How To Survive Prison
80Are you facing a prison sentence? Scared? You should be!
This hub is to help you survive that prison sentence. If you are a "baby-raper" or a "snitch" too bad for you; I can't help you and probably wouldn't if I could.
As a Christian, the first thing I will tell you to help you is get on your knees and pray for grace and mercy through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. No matter how "bad" you are, God loves you and sent His Son to be crucified for you.
The rest of this hub will deal with the reality of getting through prison--I am not putting Christ on the back-burner, but I know many are not at that point in their lives yet.
I entered prison before I accepted Jesus, so I will explain how I survived in that atmosphere.
I will first give you my background.
Juvenile Delinquent
As a minor, I was terrible. I lived in many different places and was in and out of boy's homes, delinquent center's, and ranch's. Many used to call me Houdini because I would escape from every place they would put me in.
At one point in my life I lived in Denver, Colorado. The group I ran with would do everything. We stole vehicles, robbed people, and my specialty; burglaries. I was in Denver Juvenile Hall for a major burglary and a big Indian kid and myself actually escaped. It was unheard of as it was just like a county jail.
I was finally facing adult charges. They gave me one last shot at probation after they caught me again. I was on probation in Denver and had no one. Escape artist that I was, I decided to fly the coop again. Off to Nebraska!
Cornhusker State
Mom was living in Fremont(on map). I tamed down and moved in with her. I was turning 18 and knew I better slow my life down or I would go to prison.
I met a lovely girl and ended up getting married. I worked hard but I did smoke a little "pot". Life was good but our financial situation was terrible. My sweetie was pregnant and we were living with her Mom and Dad. I needed fast money so I bought 30 Lbs of marijuana and started selling. I was careful but not careful enough. One day a person I had been selling 1/4 Lb's to all the time called wanting 1 ounce. He was wearing a wire and 34 days later I got "busted".
They stuck it to me. I wouldn't tell on anyone. The judge handed down a 3-6 year sentence for $40 worth of weed.
The Lessons
I have several suggestions to get you through it. I got through it and learned a lot.
In these lesson's please understand that prison is it's own place. You cannot survive there the same way you do out here.
First and foremost,You must not care if you live or die! If you are white, only stay around the whites. If you are black, only blacks and so forth.
No matter a man's color, don't trust them!
I found that the administration want's to think they rehabilitated you. Your first few months should show the hardest side of you. I myself, would fight at any moment. I sold drugs and smoked "pot" in prison. Pick a "bigshot" and fight them. I chose a guy they called "crazy" because he had killed another inmate for smiling. Hit him with a ten lb weight and killed him dead. I got my ass kicked, but I gained much respect!
After you have shown that "bad" side, start attending all the self-help groups you possibly can; A.A., drug courses, prison fellowship all are part of that. If you can, sign up for school courses. When you go to the parole board, they will see how you were terrible and then suddenly rehabilitated. Can you say early release? Your odds will be good!
I suggest to not gamble in prison, you WILL lose.
Make sure and show respect to cell-mates. Don't fart and only take a crap when they are out of the cell.
It will be scary, but you cannot show that fear.
Last, but not least, if the group you run with asks you to do something, I suggest you do it--You will be alone and a sitting duck if you don't.
Your Job
When in prison most inmates are given jobs to do. Aim for a powerful job! I worked for the chemical dependency program towards the end of my release. You can use your position to gain other favors.
Always remember that there are way more convicts than guards. In all actuality the inmates do control the prison.
It has been years since I was in and I am getting prepared to file for a pardon, but prison life will never change. Remember, as I said at the start of this hub, Jesus is the way to get away from that lifestyle.
Follow these simple rules and they may help your stay in the "bighouse".
Most experts say that about 70% of inmates return to prison--Don't be one of them, when you do get out, do it right! Get help if you need it.
I made it through it, all intact! Yes, rapes do occur, but usually to those that ask for it and are "pretty". I fought! No one would take my virginity--It'll stay that way until the day I die.
I got through it; You can too!!

