In my previous article on hard water problems, I mentioned that water is considered soft and safe if it has 0 to 3.5 GPG (grain per gallon). Water with GPG above 3.5 is not soft. In most places where water is too hard, the local utility company tries to take care of this hard water problem by bringing mineral content to a moderate range of around 5 to 6 GPG. But this is still not soft enough for home use. For use in home, this water has to be softened further using water softeners, water treatment or other water softening methods.

Conditioning water that tests lower than 3 GPG has several benefits. You can save both money and time on laundry and dishwashing costs by using less detergent, shorter cycles, and cooler wash water. But this is a kind of luxury that most people don’t enjoy.

Solving Hard Water Problem

Using a packaged water conditioner before each wash and rinse cycle is another good and very useful solution for softening wash water. Packaged water conditioner products trap hardness minerals during the wash. If you use an automatic washer, you should use a “non-precipitating” type of water conditioner because it flushes away the hard minerals rather than suspending them in the washing solution.

If you are looking for a solution to hard water problems for the whole house, you can go for a whole house water softener. Installing a water softener can solve most of your problems. First and foremost, you get soft water that can minimize deposits in pipes and appliances and hence save you money of repair. You can save both money and time on laundry and dishwashing costs by using less detergent, shorter cycles, and cooler wash water. It gets rid of bathtub rings and spots on dishes. In bathroom, it reduces the amount of soap, shampoo, and detergent you use. This will not only make your skin soft and your hair shiny but will prevent ant skin problem.
