How To Winterize Your Vehicle
68Here are some quick and easy steps to get your vehicle ready for the cold months ahead. With just a little bit of time and money you can save yourself some major headaches and keep your car running in peak condition all winter long.
1) Make sure the Battery and charging system are in optimal condition. If the outside temperature is 32 degrees the battery in your vehicle will lose 1/3rd of its cranking capacity. Most Automotive shops and discount parts stores will test the system for free.
2) Check your Antifreeze and condition of the cooling system. The general rule for cooling system protection is 50% antifreeze and 50% water, this mixture is good for -34 degrees and raises the boiling point to 265 degrees. If the thermostat is not working correctly, the heater will not work.Flush or change Antifreeze every two years.Do not forget about the radiator cap.
3) If you drive in sub-zero temperatures you will want to reduce the oil weight in your vehicle to a multi-grade like 5w-30.When oil is cold it will thicken and make the vehicle hard to start.
4) Keep your gas tank 1/2 full if you live where temperatures are freezing and below freezing, there is less chance for moisture to form in the lines. There is also fuel additives you can buy to prevent moisture.
5) Tire pressure should be checked when the weather turns to the colder months, your tires lose pressure because of contraction..You should consider tire chains or special tires if snow an ice are a issue.
6) Check the Exhaust system for leaks, this is a big one.If the exhaust is leaking and you drive with the windows closed it can be very dangerous. You can end up with Carbon Monoxide poison or worst.
7) Allow your car a little more warm up time when temperatures are below freezing. You will find your vehicle will not strain to move or the transmission sluggish to shift.
8) Washer fluid is a must in freezing weather. Not only for keeping the windshield clean, but you can use it to melt the ice on the windshield. You can make your own washer fluid using isopropyl alcohol, mix with water,@ 75% alcohol and 25% water, works great.

Nice tips for the winter. I think most drivers just focus on making sure their heaters work correctly for winter. Good reminders to focus on other parts of your car.