Whoa.. It's cool that u can shar. Bless you my brother:)
With the prison society we now live in - America is the prison capital of the world - this is excellent and timely information. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge on this important subject.
Hi Froggy,
I can relate to many of your story. and have spent over 10 years in 16 different prisons! When people would ask me what i was in for i used to always reply "the same thing as you", they would say "what! Robbery" and i would say "no getting caught"! lol
Here in the UK prisons are not as tough as the American establishments!
As for the powwerful jobs, , if it was winter i would tell them i was a chef and get a job in the warn kitchens and if it was summer i would tell them i was a qualified Gardener, which is true as i learned this skill in another prison! This way i would get a cushy job outside!
I, like your self have learned lessons and am now a respectful, honest citizen!
Wow compu-smart,I never would have guessed that you had been in. I am happy you got it together too. Keep up the hubbin friend.
Thanks to you too survival topics!
I just want to add that i was in for drug offences like you as well as fraud, shop lifting etc...I know i did bad, but in the eyes of the police, i was a "respectable" criminal compared to other criminals crimes!
:)
A friend of mine had to go to prison on a technicality. That changed his life. He is still battling everything he went through in there.
Glad you survived.
while entertaining and maybe a little dose of thruthfulness - this post is screaming BS. First off - don't ever think that the first thing you do is to take on the biggest guy - even if you do hit him, all of his friends will stomp you. As well, if you do happen to "kill" an inmate with a 10lb weight - you would be writing this post on paper to have someone on the outside transcribe it here. Sorry - some of it sounds familiar, but I have never known anyone to claim they murdered someone - that felony never goes away...
Dude, can you read---I did not say I hit him with a weight--he had killed a guy in there a few years earlier--As for the BS part--I showed that I was there--were you?? Have you been?
I just love how people that have never "been there" know so,so much on how to do it.
I kind of think you're the one full of the B.S.
Oh and by the way--if one set of "friends" jump, the other set of "friends" jump--and you have what is known as a gang war--Know there are a few guy's that just hide in their cells for their whole time--They are usually the one's that lose their minds.
thanks for sharing your story...
Scary stuff, interesting hub to say the least.
hi froggy...thanks for the sharing!
yeah..prison life is shito!
and its JESUS really who makes the change..
i was there for a month but it was enough to drive anybody kookoo..
BUT the name of the LORD kept me sane..
on the day i was release i could hear the song playing in my heart.
'and the trees of the fields will clap their hands when you go out with JOY!
The three strikes law has put thousands of people in prison for life, many who have been caught dealing pot or minor infractions. They're in jail w/ murders, rapists, pedophiles, and they're basically good kids who made bad choices. The system is completely broke. I'm glad you survived and can share your experiences with others.
im not bad i can honestly say that. i do and have made mistakes, and fear i might do time. im not worried about holding my own, but am about having to proving myself. thank 4 knowledge
Spent over 15years behind the razor wire fences and cement walls of them hate factories, houses of pain known as prison, im looking to consult white collars for pay as nothing else is working for employment... any info on getting some help, I need plugs via some defense attorneys..
already have been inside of several high schools talking to troubled youth ofcourse thats a free service I do to try and give back..talking to kids about how its not a way of life to choose..

prison break is the worst example of prison I've ever seen
Good for you for surviving, and doing good with the rest of your life. I have never been to prison, and hope never to be. I think the prisons need to treat all inmates with respect.
Peace to all!
Back when I went to prison in 05, I used a guide that was helpful to me.. I think the link was http://www.survivejail.info
Good luck!
Good hub thanks for sharing!
Hi Froggy - great hub! I swear they should have a course in school on "what happens". Good to be home, good to be out - Take Care -

Thanks, I enjoyed this.
Here on the outside, it'll help to know what the apostrophe is used for:
(1) possession, as in "Big Carl's dime bag" and
(2) contraction, as in "It's confusing to your readers to throw those things in at random."
It's that simple, but there's one exception: its, when it's possessive, has no apostrophe, as in "everything in its place."
shit.. im gonna die..
