How To Stop Snoring Naturally

Snoring is a very common problem, and there are many different solutions to prevent and cure snoring including surgery as a last resort. However you can stop snoring naturally by making a few simple lifestyle changes.

Snoring can cause disruption to your sleep and health not only for yourself but also your partner and other members of your household. If left untreated it can affect your work life with higher chances of you falling asleep at important meetings, or making errors of judgement.

It could also lead to problems in your personal life and in extreme cases could result in partners splitting up or sleeping in separate rooms.

One very simple trick to help you to stop snoring naturally is to try sleeping on your side and propping yourself in position with the use of a large pillow wedged against your back. This will stop you from rolling over onto your back during sleep and prevent you from snoring.

Stop Snoring Naturally - Could an Allergy Cause You To Snore?

If this fails to work then there could be a chance that you are suffering from an allergy or sinus problems. Do you wake up with a blocked nose? Try checking under the bed for dust. It's all to easy when vacuuming a bedroom to forget about under the bed.

Dust can pile up and then you breathe it in while asleep. If you have a sensitivity to house dust this could cause asthma or swollen nasal passages which become blocked. This causes snoring as oxygen  has to pass through very narrowed passages, and when tissue in the throat relaxes and drops down it vibrates creating a snoring noise. Narrowed air passages contribute to this problem making the snoring sound even louder.

If you have a cold or allergy try inhaling steam with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. This is a great way to stop snoring naturally as it clears the nasal passages keeping them open. Adding a few drops to your bath is also a good idea.

Try keeping your head raised while sleeping and avoid taking certain medications such as antihistamines before going to bed. Stop snoring naturally by investing in a humidifier. Often with central heating or air conditioning the air inside your home can become very dry. This could result in congested nasal passages and a dry throat. A humidifier will ensure that the air remains moist at all times.

Did You Know That Your Diet Could Be Making You Snore?

Some people have a sensitivity to dairy products and this can produce an excess of mucus which blocks the airways. If you suspect that you have this problem avoid foods such as cheese, yogurt or milky drinks a few hours before you go to bed. You will have a more comfortable night's sleep and your snoring problem will have stopped.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol in the evening as this causes the muscles in the throat to relax and flop back down resulting in a loud snoring noise. The odd glass or wine shouldn't cause problems but cut back if you drink a lot more.

If you are overweight this could be the cause of your snoring problem. Piling on the pounds creates denser tissue in the neck and throat which knock against each other as they flop back down during sleep. Stop snoring naturally by losing weight.

Change your diet from high fat processed foods to a diet based on high fibre foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans and pulses. These foods are full of essential nutrients and keep you feeling full as well as eliminating toxins from your body. You will find that by losing weight your snoring will gradually lessen and you will feel healthier and more energetic.

Stop Snoring Exercises

Keep yourself fit and healthy with exercise and diet and this will greatly reduce your chances of developing a snoring problem. Fit and toned muscles in the throat will be less likely to move about during sleep.

One very effective exercise to stop snoring naturally is singing as it's great for toning the muscles in the throat and you never know you may discover that you have hidden talents!

There are also exercises you can do to strengthen the jaw, tongue and soft palate. These can be done anywhere and you could make them a daily routine just like brushing your teeth.

Stress and anxiety could be another cause of snoring. Try relaxation exercises such as yoga or Tai Chi. Take up a sport such as tennis or running to strengthen your heart and lungs. Any exercise is good for you even a quick 10 minute walk across the park is good.

How Snoring Can Affect Your Health

If left snoring could result in some very serious health problems. The onset of diabetes could be triggered by snoring as it reduces the amount of oxygen taken in causing insulin resistance.

You are also much more at risk from high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease. There is also a much more dangerous form of snoring called sleep apnea which could prove fatal. It causes the sufferer to stop breathing for up to a minute several times a night.

It's always preferable to stop your snoring symptoms naturally but in some cases it may be necessary to consider surgery

Surgery For Snoring

Occasionally natural methods for snoring don't work and this is due to a physical reason. For instance tissue from enlarged tonsils or adenoids could partly block the airways during sleep. Reducing the amount of tissue surgically can have an immediate effect.

Another problem that can occur is a deviated septum in the nasal passage. Again surgery usually produces positive results and soon after your snoring will disappear.

Often really bad cases of snoring and sleep apnea can be cured by using a CPAP machine. This is a device that's plugged into the mains and has a mask attached to it that's worn over the face during sleep. This provides a continuous flow of oxygen into the airways keeping them open and preventing snoring.

The downside is that it's awkward to carry around if you are going away and it can be very uncomfortable to wear. It won't cure your snoring since as soon as you stop using it your snoring returns again.

Ideally you can stop snoring naturally using some of the tips mentioned in this article and reduce the need for surgery.

Why Drinking Water May Help You To Stop Snoring

How much water do you drink a day? Many people don't realise that they are very dehydrated until they start to feel thirsty. The ideal amount of water is about 8 glasses a day and more in the hot weather.

This will keep the cells functioning properly and that enough oxygen is getting to them. Your metabolism will work more efficiently and many minor health problems including snoring may clear up without any further action. Drinking water in itself can be a very effective way to stop snoring naturally.

Add a teaspoon of honey to a glass of warm water. This is a great remedy for colds and helps to clear the airways. Honey also has antibacterial qualities so is good for your general health.
