How To Repair Burn Marks On Wood Furniture
72It is unfortunate but it happens. Someone has dropped a candle or a cigarette or perhaps put a very hot serving dish on wood furniture. Here are some tips to repair burn marks on wood furniture. These tips are for solid wood furniture not particleboard. Damage to particleboard is usually permanent.
- First, gather the materials needed to make the repair. They will include a "000" very fine steel wool pad, wood filler, wood furniture repair markers, wax and polish.
- Gently rub the area with the steel wool pad. Rub very lightly and only remove the part of the surface with the burn marks. Be careful to not go any deeper.
- After the burn marks are removed, fill the area with wood filler. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the can for the proper application.
- Allow the wood filler to dry. If necessary, use the "000" steel wool pad to smooth any rough spots.
- Choose a furniture repair marker that will match your piece of furniture. Carefully apply the marker until the area is completely blended with the surrounding wood.
- Apply a coat of wax by hand. Then polish. The resulting sheen will help to make the repair less noticeable.
Please note that if the wood is deeply gouged or the burn marks are more intense that a minor repair, then the piece of furniture will need to be completely stripped and professionally sanded. It will need to be done by someone who can sand evenly and smoothly.
