58Finding yourself depressed can happen at any time of the year but for some of us holidays are the worst times. Feelings of sadness can happen to all of us at some time and how we can identify these symptoms of depression, know what to do about them and stop depression is the goal of this short article. We should not ignore this feeling of sadness. It is universal and an ingrained part of our world. It has been seen throughout history and is a significant part of our music and movies. If the down in the dumps feeling is overwhelming, then the best thing to do is consult professional help. Still, there are various ways to help yourself feel better and we suggest a few in this article.
1. The old saying 'Laughter is the best medicine' may be
trite but it is also true. It is remarkable how, if you are suffering
from depression, the release of stress by laughing, does make you feel
much better.
2. Listening to music can really help to lift
your mood. If you just let go and let your favorite music drift over
you will relax and begin to feel much happier. We all respond to music.
You may get the feeling that you wish to dance to the music and that's
fine - even on your own! Simply start to move to the music and let all
your disappear as your move.
3. Do something active. The idea
is to get up and do something that moves your body! Maybe playing with
the kids in the driveway, or riding your bike around the neighborhood
and saying Hi to the local kids. Lots of people find that the natural
world can help to lift depression. Observing a stunning sunset or
looking at the ocean can be a great pick me up.
4. Try to help
someone who is less fortunate than you are. One way is to volunteer at
a local hospital or institution which can also help you realise how
well-off you actually are. Simply counting your blessings can help.
5. Doing something that is productive can always cheer you up. Think in a positive way about about life's riches and try not to think too
much about your problems. Borrow a dog if you don't have one and take
pleasure in the animal's love of life. At times simple undemanding love
may be enough to overcome the feelings of sadness.
6. Spoil
yourself! We are all aware that eating our favorite food can help. When
I am sad chocolate gives me a little boost. Yes it is short-lived but
it can help. Or luxuriate in a massage or manicure. Feel looked after
and special!
Naturally, all these suggestions might not be
appropriate to everyone. However try some of them out and they may
help. keep these suggestions in mind and if you begin to experience
sadness, try to find the best way to to cheer you up again. Depression
has a habit of creeping in unnoticed so you should to take action to
stop it before it overwhelms you.
