still having a hard time remembering your dreams, consider the use of what's known as dream aids or dream potentiators. These varied substances are anything that are reputed to have effects on the dream in the sense of making them more vivid, intense, colorful, or overall, just more plain "real".
This includes B6, which is said to give you very crazy dreams, which includes all the aforementioned descriptions of vividness, intensity, color, and realness. Also of interest is Calea Zacatechichi, widely reported to effect ones dreams and even helpful in inducing lucid dreams. Because of this, calea zacatechichi is one of the most popular dreaming herbs there is.
There are other substances as well you could research if you are so inclined, including mugwort, choline, galantamine, and african dream root.
Keeping a Dream Journal
Keep in mind that dream aids are no substitute for the best way to remember your dreams: wake up and try to write down any details you can remember from the dream, immediately, and do this day after day after day. This is what's called a dream journal, and it's the key to remember your dreams!
If you are reading this and thinking it just won't work for you - test it out for yourself and see what happens. It's very rare that you cannot train your mind to recover details from dream by slowly keeping a dream journal of any details you do remember, which eventually turns into the ability to recall your dreams in far greater detail!
