How To Stop Snoring

Snoring is a noise made while sleeping usually on the in breath. Although seen as a joking matter the reality is slightly different. If you have ever been in a room with a heavy snorer you'll know it's no laughing matter.

I remember when my brother-in-law Ted slept over after a family get together. I was upstairs in the master bedroom and he was downstairs in the spare room. We were seperated by maybe 20 feet and two closed doors. His snoring was so load you'd think a train was passing by. By the end of the night I was at screaming point and could have cheerfully killed him in his sleep! That was after just one night, God knows how his long suffering wife put up with it, I was just glad when he left.

Snoring can also effect the snorer, often causing them to have a restless and disturbed nights sleep leaving then tired and listless the following day. Their have even been reported cases of people divorcing because a snoring problem gets so bad.

Some of the causes of snoring are listed below:

  • Sleep Apnea (while you sleep you stop breathing for a short period of time) This is a serious health condition and the first thing a snorer should do before trying any self medication is see his health professional to get Sleep Apnea elinated as the cause of your snoring.
  • Being Overweight can cause your throat to be narrower
  • Genetics - you may have inherited a narrow throat
  • If you are middle aged you are more likely to snore
  • Men snore more than women
  • Being unfit and out of condition (bad muscle tone)
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol causes muscle relaxation which can make snoring worse :(
  • Having a cold or congested chest
  • Lying on your back when sleeping can cause the back of your throat to relax
  • Using to many pillows can move your neck out of line making snoring more likely (it's also very bad for your posture)

What you we do about it?

So how do we address the snoring problem? Firstly go and see your health professional and elimiate any serrious cause of your snoring (Sleep Apnea). Their are two main alternatives to dealing with the snoring issues one you may not have considered before.

Option One

If the snoring is effecting your relationship with your partner consider getting them some treatment! What I hear your partner cry why should I get treatment it's your damn problem! True but the person it most badly effects is the long suffering partner.

I would recommend Hypnosis. Now before you run away screaming hear me out. If you go and see a certified Hypnotherapist they will be able to give you suggestions that enable you to just not hear the noise. In fact they can suggest that the snoring guides you deeper into relaxation and sleep! This option works very well but can be expensive and does not solve the snorers problem.

Option 2

Assuming their is no serious cause to the snoring you can try one of the many self help methods that are around. These range from surgery, strips to put on your nose, laser treatment, diet, pills and many more. Be careful though and do your own research as a lot of products on the market are just plain rubbish!
