Hi Benson, thanks for this hub. I have had one for years now on my left wrist. It dissappeared a number of years ago and one day painfully ruptured. Two years later it returned, felt like a bee sting and it is now marble size. Bothersome at times, but I live with it. I used to know them as 'Bible Bumps', as that's what the old timers used to whack them with to rupture them with. Or they would slam a window shut on them. Ouch!

I won't have surgery on it unless I really need to. Been cut on enuff!

I don't know how many other hubbers know what your talking about so maybe edit the title and add 'Bible Bump'? That may bring in a few more readers.

Thanx

Hi Jasmine,

it doesn't sound right for a little girl to be having multiple joint swellings. consult a doctor please.

regards.

I have had three. One on my left wrist just before I started college-- surgically removed. One on my right wrist  just before I got married --surgically removed two weeks after the wedding. Another on my right (or maybe it was left) wrist when expecting my first child-- surgery was delayed because of my pregnancy, and it "went away" by itself.

Since all of these happened at times of my life when I was facing a new challenge, I always wondered if my own doubts or fears about being able to handle something new had anything to do with the condition.

I became almost convinced that the 'disability" had something to do with the mind-body connection brought by my lack of confidence.

I didn't know about the "Bible bumps" and that particular treatment-- but maybe there is a connection there, I may have needed more faith pounded into me. That was 40+ years ago and I haven't had a recurrence. Still have the scars.

Hello, I'm Gavin and this April, I realised a small swelling in my right wrist. I didn't notice it but I think it originated after playing basketball. I got scared and thought it was a wrist injury 'cause I play the guitar and have a friend who has faced similar experiences.

But after a week, the pain had disappeared. Then after doing some push-ups in May, the pain had started again. However, I didn't go to see a doctor and the pain went away. Just last week, I started to experience pain after playing guitar. All of this happened in my right wrist.

When consulting a doctor, he said I have got this ganglion cyst. It's a small swelling so I think I have got it. I thought I could ask someone any small remedy to ease the pain or remove this ganglion without any medical procedures. The doctor said that it's okay and I don't need surgery. But I don't want to lose my guitar skills 'cause it hurts everytime I play it.

Any way to ease the pain? Thanks!

Hi Holly Elliott,

you should go to your doctor. Reading a hub about ganglions doesn't replace a medical consultation.

regards,

What is a Ganglion and How to Treat it?

A ganglion is a collection (also called a cyst) of jelly-like fluid in a thinned out portion of synovium of a joint. This is a result of trauma or repeated minor injuries. It is often found on the back of wrists or the dorsum of ankles. It is at times painful or tender. It sometimes goes away spontaneously without treatment. But then it often comes back after a few weeks. This is related to the cyst rupturing from trauma and recurring as the leak gets sealed in time.

How do we treat this?

Ganglions are best left alone if they don't give rise to symptoms. If they are symptomatic. They are treated with aspiration or surgical removal. Aspiration, once popular years ago, carries a recurrence rate of over 90% (almost a certainty) and is not recommended these days. Some doctors combine aspiration with injection of steroid into the cyst with aspiration to reduce the recurrence rate. Nevertheless, the efficacy of this is far from proven. Surgical removal carries a recurrence rate of 20%. There is more recovery to do, in terms of joint stiffness to overcome after surgery. Besides, the patient must learn about the possibility of recurrence before they consent for surgery. Patients must realize that over 90% of ganglions are managed by non-treatment as they are more a bother than a threat to health.
